    A couple of the games on N64 require an expansion pak… How would I make one for the game to recognize?

    Also is it possible to have the N64 rumble pak activate the PS3 controller vibrate function?

    How hard is it to set up different controllers from different systems? I.E. using the N64 controller with the N64 emulator?

    If I use the analog output for video and sound the emulator works fine. But if I use HDMI for video and analog output for sound I can’t get the sound working.

    I set the output to headphone jack and checked the cfg file. The value for output jack is set to 1 so it should work. All other emulators work fine. Even all other N64 emulators have sound. So what gives?

    Hello guys!
    I switched to PI3 with 3.6! It is not the first time I install retropie, but at the moment I can not turn the rice mupen plugin properly. I have sound but just a black screen with all the roms that need rice (640×480). I have already installed the muppen64 separately from the retropie_setup and ran a full update. unsuccessfully. ngles works perfectly.

    Another strange thing is that I have frezzers if my PS3 controller Cloon is over Bluetotth. And I need to run sudo sixad –start after all restarts in order to connect.

    In addition to hyell’s fix I found that the:

    /opt/retropie/configs/all/autoconf.cfg has reicast set to an input of 1. I changed it to 4.

    Before changing the input number whenever I would reset my device_id’s and device_mappings this information it would go back to the default values whenever I started the dreamcast emulator.

    I’m using 2 wireless Xbox 360 controllers and both are working on Power Stone in the dreamcast emulator.

    are you talking about a raspberry pi 2 or 3? i’m going to assume you mean a 3, although i played mario kart 64 at 1080p on the 2 in 4 player, although it is fairly choppy on some tracks, and has a lot of sound distortion.

    it sounds like yours is already playable at 1080p? i didn’t say it was 100% full speed! right now i’m running it with gles2n64 at 1080p and it is pretty choppy in 4 player but playable, if you don’t mind the sound distortion. in 2 player it only has very minor sound distortion and small amounts of hitches. it seems fine to me.

    interestingly, i tried lower resolutions in gles2n64 and it didn’t seem to make any difference. i’m not sure what causes the choppiness there but it’s evidently not the fillrate or CPU (i checked CPU usage throughout and it was pretty low)

    Hey this is a great tutorial. My 3.2″ adafruit screen is on its way. You said it was pretty simple, but how do you set up the USB audio? And also, with your image, I can’t seem to find some of the emulators on there. Is there a way to get the n64 and gameboy emulators on it? Thanks!

    Hi guys. I’m also trying to get Mario Kart 64 to work at full speed for multiplayer games. I have a 40′ FullHD TV as a display, but I don’t mind if I need a lower resolution for the game to work at full speed.

    I’d love to play this game in 4 player multiplayer at full speed. However, right now I cant’t get it to workat full speed constantly even with two players. From what I understand, the N64 video emulators use the display’s default resolution to render the game, and I can see that in the game, because everything which is made out of polygons looks pretty crisp.

    I tried using all the emulators (RICE dowsn’t work, GlideN64 is slower, glesN64 is the best but still a bit slow), changing to (CEA-1) 640×480 but apart from messing with my aspect ratio (it stretched the game to fit 16:9), the polygons looked just as crisp and the game feels slow in some areas. On the fisrt track, Luigi’s Raceway it’s stuttering ever so slightly everywhere, except in the tunnels. I get a boost in display speed every time I go through them. :)

    My question, @dankcushions, is how did you manage to make the game playable at 1080p. Where are the settings that you changed, and what should I change if I value playability instead of resolution?

    It’s very well done and the guy that supports it is very active, he answers every single question and updates his image very often.

    I don’t know if you just bought your XU4 or not, but you’ll see that there is a big problem with the latest mali drivers… There is a huge tearing issue with the 2D scrolling games (Sonic, rayman 1 etc…) and Vsync doesn’t work with these drivers so forget about it to fix the problem.
    I personally use an old kernel just because of that, but in consequence I have to deal with an old problem very annoying, the “black screen issue” (it has been fixed in the latest drivers), basically you can crash your system in certain conditions and you get a black screen when it happens. I managed to avoid it in almost all the situations but one, the only case where my system can still crash sometimes, is when I quit a game with Reicast, which is very frustrating since I bought the XU4 especially for its performances with Reicast, mupen64 and ppsspp. :/

    Throttling is not an issue here. My Pi 3 keeps well below 60°C in any N64 game that I tested. I kept Donkey Kong 64 running for 8 hours straight without any issues and my temperature reading was 56.8°C (135°F) at the most.

    The problem is definetly somewhere between the Bluetooth module and the PS3 drivers for Bluetooth.

    The problem with mupen64plus and hotkeys is, everytime you start the programm, the mupen64plus.cfg gets edited. To change that, edit the runfile for mupen64plus.

    Last night, I ran apt and also updated the retropie script and updated my emulators. Other than redoing mupen64plu.cfg, everything went swimmingly except now mupen64plus is refusing to recognize my save files. I’m a bit lost as to what to do; Google searches have proven unfruitful. The files are there and named properly with the proper permissions/ownership.

    Any thoughts?

    hey folks just got my new pi 3,got sd image etc and transferred all my roms but for some reason the snes and nes roms are not getting found for some reason ..got mame n64 megadrive all working(have a dvd with all romsets and emulators)all work fine on my pc and ive tried zip files and all other accepted file types and all not showing,even though same as other roms sets,
    any one shed any light on this,
    would b much appreciated

    everything was just transferred via usb stick if that helps

    For some strange reason muppen64 on RPi2 runs slower when I hook it up to my computer screen with and HDMI to VGA converter. When it’s hooked up to the TV via analogue output it runs very smooth. Is there any particular reason for that?

    Hello friends!
    I am running retropie 3.5 on a Pi 2
    I have gone through some trial and error but finally got Zelda: Ocarina of Time running smoothly and I have finally gotten all of my controls working properly in the main part of the game (action gameplay).

    My problem is that my A and B button do not work when I am in the Menu screen. This prevents not just saving the game but also crucial functions like equipping weapons. Has anyone had any experience with this and have a fix?

    seems about full speed but i haven’t tested 4 player. with my pi 2 i was able to run 4 player at 1080p with only a little bit of slowdown using gles2n64, so i might use that for MK64.

    gliden64 is the slowest (but most accurate and compatible) plugin and runs at your displays resolution by default which no pi GPU can cope with. change the display mode to CEA1 for n64 using the runcommand menu.

    I got my 8Bitdo NES30 Pro to work by following Floob’s video tutorial step-by-step. The only thing I did differently was to bind the controller using “power + R1” instead of “power”, so it runs in Joystick mode and lets you bind L2 and R2 (which did not work in the video tutorial).

    Following this video and once you configured the controller in emulation station, the controller should be set up for all emulators, except for Megadrive/Genesis. This is also mentioned in the video. You’ll need to switch to 6 button controller and configure your button mappings manually for Megadrive.

    There’s another problem regarding the hotkey mappings in mupen64plus (N64 emulator). I found a quick and dirty solution for that one by digging through the forums, but it seems there is also a way to do that using the Configuration Editor – I haven’t found that setting yet, but I will have a look at it as soon as I’m home again. However, here’s the thread where I describe the problem.

    On a side-note:
    Downgrading your conrtoller firmware will add problems rather than solving yours. The Joystick mode has just been added with version 1.69, so you will be stuck with your shoulder buttons (L2 and R2) not working.

    The Pi 2 works well for me in terms for N64, I was surprised how bad it is on the Pi3 especially with the extra power.

    Hello,

    since I updated my RPi to RetroPie 3.6 I have some problems with the Button-Mapping on N64 and Dreamcast.
    The config Files are all fresh, I don’t take them from my old installation.

    I use a wired Xbox 360 gamepad with the userspace driver.

    N64: The mapping of the “Exit Emulator” button doesn’t work correctly. It resets to default values every time I start a game (for my configuration the default mapping means “J1B8/B9”, which means, that only the second controller can exit the game. If I play with just one controller I can not exit).

    Dreamcast: First of all I am very happy that this emulator works better after the update. I get now to the loading screen of every game (after setting date and time and choose a memory slot). Every game tells me to hit “Start” but that doesn’t work.

    I searched for both problems and found several hints but nothing worked. It seems that most informations are outdated (mostly for dreamcast the config files mentioned in nearly all help-topics I found are not in the described path or the entrys are not in them).

    Hope someone has an advise for my problem.

    On my Pi2 I have Mario Kart 64 running very well, I’m using GLideN64 on mupen64plus.

    Today I put it on my Pi3 and it runs so slowly, what should I try next? My pi2 was overclocked to pi2 settings, my pi3 is stock, is it that?

    Hi,

    i have two Xiaomi controllers and want to use both in mupen64plus.
    However one controller is working flawless and for the other one, the buttons are just randomly mapped over the buttons.

    I tried to copy my controller config in mupen64plus.cfg and edited the sdl-controller number.
    I also tried the same thing with AutoInput.Ini but a cant get both working respectivly configured.

    has anybody a hint what i am missing, it took me already some time to figure out that everytime mupen64plus is started the config file was overriden :/

    as testing with N64 is a little bias as it don’t run too great on a Pi3, anyway!

    @pi-guy You have some good ideas there, Have a few cases and your right most don’t have good ventilation/holes

    For my final config I have ordered a generic looking case from Amazon it has no fan but does have mount points for a fan with plenty of vent hole at the bottom and top, as such I may pull the air out of the case with the fan I hope this will draw air over the board from the bottom vent holes. I have a few 40mm fans lying around but ordered a 40mm noctua 5v fan for the reduce db level that it has,

    Running the fan from the GPIO pins 5v rail.

    Not going to bother with heat sink I feel the fan will be enough. With my 40mm fan testing I have dropped the temp a good 15-20c thats plenty I believe.

    I have used heatsinks on my pi1 and pi2 but to be honest I don’t think they really need them

    But your right over clocking will not kill a Pi but the heat will. Like you I have run my over clocked pis for years now with just heat sink and in cases with no ventilation to speak of and they are still running fine.

    The Pi3 clocking settings are more hit and miss at the moment, It would be nice if an official overclock setting was released by the Pi Foundation

    Once I get my fan and case sorted I will add a pic, the fan will be with me next week the case on the other hand is on a boat from China so who knows :)

    I’ve been thinking of getting a cooling solution myself. I’ve seen (on Ebay) heatsinks with fans attached (yes, screwed onto the heatsink) probably best solution for my setup. You’ll definitely want to either go with a fan-in-case or a modular case (like the official rasp pi case) where you can remove the top without the case falling apart. I saw a few youtube videos, one guy does specific measurements with/without fan, with/without heatsink, and combinations of the 4. According to his results, the heatsinks are worthless but for as cheap as they are I would probably do it regardless. I noticed about a 5-10C change on my Pi2 after installing 3 heatsinks w/o fan. And the heat sinks are soo cheap – plus it kind of makes the board “look” a bit more sophisticated. No matter where you buy the heatsinks from I would almost certainly rip the tape off and replace it with double-sided thermal tape – you can remove the original tape from the heatsinks with a razor blade and alcohol. I love that they have the fans powered by the GPIO board now and provide the proper connectors for it. I’d also be curious if there’s a way to change the fan speed, I’d probably run mine at a higher RPM – the fan would probably die faster but for $5 to replace….who cares? As for push/pull – it again depends on your case IMHO, most Pi cases I’ve seen have poor ventilation, I would most likely push from outside case to inside case if your using a standard case, pulling from inside the case to the outside may decrease fan life due to lack of ventilation. My thoughts…when I get a fan/heatsink combo…is that I would create some ventilation holes/strips at strategic locations along the sides of the case using a Dremel tool. Just my two cents.     i’m interested in what the GPU overclocks yield. the pi2 had a strange relationship with the GPU and core (L2 cache) clock speed, but i’m not sure how it is the pi3. you can also clock the v3d speed separately, but again, there were ratios involved. it wasn’t always as simple as ‘make it higher. see http://elinux.org/RPiconfig#Clocks_relationship and http://linuxonflash.blogspot.co.uk/2015/02/a-look-at-raspberry-pi-2-performance.html and

    dreamcast, n64 and ppsspp don’t max the pi3 CPU at standard clock speeds so i don’t see any sort of CPU overclocking helping that sort of emulation on the pi3, but it depends on the various relationships at play.

I honestly believe that purely overclocking the Pi doesn’t reduce the life – heat does (experience: Sr. Systems Administrator for fortune 500 company) – so if you don’t have a proper cooling solution and if you don’t keep an eye on temperatures to make sure the solution is “acceptable” then you’re looking at frying it.     Hi,

    I wanted to achieve two objectives.

    1. Setup an overlay for SNES, N64, Atari & Megadive on a per console basis.
    2. Setup overlays for MAME on a per game basis. Using these overlays.

    In regards to objective one I found a Youtube video by Floob which also references a post on these forums which may help with objective one. Can anyone point me in the direction of this post i.e Setting up overlays on a per system basis.

    In regards to objective 2 I understand that MAME4ALL is likely the most reliable source of ROMS on retro pie (I had previous problems getting Mame Roms to work at all). With this in mind I believe those overlays in objective 2 have been created to use Retroarch (Liberto not Mame4all). Is there a way to get them working with Mame4all?

    Any help greatly appreciated as I am unable to progress my build without this information.

    the libretro version of mupen64plus just has one entry on the runcommand menu – you have to set plugins on this one up using the internal retroarch GUI (select+X) and go to quick menu > core options.

    however you probably shouldn’t be running the libretro version (out of date, worse performance). choose the standalone version for each plugin via the runcommand.

    Hi guys, I second the opinion that the pi-bluetooth service or ps3 service are at fault. I connected one of the controllers through the USB cable and the emulators have run for 4 hours straight with no problems. I tested Mario Kart for n64, TOCA2, Final Fantasy VII, Tekken 3 and Carmageddon for PSX and there was no problem, even though in the past my system froze in each and every one of those games.

    To finish the test I exited the emulators and tried to connect the second controller via Bluetooth. The controller didn´t even have time to pair and emulatorstation froze. I guess I´m stuck with wired controllers for now, but I´d still try to get to the root of the problem.

    Could there be a communication problem between the PS3 wireless service and the bluetooth service? I have yet to find other posts on the internet complaining that bluetooth on the rPi froze the system.

    As far as a I know, you select the video plugins for mupen64plus in the runcommand menu. Its been a while since I did it, so I don’t remember if there is a specific option for changing the video plugin for N64 or you use the default emulator setting. Either way, the options will be mupen64plus-rice, mupen64plus-glide64 etc.
