    So, I got my Cocktail Table built in the standard 2 player head to head style with 8 buttons on either side for game play, 1 player, 2 player, escape, and coin buttons on one side. I bought the joystick/button kit from TimeHarvest and it came with this THT Arcade Console 2P USB controller. Everything almost works. It won’t register button 7 and 8 on the 2 player side or the coin and escape buttons. I think if it was working, they would register as button 16, 17, 18, and 19 in MAME. I thought I might have a ground wire issue so I plugged it into my windows laptop and they work fine. MAME on RetroPie won’t register them at all. Any suggestions? Been searching the internet for hours to no avail. Doesn’t look like a lot of people are using these things. I attached the boards layout. Thanks for any help!

    Well in my file for my controller I have these lines here

    input_device = “USB,2-axis 8-button gamepad ”
    input_driver = “udev”
    input_b_btn = “1”
    input_y_btn = “3”
    input_select_btn = “6”
    input_start_btn = “7”
    input_up_axis = “-1”
    input_down_axis = “+1”
    input_left_axis = “-0”
    input_right_axis = “+0”
    input_a_btn = “0”
    input_x_btn = “2”
    input_l_btn = “4”
    input_r_btn = “5”

    I have a very similar problem, and hate to post up ANOTHER controller thread.

    I have my 360 controller all configured & working great (except that backwards a-b button deal). I got USB SNES & NES controllers today. Both work great in emulation station. I have configured both (independently of each other) repeatedly, in both of the ways I’ve seen instructed here. I’ve done it through the setup screen and also through the command line. No matter how I’ve attempted to set it up, the SNES & nes controllers never work at all on the nes emulator. I can plug the 360 controller back in & it still works the same.

    Please shed some light on this infuriating problem before I run this thing over with my car.

    Thanks!

    Alright I’m guessing my issue is more with how I am exiting my game then actual permissions. I guess my next question would be how are you exiting back to EmulationStation? I use a SNES Buffalo USB Gamepad controller that I setup using the RetroArch setup and start+select does not work for me as it does for others.

    I am running the newest version of RetroPi and having issues with my SNES controller plugged in via a USB adapter. When the screens prompts me to map my buttons only half of them work. I am able to map up, right, and the A/B, but not down or right.

    I tried logging in with Filezilla and creating a controller config file, but that still didnt solve the problem. What am I missing?

    Hi everyone,

    I’m running the latest version of RetroPie. I have configured an iBuffalo Classic USB Gamepad. It looks like a super nintendo controller. The setup seems to go fine, although it never asks for the X and Y buttons.

    When navigating the menus and selecting a game, the controller works fine. However once the emulator loads (both NES and Atari) the controller no longer works. I can hit any button and nothing happens.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks,

    Bryan

    hello, relatively new to this but after following a thread on this page:

    Setup of 2.3 with Xbox 360 controller

    to set up one wireless xbox 360 controller, I thought this would be the best place to get help to set up a second, I am using raspberry pi model B, retropie 2.3, a windows usb wireless controller adaptor and an xbox 360 wireless controller, i have successfully, thanks to the afore mentioned thread configured one controller to work, but i cannot seem to get a second wireless controller to work though they are both connected to the adaptor.I have searched the internet and come across forums that tell me to edit the config file…i have no idea how to access the file as windows wont read ext4 and don’t know how to edit any other way, I am pretty new to raspberry pi, and know very little, so if anyone can help me (guide me) to setting this second controller up I would be very grateful, probably be best if it was an “idiots guide” as this idiot has been trying for hours to get this working!

    thanks for any help, if anyone needs any more information in order to help feel free tell me what you need me to get/find out and if I can, I will.

    Cheers

    I came hear searching for a solution to a related problem.

    My N64 games work fine – my ‘segmentation fault’ error appears when loading a game through the MAME emulator. This started after I acquired a USB audio card. I ran some tests on the command line and confirmed I could hear audio through it.

    However as soon as I select a MAME game and it starts loading, it throws the segmentation fault error. I am 99% sure it is related to the USB audio since the game loads fine when I unplug it.

    Any new ideas?

    I created a new file /etc/udev/rules.d/99-joystick.rules:

    SUBSYSTEM == “input”, ATTRS {name} == “Nintendo Wii Remote Controller Classic”, MODE = “0666”, ENV {ID_INPUT_JOYSTICK} = “1”

    But I have always the same thing. I have to restart the udev service and even the RPI.

    Hello,

    I had my RetroPie running perfectly but was not happy with the quality of audio coming through the Pi’s audio port. A friend gave me a USB audio card to try, but it causes a “Segmentation Fault” whenever Emulation Station tries to load a game.

    I tested the card at the command line and confirmed I could hear the sound file played back.

    I have no idea where to go from here. Please help!

    Thanks,

    I followed the guide on how to install the latest version of RetroPie, got (mostly) everything set up, but have run into an error with my wireless xbox controller. It’ll randomly throw out this error while in game:
    [ERROR] USBController::on_read_data(): failed to resubmit USB transfer: LIBUSB_ERROR_NO_DEVICE

    When I get that error, the lights on the controller start blinking and I have to SSH into my Pi to run sudo xboxdrv so I can continue playing. But today, it even crashed when I did that. So, how would I go about fixing this?

    I’ve never seen that error, so not sure what it means. What BT dongle do you have? Before I bought my Asus I tried it with some super cheap one from China and it was a problem too.
    Here is a list of BT adapters (not sure how old it is…)

    Hum, right, I misspelled the path, it is /etc/udev/rules.d/ (and I named the file 99-joystick.rules), but anyway your rule is not being applied (or the command you used to check is not showing this property, are you sure about the “-a” option vs “–query=all” ?) ; you should have an output like this :

    pi@raspberrypi ~ $ sudo udevadm info --query=all --name=input/event6
    P: /devices/platform/bcm2708_usb/usb1/1-1/1-1.2/1-1.2:1.0/bluetooth/hci0/hci0:71/0005:057E:0306.0005/input/input4/event6
    N: input/event6
    E: BACKSPACE=guess
    E: DEVNAME=/dev/input/event6
    E: DEVPATH=/devices/platform/bcm2708_usb/usb1/1-1/1-1.2/1-1.2:1.0/bluetooth/hci0/hci0:71/0005:057E:0306.0005/input/input4/event6
    E: ID_INPUT=1
    E: ID_INPUT_JOYSTICK=1
    E: ID_INPUT_KEY=1
    E: MAJOR=13
    E: MINOR=70
    E: SUBSYSTEM=input
    E: UDEV_LOG=3
    E: USEC_INITIALIZED=407332809
    E: XKBLAYOUT=fr
    E: XKBMODEL=pc105

    If you still don’t have it, maybe some rights problems on the file ? Have you reloaded udev/restarted the Pi after touching the udev rules ?
    But like I said, if SDL2.0.1 is used, this will not even solve your problem, you’ll need a modified hid-wiimote module (I have a precompiled one assuming it’s still the same kernel version).

    Hello:

    As usual I’m a rookie at Raspberri pi’s proyects, and I’m having some problems with copying the bios files to the SD.

    I’ve read that you can use a USB stick to put the rom files in the SD but can i do it with the BIOS files?

    How do i do this?

    UPDATE: I’ve managed to make the exit btn work.
    All I had to do was put those lines in /opt/retropie/config/snes/*.cfg file.

    input_enable_hotkey_btn = “3”
    input_exit_emulator_btn = “2”

    It’s strange, but for some reason, my Zero Delay USB encoder reads from snes config file for ALL emulators.

    The only emulator that I can’t manage to work exit buttons is MAME-PI.

    Ok, I would say that “Joypad #1 (USB Gamepad) configured” indicates the second controller is detected, as the first one would be
    “Joypad #0 (USB Gamepad) configured”

    Watch it really carefully when it boots again and see if it shows both, as they do flash up pretty quickly. If it does show both, thats a good sign that RetroArch knows they are both there.

    Essentially the only cfg files RetroArch will use are the one in /all/ directory, which is obviously read by all the RetroArch emulator cores, and then the system specific one will be read and overwrite any previous rules. Thats why, when you are testing here, it would be good to blank out the snes specific one, so you know it is just reading the one in the /all/ directory, and you can worry about fine tuning later.

    You can see your controller config file in the “configs” directory inside the RetroArch folder, retroarch automatically loads this. I have 2 controllers exactly the same, hence its the same controller config.

    I dont have any controller settings in the console specific folders, i.e. snes, and in the /all/ directory version I have all the controller mappings commented out – except for:

    input_autodetect_enable = true
    joypad_autoconfig_dir = /opt/retropie/emulators/RetroArch/configs/

    Are you running RetroPie 2.3, as these settings were default for me.

    Hmmm.. I tried enabling the commented out option that you said, and now yellow text appears at startup saying “Joypad #1 (USB Gamepad) configured”. No mention of gamepad 2. I did notice something by watching the video, though — There are a lot of retroarch.cfg files. I’m editing the one in opt/retropie/configs/all, is that correct?

    Also, I did not previously use the controller detector like that. I actually ran it from command line. To be safe, I went ahead and ran it again — No effect. Interestingly though, when I went to map the second controller by unplugging the first controller and connecting the second controller, upon running of the setup it immediately crashed back to GUI saying that it had stored in the file “.cfg” (whereas with the first controller it saved in “USBGamepad.cfg”). It didn’t actually create a file for the second controller, I am assuming this is part of (or the source of) the problem.

    Do you think that’s the issue? Is there a way to manually create a configuration file for the second controller?

    Hi!
    I purchased 2 of these USB SNES controllers: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002JAU20W/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
    I am just trying to set up SNES to start with, and then move on to other emulators. My retroarch.cfg file looks OK, and it seems like it should be working, yet the second controller remains unresponsive (Testing it on Super Mario Kart. It’s it’s fine in emulationstation itself).

    Here’s my main configuration:

    input_player1_joypad_index = "0"
    input_player1_b_btn = "2"
    input_player1_y_btn = "3"
    input_player1_select_btn = "8"
    input_player1_start_btn = "9"
    input_player1_up_axis = "-1"
    input_player1_down_axis = "+1"
    input_player1_left_axis = "-0"
    input_player1_right_axis = "+0"
    input_player1_a_btn = "1"
    input_player1_x_btn = "0"
    input_player1_l_btn = "4"
    input_player1_r_btn = "5"

    input_enable_hotkey_btn = 8
    input_exit_emulator_btn = 9
    input_menu_toggle_btn = 5

    input_player2_joypad_index = "0"
    input_player2_b_btn = "2"
    input_player2_y_btn = "3"
    input_player2_select_btn = "8"
    input_player2_start_btn = "9"
    input_player2_up_axis = "-1"
    input_player2_down_axis = "+1"
    input_player2_left_axis = "-0"
    input_player2_right_axis = "+0"
    input_player2_a_btn = "1"
    input_player2_x_btn = "0"
    input_player2_l_btn = "4"
    input_player2_r_btn = "5"

    Here’s my SNES specific configuration:

    input_menu_toggle_btn = 5

    input_enable_hotkey_btn = 8
    input_exit_emulator_btn = 9

    input_player1_a_btn = 1
    input_player1_b_btn = 2
    input_player1_y_btn = 3
    input_player1_x_btn = 0
    input_player1_start_btn = 9
    input_player1_select_btn = 8
    input_player1_l_btn = 4
    input_player1_r_btn = 5
    input_player1_left_axis = -0
    input_player1_right_axis = +0
    input_player1_up_axis = -1
    input_player1_down_axis = +1

    input_player2_a_btn = 1
    input_player2_b_btn = 2
    input_player2_y_btn = 3
    input_player2_x_btn = 0
    input_player2_start_btn = 9
    input_player2_select_btn = 8
    input_player2_l_btn = 4
    input_player2_r_btn = 5
    input_player2_left_axis = -0
    input_player2_right_axis = +0
    input_player2_up_axis = -1
    input_player2_down_axis = +1

    The controller isn’t defective, because it works fine when it’s the only one plugged in. It just never seems to work with both plugged in.

    Any help?
    Thanks!

    Hi, I am rebuilding an old midway cocktail cabinet. I have an IPAC Ultimate keyboard emulator AND 2 ps3 controllers for a total of 4 players. What I would like to do, is add another instance of MAME to Emulationstation, with it’s own retroarch.cfg file, which contains “force screen rotation=1” and it’s own theme (just the same MAME theme, but with the SFV file edited to say something like “MAME Cocktail”). I have all of the controls working, but I cannot add the extra emulator. What I’ve done so far, is to install another copy of mame, which I put into /opt/retropie/emulators/MAMEFLIP/, I also added a folder in /opt/retropie/emulators/cfg/mameflip. I then copied the lines defining the MAME emulator system in es_system.cfg. I changed the path to it’s own rom folder /mnt/usbhdd/roms/mameflip (to specifically hold roms for cocktail flip). I changed the executable path to match where the second instance of mame is (/opt/retropie/emulators/MAMEFLIP). I also copied /etc/emulationstation/mame to /etc/emulationstation/mameflip.

    Ideally what I’m trying to accomplish is:
    Having in the main emulationstation menu, an instance of MAME4ALL-PI which points to a retroarch.cfg file that keeps the screen oriented the way it is, and utilizes the ps3 controls.
    Having a second instance of MAME on the main emulationstation menu (preferably with an altered graphic that said “MAME Cocktail” or something, but I understand that SFV files cannot be edited in this way) that points to it’s own romset and it’s own retroarch.cfg file that rotates the screen 90 degrees, and utilizes the joysticks as controllers.
    So I guess my question is, how do I add another MAME emulator, with it’s own menu graphics, and romset, etc.
    If there’s anyone with a better way to accomplish this goal without adding another instance of MAME, like possibly how to program MAME to flip an individual game 90 degrees when it’s loaded?

    Thanks for any help you can give me.

    Has anyone run retropie with a secondary display? I’m thinking about using a picolcd 40×4 LCD over USB to display game information while I’m playing the games. It also has buttons, so I’m considering it for other uses, too.

    Am I the first to try something like this?

    I am very new with all this and still have some issues, but my PS3 cont. works via bluetooth. After spending so much time looking up guides (that were focused on the old RetroPie) a just used the automatic PS3 setup in R.Pie config option.
    cd RetroPie-Setup/
    sudo ./retropie_setup.sh
    You pair it while USB connected and it works fine. I am still having some issues with it for certain emulators, but it works.
    BTW, my BT dongle is from Asus, not the cheap crap, so that might help.

    Hi everybody I am new to all things RetroPie and RP but im working It out slowly. Here is the situation I have built my own USB NES controller out of an old NES controller and the PCB from an old USB keyboard…. Basically I traced out the traces on the keyboard and then soldered the corresponding contacts to the buttons on a NES controller PCB so when you press a on the controller you are pressing a on the keyboard It works flawlessly in all matters of functionality however I cannot figure out how to setup a button press combination to exit the emulator I have tried adding the following to the retroarch.cfg but no luck so far

    #input_enable_hotkey_btn = d
    #input_exit_emulator_btn = kp_enter
    (select button is mapped to “d” and start is mapped to kp_enter)
    I think it may be an issue with the default keyboard settings but basically what I want is to hold select(d) and press start(kp_enter) and exit the emulator…. any help would be great.

    Hello, dear people from the RetroPie-Project.
    I’m running into a problem, when I try to run GB or GBC games.
    To be precise, the following occurs:

    root@raspberrypi:/opt/retropie/emulators/RetroArch/installdir/bin# ./retroarch -L ../../../../emulatorcores/gambatte-libretro/libgambatte/gambatte_libretro.so ../../../../../../home/pi/RetroPie/roms/gb/Tetris.gb
    Plain ROM loaded.
    cgb: 0
    rambanks: 0
    rombanks: 0
    retroarch: src/mem/cartridge.cpp:95: gambatte::Cartridgetype gambatte::cartridge Type(unsigned int): Assertion [Here would be a grave accent, but that would break the code-tag.]
    headerByte0x147 < sizeof(typeLut)' failed.
    Aborted

    I’ve tried to reinstall RetroPie with the All-in-one-image multiple times and updated it but nothing seems to help. Why does this error occur and how can I fix it? :(
    SNES, NES and GBA are working fine, btw.
    Please answer me if you need additional information from me, regarding this problem.

    And I’m having another little problem. I’m using a cheap USB SNES-Controller and want to reset back to Emulationstation like I used to on a real SNES, via the Button combo L+R+START+SELECT. Is there any way to achieve this, or will RetroPie only allow for a two-button combo (like START+SELECT)?

    Thanks in advance for your help! :)

    Hello, extreme Linux noob here. I recently got a usb controller working for all my emulators on Retropie, but I would like to change the configuration to be different for 2 roms in psx. Is there any way to do this?

    Hi all,

    Got Retropie working today, and the few ROMs I’ve tried work great.

    HOWEVER, the snes emulator is acting as though the pad I have plugged in is in the p2 slot!

    I only have one thing connected via usb (the pad), and that pad works fine in the menus and in the GBA emulator too – what am I doing wrong?

    I am looking to do a setup from source, I am aware of the extremely long periods of time it would require the Pi to be on and connected to the net and left alone.

    What options should I select to obtain the following:
    All Nintendo and Sega systems along with Atari 2600, Intellivision, PC Engine (Turbo Grafx 16), Playstation 1.
    As well as all of the Arcade/Neo Geo/Final Burn/MAME stuff.

    I’m asking because a lot of the options appear to be duplicates of some systems and I don’t want IBM/AppleII/Ports to show up in the menu either. The other reason I’m asking is because this process takes forever and I would rather not want to repeat it so many times.

    I only plan to use generic USB controllers with this system too. Is this option that I should pick in the setup menu, basically excluding some others?

    At 4:40 in the video the path is:
    /opt/retropie/emulators/RetroArch/configs

    Do an ‘ls’ in that directory, then you should see the USBGamepad.cfg file which you can edit.

    the same as this guy, “configuration file has been saved as USBGamepad.cfg ..etc”
    and on the top appear a tiny words in light blue : “Raspberry Pi setup […] Installation folder : /otp/retropie for user pi ”

    hello i was able to get the alternative kernel method working with retrolink to usb. followed this https://www.petrockblock.com/forums/topic/retrobit-usb-genesis-adapter-driver-install/#post-81793

    but now I face the problem with adding 2nd player support..
    player 1 works fine
    player 2 doesnt.

    sudo nano /opt/retropie/configs/all/retroarch.cfg

    input_player1_a = x
    input_player1_b = z
    input_player1_y = a
    input_player1_x = s
    input_player1_start = enter
    input_player1_select = rshift
    input_player1_l = q
    input_player1_r = w
    input_player1_left = left
    input_player1_right = right
    input_player1_up = up
    input_player1_down = down

    (i added this entry below into my retroarch.cfg file)
    at a loss on how to fix this.

    input_player2_a = x
    input_player2_b = z
    input_player2_y = a
    input_player2_x = s
    input_player2_start = enter
    input_player2_select = rshift
    input_player2_l = q
    input_player2_r = w
    input_player2_left = left
    input_player2_right = right
    input_player2_up = up
    input_player2_down = down

    Does the retroarch USB process in the video complete as shown?
    In the video at 03:28 it confirms what the filename is – what does yours say?
