One thing I can speak on is there are two N64 folders now. One of them uses the retroarch overlay and one is straight mupen64plus. The one without retroarch runs certain games that use rice video amazingly. Others not so much. I divvied up the roms that each emulator run better depending on which gfx plugin they might need. As soon as I get it figured out how to run each game with its own gfx plugin and no retroarch I’ll be golden. Only problem is with no retroarch it’s a pain to stop emulation via the controller because the code doesn’t want to work for me in the input config file.
I was just curious as to the differences between buzz’s image and the new beta; what optimizations were made that set it apart? Certain emulators seem initially more zippy, but what else is happening?
Also, what can I do to improve its performance outside of the standard overclocking and such? All I have done on my card so far is the standard raspi-config stuff, updated binaries/setup script, registered my controller, and put a few N64 roms on there to test. Can I benefit more from certain upgrades and configurations, or will I break buzz’s optimizations?
I should also mention that I have never run the installations in the setup script, as I was under the impression that it wasn’t needed when using the petrockblog images, but am I missing out on anything there? 2.3 and 2.5.0 seemed to run fine without it, as does this image.
Also thanks to everyone here that puts up with us rookies on this stuff. It’s kind of inspired me to start studying computer sciences, so I can be on the giving end of this, rather than pestering people for help. I wouldn’t even have my Pi running if it wasn’t for this forum.
What isn’t compatible? Like Floob said, with the newest 2.5.0 beta image I’ve had really good success with the Pi 2, I haven’t found any show stopping bugs

I’ve tried getting the both Zelda games to work in N64 on 2.3 (updated in all possible ways I can imagine) but haven’t managed.
neighbourhoodnerd: Weird. I didn’t notice any significant improvement for n64 emulation using the “Pi 2” overclock, that’s why I only use the “modest” one…
whywilson1 : Did you try the 2.5.0 version? I just copied/pasted the n64 configs and emulators folders on my previous microSD, and did what I mentionned above, and some games work decently (Super Smash Bros for exemple).
I feel your frustration. Finally got to play with my pi2 today and was a bit frustrated myself. Tried using my existing image and just updating it but led to inefficient config files. Started a new install and am using the n64-mupen64plus folder in the roms folder. It is isolated from retroarch which seems to be the culprit in holding these n64 roms back. It runs like a dream when not using retroarch. Only thing is having to manually put in your input settings because I can’t find an auto config for mupen right now.

I have a Pi2 and was curious about the Overclock settings.
What is the actual default setting for the RI2? Is it the max setting displayed at the bottom?
Also I haven’t had much luck getting N64 games to work. I’ve watched Floobs video on the topic a few times, made some changes here and there but most games don’t get past the start screen. Those that do play horrendously, are out of sync etc etc. I guess I’ll just wait for an update.
Any idea on whether or not there will be an update to better serve N64 and PSX games?

I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong. I don’t want to get too far offtopic, but I ran the update again – I specifically chose Mupen64Plus – and it ran for 20 hours so I knew it was updating all libs. Next morning, I had found that it installed several new emus that I had never heard of or didn’t ask for. Mupen64Plus displayed an entirely new error (of which I can’t remember) and I was shocked to find none of my other ROMs for SNES or Sega were not working either now. I had flashed my Pi before the update so I simply reverted back.
I managed to get the N64 gaming out of my system, though, because I was so frustrated that I just downloaded an emu and the ROMs onto my computer.
Hopefully the Pi2 with its increased processing power will be able to handle Mupen64Plus. This is really aggravating.
Not really sure where it says I have write access but that sudo command worked. Unfortunately I cannot view the savestate folder via Putty :( that would make managing save files easier in the future. Thank you for all the help.

Nvm, found an alternative to Filezilla in Cyberduck. Floob, you and Buzz are my heroes. All that’s left for me to do is get my N64 emulation up and running now.
Ok. Thanks to another video of Floob I finally got many games working. I used the Rice plugin, cause I can’t get some games to run with gles. However, it uses more resources… So some games are really slow.
There are two settings I used, one run almost every games (all those I tried), but it’s slow for a lot a them, and the other works better for some of those games, but doesn’t run the others…
If you set ScreenUpdateSetting to 3 in /opt/retropie/configs/n64/mupen64plus.cfg and change the plugin /opt/retropie/emulators/mupen64plus/lib/mupen64plus/mupen64plus-video-n64.so with the rice plugin which is in the same folder (just rename it mupen64plus-video-n64.so), those games will work :
– The Legend of Zelda : Ocarina of Time
– Super Smash Bros
– Mario Kart
– Super Mario
If you set it to 5 you’ll get Golden Eye to work too… But imo it’s not playable and the other games will be too slow.
I tried to overclock my pi, but it doesn’t seem to do anything, so using the “modest” setting in raspi-config is enough I think. Other than that… My memory split is set to 128 (GPU).
Still digging inside the emulator for n64, but I am not seeing any place where frame skip is “set”, not even a null command. This is a bit of a side project atm due to my new MAME woes, but I was wondering IF there was no frameskip within the configuration of the emulator, how would one add such? Would this be more of a “code from scratch” situation, or would this be more of a “add <Frameskip=X> ‘ to file “XYZ” situation?
I have been using mupen64 on an android to test the effects of frameskip (an option within mupen64), and I see this as a viable option for the pi and those who are needing that little bit more to overcome the max clock of the pi.
Got the 2.5 image running on my raspberry pi 2. It was a breeze to get up and running, so thanks for the great work! The problem I’m now having is I can’t get 2 player to work in Mario kart 64 with mupen64plus. The bottom screen is blacked out so player 2 can’t see what they’re doing.
Here’s the interesting part. The 2nd player can still control their character. For fun, I (as player 1) followed closely behind player 2 for an entire race so they could use me as a camera man and so they finished in 1st place. Then, when the next race started my (the top) screen was blacked out and theirs was now functional. We tried this scenario again with roles reversed (camera man vs lead player) and whoever came in 1st would always have the functional screen on the next race.
To me, multiplayer Mario kart 64 is the holy grail of raspberry pi game emulation, so I’m really hoping to find a workaround. I suppose I could give the libretro version another shot, but the performance was horrible on the rpi 1.
According to the below thread, ouya users were able to get around this by using a different video plugin in mupen64plus. Is there a straightforward way to change plugins in retropie? Does it require recompiling mupen?
Using bits and pieces I found on the internet I managed to mostly get two usb controllers (USB N64 controllers) working with emulator station and retroarch.
Although I have programmed both the same, I am having one issue where only in one joystick the down buttonbutton seems to triggers two events- a down and a “fire”- whereas on the other the down, only does down, and the fire is the down button on the C buttons.
Running v2.5 on RPi2 Overclocked 1ghz, won’t play N64, SNES, NES,and won’t even show PSX games even though they are in the directory. Patiently waiting, this is my first project and I knew with it being new hardware it would take a while before the software was optimized for it. I’ve posted a few videos showing what happens; they are out of focus, far away, and of poor quality. The main reason is just to show most return to the emulation station screen, but some freeze up.
Pretty much all PSX games are running great; some audio hitches here and there. This performance is out-of-the-box, no settings tweaks, overclocks or memory adjustments. I don’t doubt you’ll be able to get 100% with the right settings.
N64 emulation is a different story – understand that N64 emulation isn’t that great even on Windows with powerful PCs.
The new build comes with two emulators for N64; each which get different results depending on the game you try. I’ve tried a couple of games (Kirby, Mario) with the Retroarch N64 emulator on the Pi2, (again, stock settings) and they worked very well.
As Barryk above notes, this system (the Pi2) is brand-new and there isn’t a completed build for it yet. The current version is essentially a beta. You can wait a while if you’re not confident.
Personally I firmly recommend the Pi2. I think it’s fantastic.
With regards to the new Raspberry Pi 2 NOT being compatible with RetroPie I am curious about a few things.
@Buzz I downloaded the Img created by you Buzz and am now running RetroPie on my Raspberry Pi 2 but when a new Img comes along say V2.7 will I have to download and write that to my SD card via WinDisk? If so doesn’t that delete all of my data?
Or do I simply need to just run the apt-get update on the raspberry pi? This is driving me a little crazy because I know it will be a possible headache down the road.
Also, what ROMs haven’t been working on your IMG. So far I’ve only tried NES, SNES and N64. The first two have been okay but no N64 ROMs work at all.

How do I properly set up my controller for use with Mupen? I have set it up manually and automatically in the RetroArch config, but no matter what my N64 ROMS are not recognizing the controller input at all.
I take the update from the GUI and i see no errors.

Well I tried Jet Force Gemini on the both N64 emulators…and to no avail.
The Mugen one crashed. The other simply goes back to RetroPie. Time to try SNES.

Well SNES works…but I’m now at Roadblock #57. I can’t configure my wireless Xbox360 controller, and my wired controller doesn’t even work on any games. WTF.

You have some interesting thoughts vintagamer… I was trying to be very diplomatic in the other thread, but now I’m starting to think you’re just giving bad advice. I hope your just having an off day.
Do you have a Pi2? I do. Here’s some videos I just made.
You should be able to use a second DS4 without any problems. As I understand it, EmulationStation detects that a controller has been plugged in and checks for a config file that matches that controller’s “device id” name. That name should be the same for any number of the same type of controller.
I have been using my DS4s plugged into USB. I plan to test out bluetooth eventually, but for now I’m busy seeing which games work and playing with themes. :) If anyone has any experience with DS4s and bluetooth on RetroPie, I’d love to hear about it.
I haven’t tried to emulate N64 yet, so I’m not sure on the last one. If the N64 emulator is part of retroarch (and is playable) then the DS4 should work in theory.

I seem to have the same issue. It’s a pi2 but N64 games are really slow if i put the image in the N64 folder and don’t load at all in the n64-mupen64plus. I do set the overclock to pi2.
It is the first attempt at a retro-pi install though so possible I have done something wrong though can’t think what it could be.
The best tutorial would be to locate the retropie foundation website, find a supplier for the Raspberry Pi Model 2, order it- and then try again with image 2.5.
I’ve messed with just about every setting I could to try and get the Nintendo 64 games working on the B+ and could never come up with satisfactory results. I had to come to the realisation that the processor on the B+ just isn’t quite up to snuff for N64 emulation.
This can give you some ideas to start with though. Maybe you’ll figure something out that I didn’t.
