@max0r yes that’s what I meant. Ah I see what you mean, I haven’t tried the N64 emu with that setting only SNES and NES which use retroarch. As I understand it mupen64 uses its own auto config so probably ignores the retroarch settings. May be worth you starting a new thread as may get lost in this one.
I’ve been having problems getting a lot of n64 games working on the mupen64plus that installs with the SD card image. Browsing around the forums it seemed that the mupen64plus-testing version might be a good way to go so I updated the setup script and then installed mupen64plus-testing. I know have a number of roms located in /home/pi/RetroPie/roms/n64-mupen64plus however the n64 emulator does not show up on the dashboard anymore since I updated to the testing version. Is there something I’m missing on how to get the testing version working and showing up on the dashboard?

This works for all emulators running with retroarch. But when pressing ‘x’ at n64 rom startup and selecting ‘mupen64plus-gles2n64’ it doesn’t start with retroarch. Does it work anyway? Simply adding your lines to ‘/opt/retropie/configs/n64/retroarch.cfg’ doesn’t work for ‘mupen64plus-gles2n64’.
I did a new binary install of mupen64plus with the RetroPie-Setup-Script and now I can change the default emulator with pressing ‘x’ at rom startup. Mario Kart indeed works very good with ‘mupen64plus-gles2n64’. But some other roms like Bomberman 64 or Zelda – OoT won’t start with gles2n64. They start with ‘lr-mupen64plus’ but with similar texture glitches as in Mario Kart.
With ‘mupen64plus-gles2rice’ all roms I tried start and run good and fast. But now the screen size is only about 1/4 and in the bottom left corner. Changing the output resolution with ‘x’ at rom startup doesn’t change anything.
Solutions for me:
1. All roms would start with ‘mupen64plus-gles2n64’
2. Using the full screen with ‘mupen64plus-gles2rice’
Other question: Using ‘lr-mupen64plus’ I can quit the emulator with pressing ‘Start’+’Select’ on my PS3 controller. All other emulators can only be closed with pressing ‘esc’. I would like to use my RetroPie station without a keyboard, so, is there a possibility to quit any emulator only using the controller?
@drphelps87 Yes, Mario Kart 64 multiplayer works very good with gles2n64 on a Raspberry Pi 2. But I only tried with 2 players.
I was able to follow this video below to adjust the video settings to get n64 games to display right. But I am having controller issues. Is the video below still the correct way to setup controllers?
When I an in Mario Kart 64 for example, my controllers work fine until the point when you select your racers. My second controller cannot navigate the screen at all. But it can back up the menu a screen.
I have my Pi2 inside an N64 shell running 3.0 beta and it’s all sweet. I have the original N64 reset switch wired to the GPIO board and a keyboard mapper that maps ESC to this key press. All the other Emus have the ability to use ESC as exit so this works great with the exception of SNES and NES emus,(I have tried switching to different ones using ‘x’ on startup).
Is there any other way of getting these emus to recognise the ESC key? My default retroarch.cfg file in /opt/retropi/configs/all seems to have this setup but no joy.
I know you can use joypad buttons to do this and I currently use start and select to exit but I really want them all to use the reset switch.
I am having issues with the performance of some of the more demanding games, in particular Star Fox. I am getting quite a lot of sound distortion and frame skipping. I have tried switching emulators and also recompiled from binaries but no joy. I know the Pi2 is at optimum configuration as N64 ROMS and PSX are running fine.
on going issues with n64 sound while using compiled retropie v2.3.
fresh start with retropie v2.6 image, sound working great with pi2 overclock.
Issues with fan noise. Reduced fan voltage from 12v to 5v. (removed from 12v stepup circuit) will test for awhile if still too loud may look at reducing voltage to 3.3v.
I did this today and I am so chuffed, thanks buzz. For info max0r I used the gles2n64 emulator with defualt screen size and Mario Kart works like a dream, no sound pops or glitches. I now have an N64 again, even got my pi inside one with USB ports wired to the front where the old N64 ones were. Loving it.
Today I installed a fresh RetroPie 3.0. When pressing ‘x’ at rom loading and selecting a different default emulator, I get:
‘Error: Specified Video Plugin not found: ‘mupen64plus-video-n64.so’
Same with ‘mupen64plus-video-rice.so’
Only ‘lr-mupen64plus’ works, but with many graphic glitches (e.g. in Mario Kart)
Which version of retropie are you using? If you do a full binary update or better yet start fresh with a 3.0 SD image you’ll be able to select which plugin you want at the beginning when you open up a game by pressing x or m. Then you can just change the default emulator to mupen64plus rice.
I am trying to change my video plugin on mupen64 from the gles2n64 to the rice video Linux plug in, but I am unsure what to type in to make the change. any help would be appreciated
I’ve got the Mayflash (HuiJia) n64 to USB adapter, which I’ve been trying to use on retropie. I did as ceuse said and tried to configure the controllers for retroarch with the above console commands, but it only allowed me to do the configuration with one of the controllers.
After that, when I ran any ROM each controller worked for initial selection things (where normally only player 1 would have control) and as soon as both players had controller, the second controller was unresponsive.
So I’m not sure I can say that I’m confident about the Mayflash adapter, unless someone can point out my mistakes?

I figured it out forgot to update this but I expanded the file system in the Raspi-config I switched sd cards to a 32gb on and was trying to do it over the network with an ethernet cable plugged into it the WiFi dingle doesn’t work still I’ll try your guys solutions for that. Also is there anyway to get the n64 emulator to run smoother.
As for buzz the first thing anyone who is half intelligent does when there emulator doesn’t work does is google why and what files it can work with. I’m not half intelligent but I figured that would be the first solution, but I should have blamed the memory first.
I was dissapointed to see you have no replies because I have the exact same problem? I’m using an N64 USB controller which works fine on most emulators like SNES, but all the buttons are mixed up on GBA?? It makes little sense to me – there’s nothing that would screw anything up in the gba retroarch.cfg so I have no idea?
I have a May Flash N64 Controller Adapter for PC USB to use with two original N64 controllers. Originally I tried playing Mario 64 and nothing would work. On a hunch, I put a ROM into the N64 Mupen folder, and then the game worked with one controller. Then I wanted to try Mario Party with two controllers. It seems it’ll only recognize the first controller to press something on game startup, but not the other controller.
Has anyone ever come across this? Is there a fix for this so I can have two controllers plugged into the adapter with one USB? Thanks!
First i updated the binaries for mupen64plus, retroarch and lr-mupen64plus. This meant that the title screen came up properly but the roms ran at <1fps.
By updating just the mupen64plus and lr-mupen64plus via source it allowed me to change the emulator being used with the N64 roms, which i couldn’t do before. So now i changed the emulator for mario kart and it works great, so i just have different n64 emulators set for different roms.
I’ve done some searching on this blog and can’t seem to find a definitive answer if this is possible or not. If there’s a thread with this answer, feel free to just link me there so I can take a look!
Basically, I know that N64 and MAME games recognize my 3rd and 4th controllers because those systems had 4 player support native to the system (i.e. N64 had 4 ports and arcade cabinets had 4 joysticks). However, I can’t get NES, SNES, or Genesis games to work.
I know these systems required multitaps, which seems to be the hangup since the emulators don’t have that support. My question is: is there a way to get this to work?
I have noticed that at least in the NES game i specifically checked (Bomberman 2), it recognizes a 3rd controller, but the controller doesn’t work. I would have chalked it up as not working at all if Bomberman hadn’t recognized the 3rd controller being plugged in, but since it did I’m wondering if there’s just something I haven’t config’d properly?
I just did it yesterday, updated the script, and did a full binary install and everything worked swimmingly. Took no longer than an hour tops.
Then if you want specific emulators compiled from source such as mupen64plus-testing you can do that afterwards. That way you’ll at least know everything else is functioning as well as saving you a lot of time. But to each their own . Just my two cents :)
All the games you mentioned work except for mk trilogy for n64.I have tested all of these myself!Go with mk for mame,then you get the arcade version not some shity port!
Retroarch is using the FCEUMM core. Not sure whioch one that is. I’ve got it OC’d to 1ghz. Genesis is now playing well nes is still slow.
Ok I got the speed issue solved completely. Updated overclocking setttings, will post, 2.1amp power supply. and 44100 khz sound for retroarch. I still dont’ have meupen64 completely working but that’s next step. I LOVE GoldenEye and Mario Kart!
have you tried switching emulators when pressing “x” or “m” shortly after starting a rom?
If you do another binary install it should revert your mupen64plus to the stable version (I think). That said if you are not sure what other changes might be affecting your installation it might be best to just reflash the SD card if there are not too many changes you would like to keep.
There are some videos linked from this forum that give more info regarding N64 emulation, although I am not sure if those are completely up to date tbh.
I updated the binaries and that fixed some issues I had on super Mario 64 which now worked fine but still had issues on Mario kart for some reason.
I updated to the experimental mupen64 and its made things a lot worse, everything displays as it should but it runs at about 1-2 fps.
Admittedly I have messed around with a lot trying to fix it, how can I uninstall the experimental package? Or do you think I should just wipe the SD and start over?
The emulator-specific rom folders will be deprecated soon because it is now possible to choose the emulator used per system (and rom) for that matter. After doing a binary install (which is actually an update in your case) you could try to update the mupen64plus libretro core from source as an individual emulator from the setup script.
I’m having some problems with N64 emulation on my raspberry pi 2.
Its a very fresh and recent install, latest image of retropie.
When trying to use mario kart 64 the title screen is completely unreadable, the colours are all there but its all blurred together and you can’t make out anything, but if you push on through the menus, which have the same problem, and actually get to a race, it runs absolutely fine.
I’ve been trying to find a way to fix this, but haven’t come up with anything.
the last thing i tried was switching the rom into the mupen64plus rom folder instead of the n64 folder it was in before, the problem is now that the n64 emulator won’t even show up in retropie.
Does anyone have any ideas on what i could try next? or if there’s a way to get the mupen64plus emulator to show up so i can try using that?
