I recently jumped on the raspberry bandwagon and I wanted to install retropie_v2.4.2. I was able to get it installed, expanded the space on the card, started SSH and put some roms in the proper directory.

When I start a mame rom it does start but I have no control via the gamepad nor keyboard. I have read in another thread that you can hit tab and set the buttons for the emulation but I was not able to do this.

The same thing is true with: The Atari 2600, N64, Sega Master System emulators. However, on the 3 just listed I can at least escape by pressing Escape.

Thanks!

The other revelation in that interview is that it maintains roughly the same level of overclockability, though it will likely need help staying cool whereas the B+ could usually be OC’d without additional cooling.

This is pretty promising for me, as it means we can probably bump to around 1260mhz or so without too much trouble.

I’d be surprised if between the core bump, RAM, OC ceiling, and the potential for multi threaded emus if we don’t see a playable n64 emulator on this new machine, but at the very least, it’s a rock solid $35 MAME machine with tons of room to grow as emus are upgraded to take advantage.

while there may be some improvements with the new hardware please temper your expectations… N64 emulation isn’t that great on a $20,000 computer either (in terms of compatibility)

Please someone could enlighten me:
it is possible to know if the project will work in Retropie Raspberry 2?
Can I make a Retropie project in my Rasp2 using the same tools used in a RaspB+ ?
Or they need to be updated? These updates are available?
Emulators N64 and PS1 has forecast operating in Rasp2?

ty sorry my english!

I was curious – one of the big things holding the Raspberry-pi 1 B+ back from N64 emulation was RAM, was it not? Wouldn’t increasing the pagefile space on the microSD card (I use a 32GB one…overkill, yes) fix that issue, or was it also the processor speed that was at work?

If I catch wind that the 2.0 can handle N64, though, I’m ordering it ASAP.

Are Playstation 1 games now in reach?

Just ordered mine. Hope it will be supported soon! This peace of hardware should finally be able to run the N64 emulator! *hope*

Step 1: Download Retropie 2.4.2 SD card image:
https://www.petrockblock.com/retropie/retropie-downloads/download-info/retropie-sd-card-image-v2-4-2-beta/

Step 2: After the first start close Emulationstation with “F4” and type:
cd RetroPie-Setup
sudo git pull
sudo ./retropie_setup.sh

Select source based installation and choose mupen64plus.

It could be possible to run step 2
with SD card image 2.3. But it is not tested or recommended.

How do I update to 2.42 and get mupen64plus?

Greetings everyone. Second time poster regarding the Raspberry Pi/RetroPie. I am in love with it, no complaints here except, of course, the N64 emulator. I’ve scoured the internet trying to figure out why the Mupen64Plus just doesn’t want to cooperate until last night I stumbled upon another forum telling people to update their installed versions of the
emulator.

At first I was getting the seg fault on line 22/23 (I forget exactly which now) and it would kick me back to the Emulation Station screen. I’ve now been running Mupen64Plus from XTerm root and at first I was able
to get my specific ROM (Mario Party 3) to boot up, but it was just all black. Choppy audio (no recognizable sounds from the game), unresponsive to controller or keyboard inputs. After last night’s update, I am now getting a new error.

This new error I can not find ANY explanation for on the internet. I tried Google and it only came up with 3 results, two of which were mirrored and they were both debugging logs so it didn’t really explain a workaround or any solution.

Here goes:
Core Warning: ROM Database: Unknown property on line 209

The line # goes from 200 up to 15764 inconsistently. At the very end it then says:
Segmentation fault
No specific line for the seg fault this time.

Any clues as to what is happening? I’ve even tried downloading a totally different version of the ROM (one .n64 extension, one .z64), both produce the same errors.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

When I try to play an N64 ROM it opens up a different prompt then usual that I can’t read and then goes back the the usual prompt that says closing ROM or something along those lines and then goes back to the list of N64 ROMS, and I have tried multiple ROMS. Any ideas on how to fix it?

Hey Mate,

Have you by chance tried to use the retropie_setup.sh script to update the binaries of mupen64plus?

I had the same issue as you and racked my brain about what was causing it. It only just hit me that I had to cancel the process for mupen64plus update half way through. Run through that process again using the script above.

e.g.
cd /home/pi/RetroPie-Setup/
sudo ./retropie_setup.sh

from the menu presented:
Select: Source Based Installation

From the list presented use space bar to deselect everything on the list except N64 emulator MUPEN64Plus-RPi

and hit ok with enter

let that run its long course ~1-2 hours

reboot – give it another go

I use my snes controller for n64…but I had to configure the controls to make the “z” trigger button the “L” button on the top left. This obviously takes the actual L button out of the equation, but for mario64 and mariokart, you don’t really need them so much. Edit the mupen64plus.cfg in /emulators/mupen64plus-rpi to match what you have in mupen64pkus.ini located in /usr/local/share/mupen64plus-rpi….I use retropie image 1.9.1, so the locations may have changed

Sorry I haven’t responded in a long time. I’ve been busy and kind of forgot about this. Anyways here is the file. I have also added a couple of other photos that may be of use to you.

I have added a few ROMS since last time and have a couple more questions if you don’t mind.

1. None of the N64 ROMS work. Is there some way to get them to work?

2. Some of the ROMS sounds are awful. Is there a way of fixing this or is it the ROM itself?

3. Now all of the sudden, when I exit a ROM, none of the buttons on my controller work unless I restart Emulation Station and re-calibrate my controller.

I just updated to 2.42 and was attempting to get the n64 emulator to work but even with over clocking it still lagged a ton and crashed my pi. I’ve pretty much come to the conclusion that the raspberry pi just lacks the processing power necessary for smooth emulation of the n64.
As fr as other issues with 2.4.2, for some reason in my case the psx games all crash after 1 minute even with the proper bios, so hopefully that issue will be fixed. Other than that I’ve been really impressed with the update- scummvm got some much needed improvements. Its scripted to add your games to emulation station when you populate them in the GUI as well as has controller controls rather than requiring a mouse. The home terminal incorporated a temperature guage on the central processor and now it’s easier to emulate on more than one version of an emulator. All in all I’ve been pretty impressed with the update, its definitely worth checking out.

I tried with my SNES controller and due to the fact of it lacking a joystick, the directions on n64 didn’t work. Plus as far as my experience goes I’ve never been able to get satisfactory results out of n64 emulation to the point that I would be even able to play it. I was able to play games on the PlayStation though with my SNES controller. You just have to configure the controller to the specific game at times depending on how many triggers are being used.

Hi Retropie forum.
I wonder if you can play n64, playstation and other more advanced emulators using an Snes controller (it does not have a joystick).
If anyone has experience with this please let me know how/if it worked.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I was playing around with some of the cfg files for various emulators because a thought occurred to me while I was trying to get the n64 working… I need frame skipping.

I have overclocked my pi (though I have no clue what I changed or why, I just copied someone from the overclocking sticky), I have a fan keeping it around 30degC, and Mario has a very bad stuttering problem (overclocking did NOTHING to help).

So rather than try speech therapy for poor Mario (Super Mario 64), I thought about frame skipping. It is an option that my PC emulators all (seem to) have, so I thought there might be one we can toy with in our n64 emulator.

So…
A: can we set a frame skip or set frameskipping to auto?
b: if yes to frame skip but no to auto, can we throttle?

N64 emulation will never be accurate/fast on the Raspberry Pi (maybe porting another N64 emulator, sincerely I do not expect too much speed), most N64 roms will crash or run at very low fps depending on how much is on the screen, even overclocking the Pi. About MAME, I’m going to test the game, maybe isn’t supported with that version (romset 0.37b5).

I would love to be corrected here, but I’m pretty sure no one gets N64 running at full speed on the Pi. It’s just not quite powerful enough.

For MAME roms, you don’t have the version that this MAME needs. Google MAME v0.37b5 ROMs.

Started a FRESH install of V2.4 and PRESTO! We have N64 emulation. I made a ROM image of my favorite game and my girlfriends favorite game. Now I have to figure out how to alter the settings for the specific emulator such as frame skips and over clocking.

N64 is clipping when Super Mario 64 starts. It gets worse when Mario’s face is on screen. I have not been much deeper than that yet because….

MAME:
For some reason, I was not able to get any Donkey Kong cart working (using alternative methods), so I tried another cart that I “borrowed” for testing. I always get the same error:

“Required files missing, game cannot be run”

I used the MAME emulator on my PC, and it works perfectly. Is there something I am missing here, or is it just a compatibility issue? If this is just ROM compatibility issues, I can just plug in the cabinet in the garage and run Jump Man after Polly on the original machine (though truth be told, the machine needs to be overhauled due to over use, hence using the r-pie)

Any ideas?

Hi,

Firstly just installed RetroPie and it is fantastic!

Unfortunately I’ve had problems running N64 games (blank screen – exits) and read on the forum that an update to 2.4.2 might be better.

Can someone tell me how to do this please? Currently on 2.3

Thanks!

RetroPie is relatively new, but there’s a community out there that have been doing this for many years – using HyperSpin or GameEx or many other front ends. I’m just leading up to the idea that here’s a lot of us that have been down this road :)

If you want to go further down this rabbit hole, you can remove all the games you can’t play with the controller setup you have. For example Centipede uses a trackball and Operation Wolf uses a light gun. You may want to play with this tool, which can build a list for you just based on the controls you have.

http://www.waste.org/~winkles/ROMLister/

I’ve used all the tools, but in the end I just have a subset of ROMs I manually maintain. It took me a while to put together, but that’s just a one time deal. It’s all the best classics, my favorites, favorites of my friends that come over, and some good party games thrown in for fun. Once I took out the ones I can’t play on my RasPi (trackball, spinner and lightgun), my list is 263. Which to me is much more pleasant than trying to scroll through thousands of games no one has heard of.

I do the same for my NES, SNES, N64, GBA, GameCube, PS1, etc. This hobby can take up your free time if you let it :)

I know a lot of other guys just put every possible game in and boast that they have 10,000 games or whatever. I don’t get it – to me that’s just a giant mess but to each their own.

Psx games runs estable and almost full speed (98% – 100%) in retropie 2.3 with this overclock settings (in retropie 2.4 PCSX ReARMed lags). Every other emulator runs smooth in 2.4 version ,minus n64 roms.

Just an example….

n64 ROMs show up, but won't play

That issue is when you load a rom, the emulator starts loading, then halts, closes, with “sementation fault in line 23”, then returns your to emulation station. As there are at least 20 (or more) different people who have stated that they have this problem over 4-6 different posts.

BUT…
I can start over with r-pie 2.4 and see if the issue persists. I assume there are many changes with the n64 emulator as that is my concern and you stated there have been many changes.

evilllama

I know this is a tired topic, but either I am screwing up the directions for fixing the n64 emulator and mame emulator, or something else is not working, I hedge my bets on the former. I get that famous line 23 issue when loading an n64 image then booted back to ES, and mame does the famous “back to ES” when I try to load my flash from the Donkey Kong machine in my garage (BTW it works on my PC emulator).

To tackle this in order, I would like to get my n64 roms working as my chinchilla ate through the video cable for my n64 console so I can’t play them ATM.

Current config.
R-pi B+
RetroPie 2.3

After searching the forums for about 4 weeks, tracking down every solution I can find here, I have not made any headway. I followed the direction stating to go to setup.sh and install experimental, it ran, it stopped… Waited about 6 hours and nothing happened. It had all the actions it had taken and commands it used, and at the bottom it said “more>” and gave me a solid cursor and stopped responding. I then had to power down (unplug) and power on again. Nothing changed.

I tried the other git pull way listed, and it ran from terminal and did the same thing. showed it’s work on screen, then stopped. Waited 1 hour this time, and nothing happened. I unplugged the unit and plugged it back in. No change.

I tried manually installing the emulator, and it still gives me the error then returns me to ES.

I started over with a brand new SD card and fresh image, and I still have the issue.

So, now that I am starting fresh with no alteration, where did I go wrong before, and how do I do it correctly this time? Is there anything else I can add to assist with diagnosing this?

Side note:
Maybe there should be a sticky for individual emulator issues and how to fix them? Also, does version 2.4 fix the n64 and/or Mame issues? It didn’t say anything about it in the notes…

I’m nowhere near the level of most of the chat in this thread but ddidnt want to clog up the board with another post.
I had these issues with the previous versions, so I may have something mis-configured.

1. Are there emulationstation navigation sounds? I hear none. I installed ESConfig, and force headphone output.
nope.

2. If I launch MAME (mame4all) I get a lot of background static/noise/sound.
I don’t get that here. And no other emulators affected ?
2a. I have followed suggestions about overclocking, forcing headphone output, etc, but I can’t seem to get rid of the static. The static does not get output when in terminal or lxde.
have you tried looking into things like

http://www.crazy-audio.com/2013/09/raspberry-pi-power-supply-noise-on-the-5v-rails/
or getting a ground loop isolator or something.

You would do better to take the audio out form HDMI though

3. When in a MAME game and I enter the TAB menu, I have some sort of controller conflict. The menu forcibly scrolls up when no keypress.
3a. I am using an Ultimarc IPAC as my controller via USB. So, really it’s just a keyboard.

not seen this. can’t advise sorry.

4. NES and N64 Roms won’t load. I have them in their respective .ZIP files. EmulationStation sees them but I get a blank screen when launching.
this is not enough information to help with really. nothing outputted at all before the screen is blank ? tried unpacking the zips also ?

5. Ports. I have the Doom 1 and Doom 2 wads. When I try to launch Doom 1, it says ../rom/ports/Doom 1.sh not found. It is there.
are you sure you are running the new image ? There is no file of that name in the new image – it is called “Doom 1 Shareware.sh”
