Hi,

I have installed retropie 2.6 by burning image from https://www.petrockblock.com/retropie/retropie-downloads/ (raspberry pi 2) using win32diskimager

Installation was completed and I was able to load retropie and configured my xbox 360 controller to control it. However, when I look through the emulator list, I only saw about 3-5 available emulators (IBM, apple 2, mame or something like that). I did not see other emulators such as PSX, N64, SNES, etc. In addition, I have also gone to retropie setup and ran the binaries installation, but this did not help at all. Did I miss a step? or, is the reason why it is not showing simply because I don’t have any ROMs inside the respective emulators? Please advise, thanks!

is zmachine using own sdl1/2 packages? We had some keyboard issues with mupen64plus and darkplaces because both packages used their own sdl libs.

Not to be the bad guy here, I just wanted to say that I have read bad things about the Qumox controllers. Most of them seem to be of bad quality and the N64 one especially has the problem, that the analog stick isn’t really an analog stick at all but just mimics the D-Pad (even sending the same signals) and can’t be used for analog input at all. Just check some reviews on the controllers if you’s like confirmation on this…

Hello,
today i updated my PSX and N64 Emulators using ./Retropie-Setup. After this i rebooted and updated the Retropi itself with this command

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade -y

after this the boot failed.

This error came up:

Panic VFS :Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block

Here is the Text from my SD-Card cmdline.txt

dwc_otg.lpm_enable=0 console=ttyAMA0,115200 kgdboc=ttyAMA0,115200 console=tty1 root=/dev/mmcblk0p2 rootfstype=ext4 elevator=deadline rootwait

and issue.txt from SD-Card

Any way to help?
Or myabe a way to get the savegames from PSX as backup when i need to reinstall the SD card?!

Just gonna jump in on that controller question:

I set up my RetroPie about a week ago, and I started using an old wired xbox controller I had. It worked fairly well, and did everything it had to.

However, I also recently purchased some USB N64 controllers to use instead, as I thought that they would be more authentic, and feel more retro.

I HIGHLY reccomend using N64 controllers – they work a treat. I mostly emulate SNES games, so while a SNES controller would seem like an obvious choice, the N64 controller works I think much better.

For starters, the N64 controller has a D-pad and analog stick, but unlike an xbox controller, both work to control the SNES D-pad, even though I’ve configured the analog stick as an analog stick.

The Z trigger I’ve set to select, which works well, and whilst the N64 has no X or Y buttons, 2 of the C buttons are automatically used as x and y when playing SNES games.

There is no better alternative in my mind.

There is a large range of choice of N64 controllers out there, personally I went for some fairly cheap ones, but they work great and I reccomend them:

Sorry for the rant about controllers, just thought I’d let you know how great I think these are xD

I’m not 100% sure what emulator I’m using, although I think it’s something along the lines of mupen64 as that crops up a lot in the code when a game is launching.

As for the folders I only seem to have the plane old n64 folder? There’s a c64 but I believe that’s a different console altogether?

Thank you for your help.

Hey there,
Which ROM folder are you using / which emulator? The ROM folder which has just n64 is the libretro emulation directory, which is a more precise and accurate emulator, but at the cost of (for some reason) the menu / navigation and speed of emulation
the n64mupen64plus folder is the Mupen64plus directory, which is a less accurate emulator, but runs at a much faster rate and is able to show menus (i prefer this one)

Does your N64 emulator run smoothly? I’ve been struggling to get mine to work, the games that do run are really slow and blurred.

What are these configurations?

I’m afraid I can’t help with your solution, but I have a question of my own which you may be able to answer:

I just managed to get the atari800 emulator working and running .atr/.ATR files, the games open and everything but I have no idea how to control anything.

I am currently using 2 USB wired N64 controllers, which I’ve configured through retroarch.cfg and they work great in libretro emulators (NES, SNES, GB, GBC, etc.).

However I can use neither these or the USB keyboard I have plugged in to control these games? The most I’ve managed to get is firing a ball in “Pong 2” but I’ve tried seemingly all controls on the N64 controllers and keyboard and I can’t for the life of me get the paddles to move.
[I also tried asteroids but couldn’t get past what looked like a demo sequence or menu].

Any help or even just pointing me to another forum would be much appreciated.

1. There are two different folders for N64 ROMs. Each folder will utilise a different emulator. Note that the non-standard N64 emulator doesn’t use the standard button mappings and often has to be tweaked separately.
2. You can either edit it via ftp or locally(or SSH) using Nano. If you do it via FTP in Windows, I recommend using Notepad++ to edit the files as Notepad does not lay out the file nicely.

To edit the file locally:

sudo nano /opt/retropie/configs/all/retroarch.cfg

This edits the primary config file and affects all Retroarch Emulators (which is almost all of them).

Each emulator has its own folder for individual configuration. EG:

sudo nano /opt/retropie/configs/psx/retroarch.cfg

The above lets you specify extra config just for the PSX.

I have everything working 100% with the standard Pi2 overclock of 1000mhz.

I believe I’m running 128mb GPU RAM.

Current using: MAME, PSX, Sega CD, Sega Genesis, SNES (including superFX games), NES. N64 games vary in accuracy but the ones that do work are 100%.

Hey there,
To be honest, i wouldn’t risk going through all the effort to find that it doesn’t work/ is an unstable build of the emulator, however most new images of RetroPie (for example, 2.5 to 2.6) will come with tested emulator updates that are stable> However, if the emulators usually run at a high enough speed, they will usually only receive slight updates.
If you would like to increase performance, over clock your pi higher than the standard clock.
my current clock is:
1050 CPU
500 Ram
550 Gpu
0 Overvolt
i have found it runs stable at these speeds, but im going to start a topic to see if cpu/gpu overclocking is more important for n64 and psx, and to see if i can even under clock some areas to overclock others (eg gpu down for cpu up)
Any Questions, Please Ask!

HI ajw, I suggest you start fresh and download the RetroPie image for Rpi2 from the downloads section on this site.

I use the Pi2 over clock setting and find that is all I need, also set your gpu mem to 128meg.

I see you have seen my other comparison vids, but did you see my n64 setup vid? That can help you setting up mupen with the rice plugin which I find works best, good luck!

Your most likely using the libretro version of mupen with the glide plugin and getting scrambled text, switch over to Mujpen64plus and use the rice plugin, a lot of the games with scrambled text will now run fine.

Like neighbourhood nerd said as well, some games simply don’t work so keep your expectations low.

Check out this vid for some help with setup:

Hayden, make sure you check out the vid below on n64 setup, it might solve some of your problems, Mario and smash should work fine if you tinker, also make sure your overclocked to the Pi 2 setting for best performance, send me a PM if you don’t know how to do this.

For the N64: Sorry, some games simply don’t work properly. This is a software limitation, not a hardware one. Emulating the N64 is very fiddly.

You may be able to force a different aspect ratio by editing the Retroarch.cfg file for SNES. Lots of guides available on how to do this.

Hi all.

So, i’ve almost finished to setup everything as i want.
But i still have 2 problems.

First, i get scrambled text in most of N64 games (text is unreadable) in the menus.
I’m on 2.6 image, and i’ve updated mupen64 from source, but it’s still the same…
I have no problem when i play the game but menus are unreadable.

Second, i can’t get Snes roms to run in 16/9 (i’m using snes9x).
Every other emulator is running in 16/9 (genesis, nes, master system), but snes refuses to do it, although i’ve tried a lot of settings in es_systems.cfg and retroarch.cfg..

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I’m trying to setup everything as i want, while waiting for the controlblock to be available again, so i can wire and use my arcade controls freshly bought ^^

Thanks in advance.

davejaca, thanks for responding! That kind of works, but with a problem.

So, say I start a game, and then open the RetroArch menu, go to the input section and switch the controllers; then I save that config, and overwrite the retroarch.cfg file (as per the instructions in the video you linked). That is the same as taking the current retroarch.cfg file, and editing it directly (I’ve tried it both ways, and can confirm).

In both instances, what is happening is this…

input_player1_joypad_index = 0
input_player2_joypad_index = 1

… is turning into this:

input_player1_joypad_index = 1
input_player2_joypad_index = 0

Basically, Player 1 and 2 are switched. This works for every game and every system. I can turn the Raspberry Pi off and on, and it will work.

However, there is still a problem. The above only works if I connect both controllers to the system before starting a game. If I only connect 1 controller (say I want to play a single player game by myself), then that controller will be seen as Player 2, because it says so in the config file. I won’t be able to control anything, since that controller is Player 2, and there is no Player 1 connected. At this point, if I then connect the 2nd controller, it will be forced to become Player 1. Then if I exit the game and emulator, and then enter a game again, the Players will be switched again (correctly, kind of). This is a bit too whacky of a side-effect for me to call it a solution.

Essentially, my problem is this (as stated from my first post):
Connect one controller, that controller is seen as Player 1.
Connect two controllers, Controller 1 is Player 2, Controller 2 is Player 1.

If I do a jstest on the controllers, Controller 1 correctly identifies as js0, and Controller 2 correctly identifies as js1. So the issue is not occurring in the operating system, as it sees the controllers as their correct input indexes, but in retroarch somewhere.

Thanks for your suggestion, but it’s only a band-aid. In order for it to work, I’ll have to connect both controllers every time I use the system, even if it’s just 1 person playing.

Update: Also, interestingly, the Controller indexes switch for Mupen64Plus, which is not governed by RetroArch settings. This must mean that the issue is not directly related to RetroArch. MAME, however, does not have this issue, and the Controller indexes work just fine.

Hi.
I just got my Raspberry Pi 2and intend to use it as an all in one console. Currently it works very well with all of the older generation consoles like SNES and NES but I am trying to make it run Nintendo 64 games. I can run Mario 64 flawlessly but Smash Bros runs slowly. I thought that Pi2 had more than enough power to run N64 games.

I have overclocked my system a bit like so:
#arm_freq=1000 # I do not use this. Just use default CPU freq
gpu_mem_512=384 # should not be used but still include it.
gpu_mem_1024=512
core_freq=500
sdram_freq=500
over_voltage=6

The Smash Bros problem seems to be that it is only running on about 10 frames per second.
My question is, does someone have experience in running N64, PS1 or such consoles with success for most games and can help me solve this problem?

I have a Rpi B+. using a PS3 controller over BT. Using a 32gb sony uhs1 microSD card

Installed Raspabian then Retropie on top of that. I have a script that runs before ES starts to check for a controller if it doesn’t find one it checks till it does then allows you to continue to ES.

However performance of the machine is slow. NES emulator specifically. It’s slow and there are sound issues. Genesis isn’t quite as slow but there are still sound issues. Here are the things I have done to help improve the preformance. N64 won’t run at all, I can hear sound but I see nothing.

Changed the GPU memory settings in /etc/boot.txt tried 256, 384 no difference. Some people suggest 128 but ES doesn’t run with that.

Changed the video settings in the es_systems config to run NES games (retroarch) in mode 1 (480p). This didn’t make much of an impact.

Took out WIFI card. This seemed to work at first but it no longer has an impact on performance.

Changed the overclock settings to turbo. I did a back to back comparison with turbo and medium and there was no change in performance when using retroarch for NES.

Changed the sample rate in the retroarch config to 44100.

Changed the audio driver for retroarch to SDL. This brought up an error in retroarch and it must have reverted at runtime to the other audio driver because I still had sound but it said it couldn’t find the SDL driver.

If I could atrribute the slowdown to anything I would think it started around the time I re-installed mupenplus through the retropie setup from source.

Not sure where to go next. Thanks in advance guys. Let me know if you need any files or settings info I’ll post whatever.
I’m not really certain starwing was as fast as the pocketsnes emulation. Pocketsnes runs really snappy but seems to be toooo fast. I can’t remember it ran so fast at all. snes9x-next seems to run slower but there is no audio crackling or input lag. Retroarch runs at decent 60fps. I really think snes9x-next resamples the real behavior of the original hardware.
Please remember that “Star Wing” is a PAL game and should be running at 50Hz and not 60Hz

If you are forcing 60Hz it will be running too fast! Although many games were just slowed down to 50Hz for PAL. From N64 onwards PAL conversions got more reliable.

Hi! I’m having a bit of problem with my retropie on my rpi 2 and n64 emulation (mainly graphical issues). i used to run the same image on a b and b+ but i updated using the sudo apt-get upgrade/update method (May be the problem). So far super Mario 64, Mario kart and banjo kazooie all work fine except they are not running very smoothly a fair amount of the time (i have several link titles too, but they run at about half speed almost all the time).

Whenever i try to run a game like golden eye 007, the menu works perfectly, but when ever i get into a game like the first level, the cut scene is very laggy, freezes every so often and then jumps to where it should be. as soon as i start the level, the screen freezes until i get shot or any other animation and then freezes again (this repeats again until i die, which has an annoyingly smooth falling over cut scene) the music is still playing through all of this, albeit slightly choppy (all roms i am using are not corrupted / hacked)

I also get this with SSB. Whenever i launch it, the animation is fine until the hand goes in the box, then it freezes. It will suddenly unfreeze when the camera is staring at link, however link and the hand are both black. it will then play with those two missing character models, with everything else textured, until the hand makes a 3 or 2 and then crashes again (music also still playing in the back ground)

i don’t seem to have the same file directories as other people do from a fresh download of 2.6, so its lead me to believe that it didn’t upgrade properly with the apt-get command.

I’m guessing that its the video driver / settings either not being updated and still optermised for a BCM2835 SoC, or my settings are not correctly configured / need to modify some files, due to the fact the music plays just fine in the background (sometimes slightly choppy)

here are my current system specs for my pi 2 (running on a decent power supply)
Arm Freq: 1050
Core Freq: 550
SDram Freq: 500
Over_Volt: 0 (would like to keep my warranty)
Gpu Mem: 384Mb
Ps3 Controller
Samsung EVO 32gb Class U1

(sorry for the block of text…)
any ideas on what i can do to improve emulation an get it as good as TechTipsta’s gameplay (comparison video). All ideas welcome!
Thanks, Aj.

Yes, I know ;) This line was by default at the end of ‘/opt/retropie/configs/all/retroarch.cfg’. > “input_enable_hotkey_btn = nul
After I changed the hotkey behaviour: ‘/home/pi/RetroPie-Setup/retropie_setup.sh’ > “Configuration” > “Change hotkey behaviour” > “Press ALT to enable hotkeys.”, this line changed into “input_enable_hotkey_btn = alt” and “input_menu_toggle = F1” was added.

In my last post I listed the behaviour in every emulator I want to use twice. One time with “Hotkeys enabled (default)” and the other time with “Press ALT to enable hotkeys”. The best result I had with the second option: I was able to open RGUI with ALT+F1, switch shaders with ALT+M/N and exit the emulator with ALT+ESC. But only in SNES and Playstation emulator. In N64 emulator only ALT+ESC for exiting works.. nothing more. Even the button (btn#6; SELECT) doesn’t work. And if I try to use left analog stick (btn#9) for exiting the emulator it doesn’t work at all.. SNES, N64, PS. :/

So I got myself a Pi2 and set up the awesome RetroPie pack with everything running well. I set up the basic Raspian setup then downloaded RetroPie and installed. Overclocked to 1000 and 2 overvolt.

Things run well, except when I see videos on YouTube of testing the Pi 2’s power with games like Star Fox, it runs great on their videos with the minor over locking, but rather stuttery on mine with a bit of lag and a poor frame rate compared to their videos.

I’ve set the GPU memory to 128, over even over clock to 1100 with 6 overvolts, but it doesn’t make a difference. Something seems off. I even checked to make sure I actually had a Raspberry Pi 2 and they didn’t trick me lol but yes, it appears to be a Pi 2 with nothing problematic about it.

Am I missing a common situation or setting that is necessary for running games like Star Fox well.

I haven’t tried n64 games yet, but I imagine they may have similar problems.

Anyone have similar problems or issues?
The help would really be appreciated.

Hi,

I recently started using RetroPie on the Pi2 using the 2.6 SD card image and it worked extremely well.

Some things I am still confused about after reading the available documentation:

– What is the correct way to use the Setup script on the SD card image? How do I upload emulators (binary update vs source update vs individual updates) and what potentially gets overwritten? I have looked at most of the RetroPie-Setup script source just wanted to make sure what the “official” way for this is.

– When using sselph’s external scraper the gamelists and images get stored in the roms subfolder for the system. My ES seems to use the files in ~/.emulationstation though. Is there any way to switch this?

– Is there some kind of list that gives suggestions which emulators are currently “best” for each system? I tend to cling to the libretro cores since it makes configuring more streamlined but N64 works much better with mupen64 for me so far

Thanks!

Thank you, but I already saw this video. It’s very good.. but he explains how they should behave.

After some hours trying to solve the problem by editing the configs, I decided to begin from scratch. This time with a Raspian image and RetroPie compiled from sources. After that I configured my XBOX360 controller:

input_player1_joypad_index = "0"
input_player1_b_btn = "0"
input_player1_y_btn = "2"
input_player1_select_btn = "6"
input_player1_start_btn = "7"
input_player1_up_btn = "13"
input_player1_down_btn = "14"
input_player1_left_btn = "11"
input_player1_right_btn = "12"
input_player1_a_btn = "1"
input_player1_x_btn = "3"
input_player1_l_btn = "4"
input_player1_r_btn = "5"
input_player1_l2_axis = "+2"
input_player1_r2_axis = "+5"
input_player1_l3_btn = "9"
input_player1_r3_btn = "10"
input_player1_l_x_plus_axis = "+0"
input_player1_l_x_minus_axis = "-0"
input_player1_l_y_plus_axis = "+1"
input_player1_l_y_minus_axis = "-1"
input_player1_r_x_plus_axis = "+3"
input_player1_r_x_minus_axis = "-3"
input_player1_r_y_plus_axis = "+4"
input_player1_r_y_minus_axis = "-4"

..and added input_exit_emulator_btn = “6”, because I want to be able to stop the emulator via controller. Then, without changing any hotkey behaviour, the follwing works (not):

SNES:
Exiting via ESC doesn’t work
RGUI via F1 doesn’t work
Switching shaders via M&N doesn’t work
Exiting via SELECT (btn#6) works

Playstation:
Exiting via ESC doesn’t work
RGUI via F1 doesn’t work
Switching shaders via M&N doesn’t work
Exiting via SELECT (btn#6) works

N64:
Exiting via ESC works
RGUI via F1 doesn’t work
Switching shaders via M&N doesn’t work
Exiting via SELECT (btn#6) doesn’t work

Then I changed the hotkey behaviour to “Press ALT to enabled hotkeys“:

SNES:
Exiting via ALT+ESC works
RGUI via ALT+F1 works
Switching shaders via ALT+M&N works
Exiting via SELECT (btn#6) works

Playstation:
Exiting via ALT+ESC works
RGUI via ALT+F1 works
Switching shaders via ALT+M&N works
Exiting via SELECT (btn#6) works

N64:
Exiting via ALT+ESC works
RGUI via ALT+F1 doesn’t work
Switching shaders via ALT+M&N doesn’t work
Exiting via SELECT (btn#6) doesn’t

I’m really confused. :/ I didn’t change any other configs..

..just for fun I tested input_exit_emulator_btn = “9” to have the analog stick for exiting the emulators: It doesn’t work in SNES, N64 and Playstation. :(

PS: After compiling I had to run this command, because some directories were owned by root. Is this normal?

sudo chown -hR pi:pi /home/pi/

I hope somebody can help me..

Hi there,
what form of saving are you trying to use, because (from what i have heard) N64 Emulation is still in the alpha stages, so you cant save state like you can in SNES/NES/PSX by mapping extra controls etc…
If you are trying to save from inside the game (And it is only this one ROM that you cant save in-game like you could on an original console, for example link games can save and load files properly) make sure your game file isn’t corrupted / have a bad ROM
Any questions, please ask!

Finely got a chance to try out the setting. Mupen still sees the encoder as a joypad even with the mode set to 0 and a name change in mupen64plus.cfg. With the encoder taking up the js0 spot, the playstation controllers take js1 and js2 the games see js0 as the first joypad. I just might have to wait for the controller block to start selling again.

buzz,

I just did a complete binary install after updating the script. I now have the retropi config in emulation station. But, when I run it and go into Setup/Configuration I do not see the options to set default emulators. I specifically want to do this for mupen64plus…

All I did was clean image,expand,update-upgrade,update retropi-setup.sh,binary install. That should have been it right?

no im still at standart. but can that really be the problem?

as said i had the same problems with the rpi B where mem is set to 256 and now with rpi2 its set to 384 and still the same problem.

also i added n64 again and removed turbograph x16 and its working (even though n64 shows twice now since i have a rom in the n64-rice folder).

I think there might be a hardcap on overall roms/systems (since i have the complete libary on most of my systems).

anyone has an idea how to bugfix / log the issue? as said it freezes directly at startup with half of the gui lodaded

Hi all,

I am pretty new to RetroPie and I’ve been doing a lot of reading regarding controller setups and key mappings but I still cannot find what I am looking for. I’ve ran Register a RetroArch controller script as well. I apologize in advance if this specific question has been asked already, and if it has, be so kind to redirect me to that post.

I have an F310 Logitech controller and am wanting to know what button corresponds to what button in the config file. I am going to assume the global config file for controls is in /opt/retropie/configs/all/retroarch.cfg but I do not see anything regarding my Logitech controller.

Under the Inputs category of the config file on line 409 is where lines pertaining to controls start becoming uncommented but it doesn’t tell me anything about my F310, just my keyboard..

Do I have to go through trial and error to figure out if the B button on my controller is button 5? There has to be an easier way.. I want to be able to change up the controls dynamically based on what game I am playing. For instance,

I have this same question for the mupen64-plus emulator. I’ve gone inside and edited InputAutoCfg.ini and the other config file as well, but how do I know what axis(2+) is? What is button(6) on my controller? This is type of thing I’d like to know for all emulators. I’ve looked on the mupen64 website and they speak briefly on it. Maybe I am just stupid.

Thanks everyone.

Hello Everybody. im experienceing a huge problem with emulationstation / Retropie.

As soon as i add more then 12 Emulators emulationstation Crashes at startup (the Gui only gets shown till half and then it freezes).

I had the problem on Both RPi-B and now RPI-2.

Active Emulators (at the moment) :

Genesis 32x
Snes
Ps1
GBa
Ports
Gb
Gbc
GameGear
TurboGrafx16
Nes
Sega Master System
Sega Genesis

Before i could Add the PS1 i had to remove my N64 from the list.
Before i could Add the N64 a few weeks ago i had to remove my Atari2600

anyone knows / can recreate the Issue? im kinda clueless what happens.
