Hmm, i followed you guide to the letter and when i remove the usb cable from the pad and press the PS button on the pad the pad vibrates and all 4 lights flash and then the lights stop flashing and stops vibrating and doesnt connect!. Any ideas?

EDIT: I have a Cambridge Silicon Radio, Ltd Bluetooth Dongle (HCI mode) btw. The ones that are black and have the small semi-circle design.

Hi,

I am new to RetroPie and enjoying it so far. My setup is working well, including virtual gamepads, which are quite convenient.

I am getting a blank screen and a crash when I try to load Zelda: Link to the Past. I have tried multiple ROMs from multiple sources.

I do see it list the connected controllers, but then it crashes. If I load it from a zip file, the sfc does show up via Samba afterwards. I have also tried loading it uncompressed.

Here’s my log:

PPU.RenderSub = 0
PPU.FullClipping = 1
Settings.Transparency = 1
Settings.SpeedhackGameID = 0
PPU.SFXSpeedupHack = 0
coldata_update_screen = 1

Here’s my info:
Pi Model: 2B
RetroPie Version Used: 3
Built From: SD Image
USB Devices connected: one controller (NYKO AirFlow)
Controller used:USB udev controller and virtual gamepad

Thanks for any help!

Hey Guys,

Has anyone been able to get Mario Paint for SNES to work with a USB mouse? My fiance loves that game but when we tried it last night it didn’t work. I didn’t have time to go through retroarch.cfg at the time and figured I’d ask while I’m at work away from my pi.

Thanks!

I think your solution is found in the setup guide for the NES30 controllers:
http://forum.8bitdo.com/thread-328-1-1.html

I had the same problem, till I followed the setup to the letter. You need to configure the controller twice. Once for the dpad first, then a second time for the remaining keys.

<quote>
reboot your raspberry pi

While loading hold start on your controller to turn it back on

your blue light should go solid when you get into emulation station

it should ask to setup a controller. ( if not use the a usb keyboard hit enter to open the options and config controller)

Hold down on the Dpad (it should say keyboard)

Only set UP, DOWN, LEFT, RIGHT

Skip A, B, START, SELECT, LEFT BUMPER, RIGHT BUMPER

then hit ok

Now reopen the controller config and hold A (should say 8Bitdo NES30 GamePad)

skip UP,DOWN, LEFT, RIGHT ( you should be able to use your down arrow on your Dpad to skip them)

Set A, B, START, SELECT, LEFT BUMPER, RIGHT BUMPER

then hit ok and you should have a working controller.
</quote>

I’ve just got “configs” and “roms”

edit: “cd RetroPie/BIOS” exists, but there’s no bios folder on the usb when I take it out

How do I add the BIOS to the folder using a USB?

Anonymous

I put a ROM into the /gba folder and it shows up, but when entering the ROM, it looks like it’s about to run, then it goes back to emulation station.

For reference, I put my ROM in via USB.

I’m guessing it has something to do with “req sound [basic.launch]”, but I’m not sure as to what that is.

Hi Folks,

I’m running the latest Retropie V3.0 (not RC1 or beta4) on a Pi2.
For my N64 I use a retrolink USB Clone, which is noticed as a “GenericUSBJoystick” – so after setting it up I have:

/opt/retropie/configs/all/retroarch-joypads/GenericUSBJoystick.cfg

input_device = "Generic   USB  Joystick  "
input_driver = "udev"
input_a_btn = "6"
input_b_btn = "8"
input_l_btn = "4"
input_r_btn = "5"
input_l2_btn = "7"
input_start_btn = "9"
input_down_btn = "h0down"
input_up_btn = "h0up"
input_left_btn = "h0left"
input_right_btn = "h0right"
input_l_x_plus_axis = "+0"
input_l_y_plus_axis = "+1"
input_l_y_minus_axis = "-1"
input_l_x_minus_axis = "-0"
input_r_y_plus_btn = "2"
input_r_x_minus_btn = "3"
input_r_y_minus_btn = "0"
input_r_x_plus_btn = "1"
input_enable_hotkey_btn = "7"
input_exit_emulator_btn = "9"
input_reset_btn = "8"
input_load_state_btn = "4"
input_save_state_btn = "5"
input_state_slot_increase_btn = "h0right"
input_state_slot_decrease_btn = "h0left"
input_menu_toggle_btn = "0"

So my hotkey-Button is “Z” – that’s the button on the back and all the “hotkey-functions” are working great, for example Exit Emulator, save oder load a slot, etc. BUT The funktion of the Button Z won’t have any effect in the gameplay until I uncomment it and reload the emulator.

#input_enable_hotkey_btn = "7"

So either key “7” is working in the gameplay or it has its function as a hotkey_enable but both at the same time seems not working. I got the same behaviour when I use some other button on the pad.

Any suggestions ?
All other systems like NES or SNES works just fine.

Thank you for you help

1) How do i burn the retropie image to my HDD/USB? Through Win32 Disk imager?

2) Is there any sd-card corruption prevention with this method? Thus meaning we can overclock the pi?

3) Where do we “add” games? In sd card or in usb?

Thanks

Is there any way to configure the order of the configured controllers? I have a Logitech F710 and a Logitech USB XBOX controller. They both work great, but no matter what ports the receivers are physically connected to, the XBOX controller is always treated as Player 1. I would like the F710 to be Player 1.

What I would like to know about your build is how you judge the ergonomics, with the screen fully vertical like that. Also, are your hands not in the way of the screen?
I mean, it would be depending on the angle. If it was level with my head then yes, but most of them time it could even be on my desk and I can play it fine. I keep my hands usually pretty down.
I would consider some kind of storage space to hold additional controllers /keyboards, at least, that’s what I am planning.
All I would have to store is a tiny wireless keyboard I use for it (here) and a tiny USB SNES Controller. I seem to have enough space.
What kind of suggestions / feedback do you want?
Nothing in particular, I am just looking to improve it in any way.

Sorry if this was covered before. I just set up my Pi 2 to run Retropie 3.0. I have 2 wireless Xbox360 controllers.

Will one of these dongles work? Or should I buy the official one.

Now found:
my controller “USB Gamepad ” was not listed in
config\n64\InputAutoCfg.ini
File modified => block [USB,2-axis 8-button gamepad] copied and renamed to “USB Gamepad “.
Now it works perfect.
Hope, this could help someone….

Try playing a game, then choosing the shut down option from the Emulation Station menu as opposed to pulling the plug.
Is your gamelist.xml on the USB as well?

First sucess:
I have here:
\configs\n64\mupen64pls.cfg
changed the audio OUTPUT_PORT
and that works :-) Now I cand here sound effects.
But if I change the Input-SDL-Control1
settings it does not have an influence.
After reboot the settings are reverted to key(..).
Have enywhere a hint for me what I should do that my both USB-gamepads works?
(in other emulator, e. g. fds, nes controller works well).
I would like to play that game with my daughter…..

I’ve noticed that the counters in ES are not saving after I shutdown. I mainly noticed this when I was showing off my system and the person wanted to know what game I played the most… but all were played 0 times.

Anyone know what I should check to get this working correctly?

I run all my games off of a USB stick, if that helps troubleshooting at all.

Thanks!

Floob – great video. I’m a complete newbie but have gotten my raspberry pi set up and working due to your videos (and so many others posting on the forums). I added a PS3 controlled to an already working Nintendo USB and it works on everything but mame4all, which is what I really want it for. When the PS3 controller is connected, my keyboard won’t work in mame4all either, to hit Tab and map the joystick, but when I pull the bluetooth out, it does again. Have you tested the PS3 wireless with mame4all? Cheers!

It will contain basically everything but actual tmolding (it will have the slots), Rpi/Pc, Monitor, Power supply. If you check the link you will see you can add joysticks, buttons, etc. I talked with my CNC guy about USB on the outside of the cabinet, but for now that will need to be a modification people do when they receive it as that is too customized for a large run. USB hubs come in different sizes, etc.

Based on feedback from other forums, I am going to change the button layout to a curved instead of street fighter and put the player buttons on the control panel.

Thank you for the feedback!

Looks really cool!
A Couple of questions,
Will it be the case as a kit, a kit with the buttons and sticks, or a all in one with the pi?

Will there be access to USB ports somewhere w/o having to go into the case, same with ethernet.

As an aside, have you ever done a cocktail pi case?

I just use a 64gb sandisk ultra SD card and it is enough for my needs. Other people will run games off a USB stick or the network. I find it easiest just to keep everything on the SD card. As far as card readers go – you can get them anywhere, most will work. When you create the SD image it creates the boot portion with your OS but also has space for ROMs after you expand the filesystem with sudo raspi-config

Hello,
I hope somebody can help me.
I use Raspberry Pi 2 B with retropi V3.
I wot like to play Mario Kart with N64.
Now I know if I push a button after start emulator I can choose an emulator.
If I use lr-mupen64plus fonts are not readable, but my USB controller and audio works well.
If I usa another emulator (mupen64plus-gles2n64) fonts are fine, but my controller and audio don’t work :-(
I tried some changes in \configs\n64\mupen64pls.cfg but it didn’t has an influence. The file looks after rebooting if it was before.
Can you help me please? What should I do that mupen64plus-gles2n64 audio and my both USB gamepads are working?

(Had this posted in the Getting Started forum but realized it might be more appropriate here).

So, I have Retropie 3.0 running on a Raspberry Pi 2. My wife bought me two 8BitDo NES30 controllers for my birthday last week so we can play together. We want to utilize the controllers’ bluetooth capabilities because our couch is some distance from our TV, too long to use with the USB cables comfortably, and I want to put the Pi on the back of the TV with some velcro dots or 3M Command strips so it’s out of sight when not in use.

I am at my wit’s end trying to get the controllers set up. There is no shortage of articles and forum threads about this topic, and I have read every one I can find, and none of them bring me any closer to success. Most of them are at least several months old and all seem to differ in the configuration options described compared to what I see on my Pi.

This was the most promising looking tutorial I found: http://forum.8bitdo.com/thread-328-1-1.html Until I get to the step requiring “317 Register RetroArch Controller,” which seems to no longer exist in RetroPie Setup (317 is now something completely different). Nevertheless I managed to get one controller connected using this tutorial in gamepad mode, but then only the D-pad is recognized in the EmulationStation configuration and none of the buttons, or I got it connected in keyboard mode with Start+B but then only the buttons are recognized and not the D-pad. Then for no apparent reason it stopped connecting at all, which brings me to where I am now, which is the point where I throw up my hands and accept that I have to ask for some help.

All I want is:

1: To be able to connect both of my NES30 gamepads to my Pi so my wife and I can play together.

2: For both controllers to auto-connect when I press the appropriate button or buttons (Start, Start+B, Start+B+R, whatever, as long as it’s reliable)

3: To not have to muck around with the console ever again once I complete the initial setup of the two controllers.

Is this possible? It must be. It doesn’t seem like I’m asking for that much.

I’m sorry for the long-winded, ranty post but I just wanted to make it clear I’ve read I’m not asking for help before trying my level best to get this done on my own. Is there anybody here who has achieved the three goals above and done it recently who would be so kind as to give me a detailed rundown of the steps they took? I would be forever grateful, and my wife would be more so since it would save her birthday present to me from being a bit of a bust.

I have this JBtek Bluetooth adapter: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00L08NCPQ?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00 Both of my controllers are updated to the latest firmware.

the port can be installed from the experimental menu of the setup script. It’s not quite stable yet (in the sense that it doesn’t quite fit our file format- it plays just fine) I’m also looking into replacing it with a netplay build once its finished development.

As far as your hotkeys not working- they should have just been configured automatically when you boot up the first time (when you configured your controller for the first time) this is all assuming that you built it from a fresh image.

once you’ve configured your controller for the first time it will create a config here: /opt/retropie/configs/all/retroarch-joypads

post the results of the .cfg file in the above folder and maybe I can help you sort it out.

Just for reference- This is what Mine looks like:

input_device = "USB gamepad           "
input_driver = "udev"
input_r_btn = "5"
input_save_state_btn = "5"
input_start_btn = "9"
input_exit_emulator_btn = "9"
input_l_btn = "4"
input_load_state_btn = "4"
input_up_axis = "-1"
input_a_btn = "1"
input_b_btn = "2"
input_reset_btn = "2"
input_down_axis = "+1"
input_right_axis = "+0"
input_state_slot_increase_axis = "+0"
input_x_btn = "0"
input_menu_toggle_btn = "0"
input_select_btn = "8"
input_enable_hotkey_btn = "8"
input_y_btn = "3"
input_left_axis = "-0"
input_state_slot_decrease_axis = "-0"

Edit: should have mentioned I have this JBtek Bluetooth adapter: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00L08NCPQ?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00
I’ve been playing with this setup/configuration for a few days and I wanted to share my experience thus far.

– FIRST: HUGE thanks to smithers for laying out a “packaged” groundwork for this. Not only does it take time to understand how to use NOOBS, creating the images, but the Skinning of both OpenELEC and integration with Retropie is also time consuming. That said, smithers has provided the basis for anyone to take this model and adjust it to their needs.

For example: I’ve created my own images of OpenELEC and Retropie for backup purposes using NOOBS. As smithers mentioned, this is quite powerful because it allows you to restore to essentially any SDCARD (provided it meets the minimum space needed) without running into sizing issues (not all 16GB cards are the same size for example) as you would with a typical block-type backup/restore using Win32Imager. Also this method allows you to easily restore/install to a larger size SDCARD (and potentially a smaller one )

That was my intentions entirely with the usb build yes so I am glad you have jumped onto it! It is really the icing on the cake for me and was worth the many hours of investigating and compiling the build! Hopefully it will inspire others to create other dual or perhaps triple boot custom builds as you have all you need to do it at your fingertips.

Thanks for writing up a guide. I personally do all my work on a dedicated Linux laptop (Linux Mint Cinnamon 64) and would highly recommend others to install it too. It will even set up a dual boot function if you already have windows installed!
Hi all, me again :\ lol

I’m at my wits end lol, I have downloaded and installed all versions of this and I have no joy whatsoever with psx games. I am able to get them to appear (via usb) in a untouched version of retropie but any of smithers versions I cant get it to work. I have followed many guides and even tried using the vanilla version. All in all I am trying to run all my roms off SD internally except psx and sega CD which I want to run off usb externally.

Below is my path for the psx and I cant see where I’m going wrong. please tell me it is simple, because once I have this done I will be able to enjoy my retropie and then continue work on my bartop project :)

Hi.

Firstly – what file extension are your roms using? Maybe they are an unaccepted extension such as .zip, .ecm or .7z? Sorry if that’s an obvious question, but best to ask!

I don’t use usb storage personally but could give it a test if you’re still stuck? One thing I will say though – are you sure that /media/usb0 is correct? I may be thinking of something different and can’t test right now but should it not be something like /dev/sda or /dev/sdb? Let me find out – I could be totally wrong!!

Edit – worth mentioning that Linux is cAsE sensitive, so if your play station folders on usb stick is /PSX but your path in es_systems.cfg is /psx then it won’t find it. Sorry if you already knew this!

Edit 2 – so I was right with the /dev/sda (or similar) remark, but I forgot about the important step of mounting the usb drive. I assume you have a script in place that mounts your usb stick on boot? Based on your es_systems.cfg I would guess the script was something like:

sudo mount /dev/sda1 /media/usb0

Is that right?

Hello. First let me apologize if this issue has been covered. I was unable to locate a satisfactory answer to my question, but I realize that doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. I’ve been tinkering with RetroPie for a few months now. I have created RetroPie consoles from 1st and 2nd generation Pi boards. The issue I’m having as far as controller configuration on my Pi2 is a bit of a head scratcher though. For my first gen board, I just used a pair of SNES imitation pads which connected via USB and they worked without issue. However, since the Pi2 is more powerful, emulation of 3D capable systems is far more practical, and I therefor opted to use the Logitech F310 pads which have joysticks and the same amount of buttons as a PSX controller. The issue is when I go to program the buttons in the EmulationStation GUI, it doesn’t correctly recognize the analog triggers. It seems to interpret pressing the trigger and releasing the trigger as separate button presses, so I therefor cannot complete the configuration of the controllers correctly. When I use the RetroPie-Setup script, the button order turns out wrong when I launch a game in EmulationStation. For example when I use the PSX emulator, the button mappings don’t match the layout of an actual PSX pad. I did find that the Logitech Dual Action pad (basically a previous version of the F310) works great, but they are nolonger manufactured and typically go for ridiculous prices new. I’m hoping there is a quick and easy solution to this problem but any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks for any assistance you can offer.

Alrighty, so here’s how this goes. I SSH into my Pi to edit the /opt/retropie/all/retroarch.cfg file, and I set it to what I want all my keys mapped to. The problem? It saves, but when I restart my Pi, the emulators ignore it. I’ve tried the in-game control configuration for GPSP, but it never saves, either. I’m using a standard USB keyboard, which will soon be replaced by GPIO Input, I have RetroPie 3.0, and I’m using my main game hub as a Raspberry Pi A+ but doing setup on my B+. Any help would be appreciated!

Also this method allows you to easily restore/install to a larger size SDCARD (and potentially a smaller one too).

Anyway along the way, I’m sharing these tidbits for anyone looking to do the same (requires some technical knowledge and familiarity with linux).

BOOT into OPENELEC
==================
SSH in

mount -o remount,rw /var/media/Media (Mounts the USB stick as writeable)

(Create boot image)
cd /flash
tar -cvpf /var/media/Media/OpenELEC_RPi2_System.tar .

(Create storage image)
cd /storage
tar -cvpf /var/media/Media/OpenELEC_RPi2_Storage.tar .

BOOT up Retropie
================
SSH in

(Create boot image)
cd /boot
tar -cvpf ~/BOOT.tar . –exclude=’System Volume Information’

(Create storage image)
cd /
sudo tar -cvpf ~/retropie.tar . –exclude=proc/ –exclude=sys/ –exclude=dev/pts/ –exclude=home/pi/BOOT.tar –exclude=home/pi/retropie.tar

(this will include the ROMS folder)

THEN

xz -9 -e <label>.tar all the TAR files! I had to do this off the pi because of memory constraints.

THEN

With all your tar.xz files created, you can use smithers download as a starting point to easily replace those images (.tar.xz) with ones you have created.

Don’t forget to edit the NOOBS partitions.json is the respective “os” folders to adjust nominal size of partition and size of the tar file uncompressed. This command is helpful to determine the uncompressed size of a .tar.xz file: sudo xz -l root.tar.xz

Hi guys!

Im soon to pull my hair in pure space madness :)

I have a clean setup running v.3 with aim to emulate mame and fba
Im trying to configure this 2 player joystick (generic usb) with 6 “action” buttons and 2 “top” buttons.

In Mame all is ok since it has it´s own config/interface

Fba on the other hand…

jstest js0 and js1 shows

Driver version is 2.1.0.
Joystick (Generic USB Joystick ) has 6 axes (X, Y, Z, Rz, Hat0X, Hat0Y)
and 12 buttons (Trigger, ThumbBtn, ThumbBtn2, TopBtn, TopBtn2, PinkieBtn, BaseBtn, BaseBtn2, BaseBtn3, BaseBtn4, BaseBtn5, BaseBtn6).
Testing … (interrupt to exit)
Axes: 0:-32767(left) and 32767(right) 1:-32767(up) and 32767(down)
Buttons: 0:on 1:on 2:on 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off 7:off 8:on 9:on 10:off 11:off

I want 0-5 as “action btn´s” and 8-9 as 1 Player and “insert coin”

Then my thought was to have BTN 0 on player1 side + BTN 5 on player2 side as “exit emulator” hotkey

How should my CFG look like? :) I have tried so many variants and nothing works. Im not even shure that the Fba reads my cfg attempts!?!

I have read so many guides (guess i´m stupid) and still don´t get it…

In what config do i need to to put the joystick information?

I thought i should put it in the retroarch.cfg within the fba folder? i tried that but nothing works in the emu.

Is there anybody out there who could help me out?

Looks like this

Hello everyone!

I am using Retropie / Emulationstation 2.6. It appears that the ROM service will copy over the folders for the emulators onto my SD card, but when I put ROMs on it and plug it into my Pi, the program ignores I even put ROMs on there! I’ve tried changing the file paths to my USB stick, but I don’t want to have to have a giant stick outside of my Pi just to play games, as my Pi is set up as a handheld.

Also, GBA ROMs do not seem to work…I get an error whilst trying to run games:
/opt/retropie/supplementary/runcommand/runcommand.sh: line 286: SYS: Command not found

And then it takes me back to EmulationStation…any help would be great!

Cheers!

Hi there.

I’m new to this forum, so I start by saying hi! I hope someone can help me, because I’m stuck.

Pi Model: B rev 2
RetroPie Version Used: 2.6.0
From: SD Image
Devices connected: Arcade controller + USB keyboard
Controller used: JUYAO
Error messages received: No error message, but only one controller is recognized.
Guide used: Did not find any guides on this particular problem
File: No
Attachment of config files: Tell me if you need anything in particular
How to replicate the problem: ??

I have bought a JUYAO arcade controller for connection of 2 arcade joysticks + buttons to the Raspberry Pi. However, the raspberry does not seem to recognize the control board.

I have done the following:
I have created a file /etc/udev/rules.d/00-arcadejs.rules
Where I’ve put the following:
ATTRS{name}=="Arcade Controller JUYAO Dual Arcade",ACTION=="add",ENV{ID_INPUT_TABLET}="0",ENV{ID_INPUT_JOYSTICK}:="1"

In this way the Raspberry is recognizing one of the two controllers at least, and I can get it to work with the RetroPi. But only one controller, not two.

I cannot manage to configure the second controller.

If I plug the controller into my computer (Win) it sees two joysticks and double sets of buttons, so I think the connections are correct.

Does anyone have any ideas on this? Is there anything I can change in the 00-arcadejs.rules file in order to add another controller?

Thanks in advance

Ok So I have looked everywhere and tried heaps of things and can’t get it to work. All AI want to do is configure my USB controller to exit the game when I hold down select and start.
So many tutorials do not work for me in the slightest, I just get errors or have no idea what the person is talking about.

I am not using Wifi on my Raspberry Pie B. I do not have Linux or anyway of connecting it to my main computer besides taking out the microsd card. Most tutorials say “Now using Wifi…” or “Now time to use SSH” (no idea what that is).

So can someone please tell me the commands I need to enter exactly? I have managed to configure the basic controls.
Btw, by exactly I mean saying 4 or “4” is two different terms to me.
All I am using my Retro pie for is to play oldschool games. I just want to be able to Exit the games on the controller without needing to unplug my keyboard (which is a hassle)

Hi,

I’m looking for someone to set up a SD card with retropie for me.

I’m NOT looking for any ROMS. Just retropie configed and setup as I need.

I’m using a Xin Mo arcade to USB encoder, 2 PS3 controllers and a wireless keyboard.

Happy to pay for your work with PayPal. You would need to have the PS contollers.

If you are interested please send me a msg.

Thank you! =)
