I really like the idea of configuring input at start :)

Just a question though: From what i know this works for all Retroarch emulators – except for pifba (needs fba2x.cfg file to be manually edited) and mame emulator.

Assuming my controller’s file is USB_controller.cfg (created at start up) can this be linked with a fba2x.cfg file which will be auto generated in the right path?? fba2x.cfg typical needs these values:

[Joystick]
A_1=
B_1=
X_1=
Y_1=
L_1=
R_1=
START_1=
SELECT_1=
LEFT_1=
RIGHT_1=
UP_1=
DOWN_1=

All these values can be auto-imported from the USB_controller.cfg (or whatever the name is) right?

It is only a thought about this..

p.s I dont know if smth similar can be done for mame controls..

Ok, I have tested the dongle in other ubuntu machines and it pairs just fine with other Bluetooth items. So now I know that I have a generic and official sony controller, a bluetooth that is working, a usb cable that works perfectly when plugged in, and a retroarch configured control working for both controllers when plugged in. But I still cannot get the controllers to lock to the bluetooth during the sixpair step (although the sony controller buzzes) as no js_ appears in the input test step.
Could my sixpair files be junk? What is the best way to uninstall and reinstall? I saw one post on here that showed a Make step, but I was very confused reading it, and I consider myself pretty good at terminal commands.

Hi all.

Here is a ‘Vanilla’ build of RetroPie / OSMC:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/swgen48306ko3v1/RetroPie_OSMC_Vanilla_DualBoot_v1_SS.zip?dl=0

Both OS’s are standard in every way other than my scripts to switch between OS’s. OSMC will prompt you with its normal ‘First Setup’ steps after install and RetroPie will ask for controller setup as normal. I have not modified either system in any other way so they will act and perform as the standard builds would.

This build allows installing via the normal SD card method OR using a USB stick to store the OS’s on. If you use the USB stick method then you will only lose around 125MB to install files, whereas using the normal SD card method you will lose around 800MB. I recommend using USB!

Full instructions in the normal ‘README’ file. I’ve tested it a few times and it works great but please let me know how you get on!

I will look into RasPlex next as a ‘Vanilla’ build then work on ‘full’ builds for both, which should allow time for RetroPie v3 final to arrive! :)

As for the OpenELEC build – I’m not sure what to do for the best. I like the stability of KODI v14 but if that has SD card corruption issues then I don’t want to package it up and release it for fear of creating problems for folk. As for the v15 release candidate – it seems to me like it has some bugs that cause it to crash quite a bit. I think I would rather wait for v15 final than use any other Betas, but not sure when that will be. :/

Anyway – Hope this helps someone. I’ve never used OSMC before but some people seem to prefer it so here it is.

All the best.
Steve

p.s. I forgot to mention, I have created a separate ‘OSMC’ theme, instead of using the normal KODI theme. So that is another change to the RetroPie build, but nothing major. Let me know what you think of the theme!

Well I had things working with a wired PS3 controller on my Raspberry Pi 2 Model B running Retropie 3.0, but that wasn’t good enough for me. I should have left it alone but I wanted to run wireless. So I plugged in an Asus USB-BT400 I had lying around and followed a setup video I found on youtube and I had the controller paired in a few minutes. The buttons were all mapped and then I fired up emulation station. I was able to set up the controller wirelessly there and things looked to be running great.

I fired up a game in mame4all and none of the buttons worked. No problem, I pressed tab to get into the general inputs menu and tried to map the buttons there. None of the ps3 controllers buttons were being registered.

I did a search on this problem and came up with this:
https://github.com/RetroPie/RetroPie-Setup/wiki/Setting-Up-a-PS3-controller-for-mame4all-pi

This is for the Retropie version 2.3, and as such things aren’t exactly in the same folders.

My question is: do I still have to follow these steps or is there something obvious that I have missed?

Thanks in advance!

Cheers,
K-bert

Ok so now that I have had time to play with OpenELEC Isengard RC1, I must say I’m a little disappointed with the stability of it. Normally it is rock solid but it’s crashed out on me a few times and I get a constant nag about an ‘extended info’ script needing to be installed. I’m sure any such issues will be ironed out when Isengard is ready for final release but for now, I’m going to move away from it.

Vanilla build is still my first priority! Expect it soon (how many times can I say that until you get annoyed waiting for it? Haha).

If there’s a need to revert to Helix, there is a build that addresses the SDCARD issue in my previous post – here’s the link: http://openelec.tv/forum/124-raspberry-pi/75281-openelec-5-0-3-still-corrupts-sd-card-on-pi2?start=210#137875 The way I’ve done this is in the past is to download the tar file in the 1st link and put it into the “Update” folder when you browse to the IP of your running OpenELEC Helix instance. In other words, install Helix then update using the tar file. There’s also the .img file which could be even easier, though I personnally haven’t tested it.

As for the Vanilla, yes please! :)

The thing that makes it important to me personally is that now I can make a backup of my entire 32GB build via a .tar.xz file and use it as a custom installer option via USB drive, making life much easier if I upgrade to a 64GB card, or when my current card breaks (its been abused alot by this venture!), I know that any 32GB replacement card will work (.img files have an exact size that needs to be adhered to whereas this NOOBS method doesn’t).
I’d love to hear more about this feature. I’m sure you’ll release details as to how to do this. Thanks!

Hi all.

Quick post before I go to bed (its 2am and I have work @ 8am. :s )

After around 4 hours of compiling and testing and 6GB of dependancy downloads (!!)…. I have now got a version of NOOBS installer that will allow installing via a USB stick!

“So what??”, I hear you cry… well this means that you can now claw back nearly all of your precious SD card space as it no longer has to carry the burden of the recovery files. This means a saving of approx 1GB, based upon my last build and it means I can potentially include more in my builds (if necessary) without the sacrifice of SD card space and not so much stripping back is required. It also means that an 8GB install is completely feasible now, whereas before you had very little space to play with.

Anyway – its something Ive been trying to solve for a while until I eventually stumbled over a Github fork of NOOBS for this sole purpose. What a swine it was to compile though!! :o

I will address questions tomorrow and will finally get the ‘Vanilla’ build out! :o (and it will be based on this ‘new’ version of NOOBS so you have the option of USB install or normal – as will all of my builds from now).

All the best,
Steve

Ok, so I found a cheap sony ps3 controller on craigslist close so I thought I would see if that was the problem. I guess not. I went through the same steps and while my remote buzzes when I hit the ps button (which did not happen on the generic one) I am still stuck on the page that says it needs to recognize a controller. I plugged it in with the usb and set all the controls, much like the other one, but was never able to set it up with the bluetooth. The one thing left in this equation is my cheap bluetooth dongle, but before that, I thought I would see if anyone else has seen this.

Hi,
I need to set up a N64 USB controller and am hang an awful time gettigneverything set up.

I have a N64 USB Controller and need the yellow keys, and Z button to work also another major issue is there is NO “Select” Button on this controller, So it is trying to make the Z button the select button and exiting my game and all kinds of other unfortunate events. Is there anywhere that has a pre configured layout of files for this Controller I can Copy and Paste? and also I am having trouble understanding how to set up the Save, Load and Exit settings as well to the controllers :( Please Help.

Hi,

After countless hours of tweaking and tinkering and absolute frustration! I finally have RetroPie working and loading all my games. BUT one thing I realize is that the controllers don’t quite work right at all.

What I’ve done is purchased Retro NES, SNES,Sega and N64 Controllers that are USB.

I am a Noob by every aspect of the book on raspberry pi and Linux so none of it really makes sense. ANYWAY….. I need to know (The Simplest way) to make every controller work for EACH of it’s corresponding Emulator. I need to just be able to plug in the N64 controller and load a N64 rom and BOOM its working!
(Is this possible?)

Also how do I set it up where I do NOT need a keyboard to save, exit etc. ?

Thanks in advance and please remember I need the Simplest way possible to do this without a bunch of hassle ….cause believe me setting this up all right and getting wifi to work etc was stress enough Thanks

Okay, I solved my Tankstick issues, mostly, in case anyone else is having difficulty.

First thing, however – the trackball does NOT work in MAME4ALL, period. I understand some folks have gotten it to work by unplugging the other USB connector first, and then starting MAME4ALL. Remember, the Tankstick uses two USB ports – one for the joysticks, one for the trackball. I haven’t tried this as it’s too much of a pain in my rear and is a work-around at best. Now having said that, the trackball works fine in AdvMAME, so I play all my trackball games using that emulator instead.

How I got the joysticks working properly was to go into the Retropie Setup menu and DISABLE the Xarcade2jstick service. This is weird because I’ve been using that option ENABLED since 3.0 Beta 1 without problems. However, with it enabled, I cannot get any Retroarch emulators to recognize the Tankstick buttons or joystick. Again, this was NOT a problem until I updated to the latest binaries a few days ago.

Anyway, with the Xarcade2jstick service disabled, I then used the Retropie Setup menu to install the joypad configurations (not sure if this is actually needed or not) and then everything works okay. In MAME4ALL and AdvMAME I had to reconfigure the inputs the first time I launched them, and then customize anything per game the first time I played them, but at least it all works again.

Again, it’s kind of a pain and I did not have to do this with prior versions of the 3.0 beta – the Xarcade2jstick service basically took care of it all. But it’s all working now after going through the motions to configure things manually.
UPDATE:Now the controller won’t work and I have to restart the pi by pulling the plug. How Do I make the default controls apply to this new emulator?

side note: sometimes I have to reset my controller config on startup, how can i make it permanent?

Will any USB N64 controller work with the retro pi?

EDIT: Ok two things, I just want to make kodi always boot first ie be the default boot OS, how can I do that?

EDIT EDIT: I shutdown via ssh and noticed these words about config?
Hi. Sorry for delay in replying.

So I will try and tackle your questions one by one!

N64 Controller config – as far as I am aware the controller config is all done manually for the N64 emulators (except the libretro version). So you would need to edit the specific mupen64.cfg file and add in your controller mapping as you want it. This includes an ‘exit emulator’ key. If you do a google search you will find a guide on how to do it (I can’t remember off the top of my head, sorry).

Resetting controller config – are you referring to Emulation Station here, i.e. it will ask you to set up all your buttons again, even though you already have? If so – I haven’t experienced this in the RC1 build personally. Have you checked the rest of the forums to see if anyone else has this problem (maybe with your specific controller?).

Im not sure about the N64 controller compatibility, sorry.

Making KODI always boot first – this isn’t the way I designed it. Personally, I like to stay in one OS permanently until I want to switch back to the other. That doesn’t mean to say that it is impossible however. I could easily build a script that reset the partition back to KODI on every shutdown from within Emulation Station BUT I would need to locate the existing shutdown script that ES calls when ‘Shutdown’ is triggered. If anyone knows where to locate this then I will make an optional script for this (maybe an extra item in the RetroPie Setup section?)

So finally, the screenshots you posted are mainly about the rumble support. This is probably because the N64 controller plugin is set to ‘Rumble Pak’ in the emulator config files. Im not entirely sure if rumble support is even implemented, but either way its not working on your pad! I probably wouldn’t worry about the message – its just a warning, however you can disable it by setting all pad plugins to be ‘Memory Card’ instead of ‘Rumble Pak’ in the config files where you setup your button mapping. Can’t remember the exact filenames though from memory, but have a snoop around and you’ll find it.

Hope this helps!

Hey everyone. Can I add my huge thanks to all contributors (especially floob and techtipsta) as a newcomer with no linux experience – everything works very well and is of exceptional quality.

I am just finishing off the physical building of my project, and need to decide on a few last things.

One of the issues I seem to be having with my pi 2 B is occasional corruption of data on my SD card, resulting in fsck errors and strange behaviours (deleting my images from scraping on each reboot claiming they contain errors, for example).

I am hoping to fix this by using a proper shutdown method as opposed to simply pulling the usb cable out. For my final build I won’t have a keyboard available – I am using an IPAC-2 to interface a standard arcade buttons and joysticks with a couple of extra microswitches for function buttons.

How difficult is it to program one of these microswitches to function as a “soft” power button (via input through the IPAC-2)? Or would purchasing something like the PowerBlock be what I am after here?

Thanks, and pictures coming soon!

Update: I contacted the guy who made the MAME patch that allowed for up to 22 buttons, and he was kind enough to make a custom kernel for me that made it so the adapter was recognized as two separate controllers instead of one. This was a perfect solution! It not only solves the MAME issue, but all other emulators, such as gngeo. I’m not sure if he has an account on here, but his github profile is: https://github.com/ian57 . All credit goes to him!

Since it was working perfectly, I went ahead and mounted the Sega Saturn ports in my NES case–the first step in my custom build. These ports fit almost perfectly into the NES port holes. I only had to dremel out about one mm to make them fit. If anyone is curious, the adapter is the Mayflash SS Controller Adapter for PC USB (amazon link).

I’m happy to say this issue is resolved for me. Thank you again choccyhobnob for your help! I really appreciate the efforts.

I only just got Retropie up and running last night, so I haven’t had much of a chance to do anything yet. I’m also very new to Linux based systems – my only exposure was over a decade ago, and was very brief – but, although I’m long since removed from MS-DOS, I did have a lot of experience with it, so I’m not entirely new to command lines.

Anyhow – first question – USB syncing. I have successfully gotten ROMs onto my pi, but I’m wondering about removing them. I’m not home, so I can’t try this right now, but if I remove ROMs from my USB drive, will the pi sync by removing any ROMs that don’t exist on the USB drive, or does it only add from the USB drive.?

Second question – I have a TP-Link TL-WN725N (don’t know if it’s V1.0 or V2.0). I could not get it running. Running the lusb command, I could see my gamepad, and I could see my keyboard, but I couldn’t see the wireless adaptor. Going though online tutorials didn’t make any sense – it could be that I was sleep deprived, and they’ll make more sense to me when I go through them again.

My first thought is that the adaptor requires more power than my pi can provide, and that I need to run the adaptor off a hub. Is that likely? Or is there something else I need to do to get the pi to recognize the adaptor, and get it running?

Thanks!

there is a file called es_input.cfg that can be added manually (file path is /home/pi/.emulationstation I believe.):

This is for an xbox controller and a keyboard

You just have to modify the device name and buttons to match your own controller. you can type lsusb to see what your devicename is

Hi,

This is my first post and I am absolutely loving the retropie! Only purchased my Raspberry Pi 2.0 last week and so far I am enjoying the nostalgia!

I would be really appreciative if someone could help me. I am pretty clueless at the commands and such, and I was hoping someone could help. I would ideally like to keep my roms on SD card with the exception of PSX isos. Is there a specific command I could enter so that my PSX roms are loaded from my USB stick, but all other roms are loaded from SD?

Many thanks in advance.

I managed to get my PS3 controller working wirelessly thanks to Floob’s excellent YouTube tutorial but when I unplug the USB cable and press the pair button the controller always lights the second LED and shows js0 & js1 in /dev/input. Everything works okay, and I’m only running one controller right now, but is there any way I can force the wirelessly paired controller to js0, and maybe delete js1?

Thanks,
Jamie.

Its just an idea for now to make a BMO using retropiehere is a portable n64 that is the approx size of the BMO
For those who don’t know who dont know who BMO is he is a portable robot-console from cartoon series “Adventure Time”here take this picture
so the hardware is easy to make, the problem is the OS
i have chosen RetroPie because it alredy can play games,
Now we need to fork RetroPie to play fulscreen videos of beemos face that i will make but they will be like this(he will speek if you move infront of his camera he will say this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Awj2_Qr1YUo
also if you type stuff in the console (a question tab) that is activated by pressing a button on his belly(also there is a keyboard option(usb))
he will activate retropie’s interface and games will be playable

console.word == raw_input:

if console.word == "Play me a song bmo" or "play a song" or "bmo play me a song":
omxplayer myvideo.mp4

of corse you will need to do it better than me beacuse that is just and example of poorly written phyton + Gnome

also for omxplayer (we need to make a better player that can only be closed if a button is pressed and it oppens RetroPie) there is a Gnome code needed

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get -y install omxplayer

of course when

so i need help with the os (if you dont want to make it just give me some advice)
also the project may continue if i have engout support

Total newbie question but this is how it is.

Got my raspberry pi model B+ version 1.2
running retro pi version 2.6, V1

Got the image expanded onto an 8GB micro SD card, booted and loaded ok
Got to the ES screen where it asks to push a button on the controller, sits and crashes after about 20 Seconds and restarts

I am running a generic joystick and button kit with a USB interface card, Seems like it went together pretty smooth,

Tried a PS3 controller as well, same issue, when you push a button to configure it it crashes, if you just leave it idle for 20 + seconds it crashes.

I hit F4 and came out to the console in ES and its staying up and running so I assume its not hardware?

I am used to working with windows and Novell, this is a bit outside my norm.

Thanks for ng this and coming back. Much appreciated. here area a few of my thoughts.

1 – I personally prefer my roms on usb/external. This also makes it easier to add/remove roms, especially for my non-technical friends. Plug it in PC and do what you need/ LoL

Done. No configs to change. No need to expand SD card. Maybe some users might like this and you do not have to make multiple versions?

2 – Your arcade classics gamelist is fantastic. I would keep them maybe and and users can overwite if they want to. If you do the usb thing above, and scrape, it saves the game list on the usb along with images and yours remain on the sd and just ignored.

Hopefully this helps and gives ideas.

Thanks

Guys, this is great idea to store all rooms on external USB storage!
I’m not a technical guy :) and for me it will be the best option after dual boot from smithers ofcorse :P

My directions for this –
-sudo apt-get install ntfs-3g (I have a 500Gb drive hooked with with psx games)
-sudo mount -t ntfs-3g -o uid=pi,gid=pi /dev/sda1 /home/pi/RetroPie/roms/
-Edit fstab and add /dev/sda1 /home/pi/RetroPie/roms ntfs-3g 0 1

Luis can you help me with this i have tried your guide here and i am trying to boot psx games via usb. i have followed your guide and i get this;

pi@retropie ~ $ sudo mount -t ntfs-3g -o uid=pi,gid=pi /dev/sda1 /home/pi/RetroPie/roms/
Mount is denied because the NTFS volume is already exclusively opened.
The volume may be already mounted, or another software may use it which
could be identified for example by the help of the ‘fuser’ command.

i have tried changing paths although i know you havent, and still no joy. Can anyone lend a hand here. Other than this i have no other faults and will soon be able to enjoy my retropie rather than spend countless hours of coding and trial and error lol

Thanks in advance

Hi Jodie.

‘thatguyinfl’ posted a method of getting PSX games to boot from usb which he says works great. Its in this thread somewhere if you wanted to have a scout about.

I’ve never tried it before myself but imagine it would be quite handy. I am desperate to try out some MEGA CD games but have ran out of space on my 32GB so it would be useful for me too!

(I’m aware the MEGA CD was a bit crap, but I loved it back in the day!).

Cheers.

i am new to this, so sorry for the stupid question:

Will i need an USB Receiver vor every xbox360 wireless controller, or can one receiver be used for two controllers?

Thanks

I had some knock off n64 controllers and the axis buttons were really finicky so when I would press up it would press up and right- i had to be real careful with each button press to make sure I only got the one I needed otherwise it would say it was taken already. Its possible yours may be similar. (It was actually the same controller name too- dragonrise generic USB.)
