I am getting this error code every time I try and launch a game. anyone got any ideas what could be wrong?
Please post what version of mupen64plus you are using. Such as older binary newest source install or experimental etc. And any other settings mupen specific other than default or overclock other than standard turbo.

Ok, after a long time – I have finally managed to fix mine.
First you need the file that brooksyx posted. I used WINSCP to transfer the files as it is easy to use. You must replace the file in the destination “/opt/retropie/emulators/mupen64plus-rpi/test/libmupen64plus.so.2.0.0” with the file posted. Restart the PI and start up the rom.
It will run BUT with a lot of lag. You must overclock this to speed it up. You can do this by accessing the pi command input (I don’t know what it is called.) I accesed it by pressing f4, as I am on emulation station. Type “sudo raspi-config” and scroll down to the 7th option – Overclock. Choose an overclock level then restart the pi. Start up the game and it shouldn’t lag too much.
Hello sir, I like yourself am very new to the whole linux/pi thing, but I have been learning alot the past week and am falling in love with it and would love to try to help people on here, like proxycell did with me early
when I started trying to add games or roms I was wondering the same thing, why are there only 3 emulators shown, I soon found out that as you add roms to the different rom folders pre installed onto retropie they will show up in emulation station.

I apologize I was trying to move the whole folder into the /opt/retropie/emulators/gpsp/raspberrypi but I just needed to move the bios file. I guess it helps when I use my brain. It now WORKS.

There are two N64 emulators at the moment. Mupen64plus and mupen64plus-libretro. Both emulators can be installed with the current RetroPie-Setup. Every emulator has issues. Mupen64plus is hard to configure and it is impossible to disable this emulator if it is started from emulationstation. Mupen64plus-libretro should be more compatible but is even slow at 1GHz OC.
Just disable emulationstation with “F4”, update RetroPie-Setup and install one emulator with RetroPie-Setup:
Press F4
cd RetroPie-Setup
sudo git pull
sudo ./retropie_setup.sh
Select Experimental Packages
hmm, ok, i will suggest a few more things now:
1. memory split set to 256/256?
2. overclocked to the highest setting? (Turbo)
3. if those still don’t work, go into /etc/emulationstation/ and edit the file es_systems.cfg and look at the N64 block
i believe there are two different N64 emulation options in there, one is commented out, comment out the first one and then uncomment out the other, try that? :S

this is my first post on this forum.
I’ll make it quick. I installed Retropie, ran the setup script, and everything seems to work well. However, I uploaded Zelda oot and super mario 64 on my pi, and tried to start the games. The games work on my computer, with mupen64 plus.
But they don’t launch on the pi. The screen comes back to the selection of the games almost immediately.
Is it a known issue ?

Okay, i guess I’ll put my dream to bed for now. At least I’ve got a kickass emulator otherwise. I might look into building a custom computer specifically for for n64. So, before I mark this as resolved, are there any tricks of the trade that could be useful to me in the future? Also, what exactly is the scrape feature?
probably not… i wrote an enormous reply with links and large explanations and then it was lost somehow…
while its true that this is pushing the limits of the raspberry pi, there are also emulator limitation that you should be aware of… the n64 is much harder to emulate than most games
PS1 games are 32bit right? N64 is 64bit. it’s CPU is harder to emulate, it has a lot of internal components on the board that need to be emulated and it wasn’t a very well documented system for people to hack up, bootleg and emulate lol…
long story, short: most n64 emulators over the years have sacrificed compatibility/accuracy of the hardware for performance in a few select games (Mario, Zelda, Goldeneye, etc…)
Likely owing to the difficulty in emulating the complex system, most devs decided to give into the community pressure to get the most popular games working as perfectly as possible
this meant that most other games were left with extremely serious problems, including complete incompatibility, graphical glitches, soundless-ness and horrible performance. you could play many of these games on a $20000 gaming rig and they still would have the same problems
on top of this, for some reason most n64 emulators support “plugins” which drastically alters the entire thing and VASTLY INCREASES CPU/GPU REQUIREMENTS
so what i’m saying is… don’t give up… give it another… 10 or 20 years and you’ll see more improvements over the current state of things…
but hey! its better than sega saturn’s emulation state! lol…
just go for the few games on the N64 that do work well, load up a large collection of ROMs and test them all one by one like I do
Okay, so before i put the final nail in the n64 coffin, I’ve heard of combining multiple pis together for certain applications. Would this be a possible fix for the problem? I don’t know exactly how I would go about it, but it seems like if the hardware isn’t capable, adding more hardware could help.

1 – yes but just barely for only a few games that I have noticed
1.1 – mario64 actually works pretty well, I also tested an army men game that worked. maybe one of the banjo kazooie games loaded but was too slow to play really… its not the emulator, I believe its just the limitations of the Pi’s hardware
1.2 – not really… i’ve got my Pi overclocked to the max at 1000mhz, I will be trying higher settings later on but really, its probably not going to provide any noticeable difference. most games just don’t load, the ones that do are VERY LAGGY
2 – yes
2.1 – the same way you do it with other games, use the built-in scraper or add them yourself or use sselph’s scraper tool
3 – i’ve successfully used (with n64 and others) the xbox 360 wired controller and Tomee SNES-style USB controllers
Not worth messing about with N64 on the Pi, it’s very frustrating! Playstation emulation can run fairly decently though :-)
What is this “mupen64plus.cfg” that you speak of? Admittedly, I’d call it a victory if I got one N64 game to play well, or even at all.
Many of us share the same frustrations…no, the N64 emulator sucks. I have Mario 64 and Mariokart running at a barely playable level. There’s lots of things to tweak within mupen64plus.cfg, but if you change something, it might fix one game and jack up another. You’re better off using project64 on your PC for an N64 emulator.
Okay, so I decided to look into this retropie thing because it seemed like the bitchinest thing around, and admittedly, it’s pretty bitchin. The thing is though, my absolute favorite system is the N64, and while it does support N64, it won’t run the games.
So, question #1: Will it run any N64 games at all?
Question #1.1: Which, if any have you been successful with?
Question #1.2: Is there any way I can make it work better with the N64?
Question #2: Can you put thumbnails and descriptions on the games, like what Doom and Duke Nukem have?
Question #2.1: How?
Question #3: What controllers are you using? I’ve got an N64 controller with a USB adapter, but since that isn’t 100%, I’d like input on what works best.
So there’s my first bit of questions. Keep in mind, I’m pretty much a complete beginner, so go easy on me. Thanks for any help!

I just set up RetroPie on RaspBerry Pi B+. I have a Logitech F710 connected to it and while it seems to work just fine for SNES and N64, it doesn’t seem to work at all on mame.
Is there anything other than configuring retroarch.cfg to get it working with mame?

Hi everyone !
As a freshly new raspberry user and linux beginner, I need some help and I’m sure you can enlighten me.
I’ve setted up the last retropie sd-card image from petrockblock website and downloaded the good roms. After “sort of” coding, snes, nes, MD and GBA emulators worked well.
But I’ve experienced some issues with Mame, Neogeo and N64. I have the last bios in the good repositories but each time I’m launching a rom, I have a segmentation error everytime. Sometime I’ve got a black screen and when I tap Echap, it displays me the segmentation error.
Do you know this case and if yes, how to solve it ?

In the interest of not clogging the boards with unnecessary new topics I decided to post here to see if I could get some help with some mupen64plus problems.
I have gotten everything installed and running, however it seems that when I run mupen64plus through emulation station, it ignores my configuration in the ~/.config/mupen64plus/ directory and does whatever the heck it wants.
The weird thing is that if I run it straight from command line, everything is fine. The differences are pretty big too. For one thing, when running it from the command line, it has the proper resolution (1024 by 768) which on the tv I run it on, it fills the entire screen. Not only that, but the escape key will stop the emulator and everything is cool/
Now if I run it from emulation station, it runs in 640 by 480, and because of that the aspect is 4:3 and leaves two vertical black bars on either side of the screen (pillarboxed?). And the other big deal is that I can’t exit the emulator with the escape key. Also I’ve noticed there’s a bit of a performance drop when running it from emulationstation. I wonder if that has to do with ram usage or some other such resource issue.
Ideally I would like to have it work like it does from the command line: full performance, full screen, proper resolution, escape key exits back to emulationstation. Although in a perfect world I would love to exit using the L3 button on my Logitech controller as it is never used by the emulator, but as of yet I haven’t found any way of making this happen, even with mupen64plus using the proper configuration.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!
Sooo, I was messing around with the N64 emulator and its .cfg file. Exited out of ES went into raspi-config and changed GUI from 256 to 64, overclocked at ‘medium’. Rebooted and everything seemed A OKAY until after the ES loading screen. After the loading screen I get black. nada, nothing. Did I accidently happen to change a setting by accident? I was editing a file using sudo nano via SSH and my computer did crash. I restarted and continued with no faults so I don’t think there was an issue there. I can SSH to rpi to exit out when screen turns black and whatnot, the keyboard is responsive too. any help!? Thanks!!

Just added mupen64plus-libretro core to RetroPie-Setup. Because retroarch is used it is possible to exit the emulator with game pad and save/load states. The problem is you need at least 1GHz OC and there must be 384MB of ram available (set GPU men 128MB). Otherwise games will be too slow or the rpi hangs after time because low memory.
How to install:
-Close emulationstation with “F4”
-type:
cd RetroPie-Setup
sudo git pull
sudo ./retropie_setup.sh
select Experimental
select mupen64plus-libretro core
If you are brave enough start “sudo raspy-config” and set memory split and OC.

I came hear searching for a solution to a related problem.
My N64 games work fine – my ‘segmentation fault’ error appears when loading a game through the MAME emulator. This started after I acquired a USB audio card. I ran some tests on the command line and confirmed I could hear audio through it.
However as soon as I select a MAME game and it starts loading, it throws the segmentation fault error. I am 99% sure it is related to the USB audio since the game loads fine when I unplug it.
Any new ideas?
I agree with you retromarine. I installed retropie on my raspi almost exclusively so I could play some good ol’ n64 games. Super Smash Bros, Donkey Kong 64, Legend of Zelda, etc. After a couple hours figuring out how to install os and move roms, not to mention buying controller adapters specifically for n64, I went to start Super Smash Bros and nothing… Maybe Donkey Kong… Nothing. I figured maybe there’s a fix… Nothing. I guess I’ll have to download some other console games and play them, but it’s no N64 :/
Like so many others, I love the N64…which is why it’s so disheartening that Retropie doesn’t have a legit N64 emulator that actually works after the build/install. I used to use Project64 on my PC and that worked great…is there a reason that emulator isn’t the one being used on retropie? With Mupen64plus I have only been able to get Mario64 and Mariokart running decently. I’ve scoured the Internet for settings that would allow mupen to play more than a few games, but after trying them no such luck. Also…I don’t think ANYONE knows how to configure mupen64plus.cfg so that a game pad can actually exit the emulator and also use hotkeys to save/load states. I’ve tried everything! I have over 8,000 games on my retropie, yet only two of them are N64 games. It’s a damn shame.

I have the following problem. After quitting mupen64plus the resolution of the screen doesn’t not change. The result is that I only see a small part of the emulationstation screen which fits to the resolution of mupen64plus.
config.txt (720p)
hdmi_group=1
hdmi_mode=19
mupen64plus runs with default resolution settings.
Because my english is not the best i want to explain it with the following picture:

1. congrats on getting it to run at all, was there a new release of retropi that works with n64, do you have the older version, or did you fix the issue somehow?
2. i was setting retroarch+mupen64plus up on a older (~2009 intel) pc the other day it lagged a little on ssb and horribly on manjora’s mask in movie scenes, like 1fps bad
i somehow managed to get to to 100% speed, i altered a resolution setting in retroarch (was 1920×1080 set to 1024×768) i also changed a quality (accuracy) setting to low and upgraded the linux kernel to the latest 3.17 kernel, base install was ubuntu 14.04
those settings are under core options

I’ve been able to configure all emulators aside from the N64 emulator. It runs very slow. I have a B+ overclocked to 900Mhz.
I’ve tried messing around with the config files, but nothing seems to make a drastic difference. I’m using the rice video plugin. I’ve tried changing the screen update time/etc but not much difference.
Anybody have any solid updates for configuring the N64 emulator? Thanks!

It appears the info may be (at least partially) wrong.
I tried adding a single rom for a new system and my white background for SNES came back. I then managed to track down the folder with the background images (/etc/emulationstation/themes) and proceeded to compress all of them to about 1/3 their original size…
After restarting my PI the blank white screen came back… So the size of the background images doesn’t seem to have an effect on this problem…
If what I read elsewhere is correct, this is actually a memory issue.
The problem is more Rome and systems, the more memory needed by emulationstation (as it effectively hods everything in memory).
Also, if what I read is correct, updating to the newest version should help, as it’s taken the background images and compressed them better…
