[quote=2473]Indeed, the Retrolink gamepad are the best. I’m using NES, SNES & Genesis controllers. Not perfect as original gamepad but excellent quality.

    Retrolink NES Gamepad

    Retrolink SNES Gamepad

    Retrolink Genesis Gamepad

Those are very easy to install, no driver need.

Also, I’m using XBOX 360 wireless controller which has the best grip for me !

How did you get the NES controller working? mine wont let me save the config because I don’t have enough buttons to set them all

    Hello all,

Is anyone else having a problem with box art not showing correctly after running ES Scraper?

I am so close to having a completely functioning RetroPie setup, but this issue is baffling me. I know that I have successfully run ES Scraper in the past and had box art and descriptions show correctly.

    A little background…

    Running 1.9.1 image of RetroPie
    Model A 256MB Pi
    128MB memory split
    900 Mhz overclock
USB hub with keyboard, joypad, and Wi-Fi adapter

After running ES Scraper, I can go into the file system on the Pi and see the downloaded box art. However, I just get a white space on the left side of the screen. I’ve noticed navigation lags when you go through the list of games that have the messed up box art. Another thing that’s weird is that some games will show box art correctly. Others’ box art is huge.

I have also tried installing 1.7 image, but the box art does not show correctly after scraping on it, either. It’s like scraping is messing with the code that displays the list of games. I know that a gamelist.xml file is created when scraping. Maybe that’s the issue?

    Any ideas?

    Thanks!

Hey guys awhile back I bought a USB NES controller (http://www.amazon.com/Classic-USB-NES-Controller-PC/dp/B002YVD3KM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1388455255&sr=8-1&keywords=nes+usb+controller) and basically I want to play my NES games with it but when I go to setup the gamepad it wont let me save the settings cause I cant map enough buttons (its lacking like 4 buttons) is there anyway to force it to use the controller even though all the buttons wont work on all games?

also is there anyway to use a second keyboard so me and my dad can play?

I am using a Saitek P880 USB game controller which works great except when I try to start a game, the game will only accept input from the keyboard to start but after I start with keyboard it will no longer accept input from controller. When I first get into a game the controller works just fine but not for start. This is in any game in either NES or SNES.

I have made a project of creating the retro NES all in one gaming console using USB SNES controller and a 512 RPI.

After working my way through some of the initial hang-ups (ie, the path for config file has changed since 99.9% of the websites or forums have posted guides) I have now come to two issues that I haven’t been able to find a solid answer for.

The first is regarding wireless connection using a micro usb wifi dongle. I have the recommended Edimax 150Mbps nano usb wireless adapter, however I’m not sure how to go about setting up the wifi connection through RetroPi, or if it is even possible. An article I read recommends using the pre-installed GUI with the Raspbian OS, however the only thing I have installed on my card is the RetroPie. Is there a way to set up a wireless connection so I don’t need to plug in the ethernet cable with only the RetroPie installed, or do I need to partition the SD and load the Raspbian OS?

The second issue is regarding games lagging, particularly on larger games such as for the N64. I read in some previous postings on the N64 emulator that they were a bit buggy, some games don’t work and they may have lag issues. However, some of these articles were a bit dated, up to a year old. I figured there would be some improvements by now but I have not seen any “fixes” for game lag, and very few mentions of it at all. I read that I should overclock my RPi to the max it will go (http://www.raspberrypi.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?t=58395) and also to enable frame skipping.
Are there any recommendations for fixing lag or making these games playable, or are the N64 games just not really in a working condition at the moment?

One final thought.. is it the same to run the config file and edit it in the command screen interface on the Pi as to use WinSCP from my primary computer, click “edit” on the .cfg and modify/save the text?

Any answers, suggestions or better links would be appreciated.

OK, So I have Retropie installed and the emulators up and running.

Everything works GREAT using both controllers in the Retropie Game select screens.

When I load Super Mario World, controller two becomes almost non responsive.

    Controller 1 works just fine.

I’m using a pair of Tomee SNES USB controllers.

Both controllers are set up identically in the retroarch.cfg file

they both work flawlessly on the NES roms, but for some reason controller 2 doesn’t respond at all in SMW for the SNES.

    Any suggestions?

Thanks for the help motorhead. I logged back in via ssh to try to figure out if I’m logged in as root or not. I tried to delete one of the files again first, and it worked. So I’ve gone through and deleted all of them. (they were showing up as hidden files beginning with *__) Not sure why I couldn’t delete them before, but they’re gone now and everything is showing up correctly in emulationstation.

Your ideas about the gamelist.xml got me thinking though. I didn’t run es_scraper for this particular version of my gaming system because in the past it didnt rename everything correctly and I didn’t have time to go through and manually edit all the gamelist.xml files. So I dont think I have any gamelist.xml (doesn’t that only happen when you run es_scraper?) although none of my rom names are showing up with any underscores in emulationstation, even though I know the file name has it, so there’s gotta be some sort of gamelist.xml doing that right? I dont see it in my rom folders but I cant remember if that’s where they’d be.

anyway, its fixed now, working beautifully and I dont have storage space issues anymore thanks to the usb flash drive. I also haven’t had any sd card corruption even when the system freezes and I have to manually shut the power off. I was having a lot of issues with that when my roms and saves files were being stored on the sd card. I definitely recommend usb storage for roms, although it does take up one of your usb spots. but that can be solved by adding a powered usb hub or using a controller adapter where both controllers can hook into one usb port. there’s one on amazon for snes controllers that works great.

    anyway
    thanks!

Hey all! New member here (long time reader tho) with lots of love for this wonderful project! I have built this arcade cabinet for a dear friend and the final part is to get the controls set up for the only emulator I’m running on the Retropie – the Picodrive.

I have installed the IPAC-2 along with 2 arcade joysticks start buttons and action buttons, testing it’s functionality in various text editors and programming tools (downloadable from Ultimarc.com) and it’s working flawlessly. Setting up the Emulationstation controls works without problems too.

    BUT

Since a week or so I’ve been trying to get the retroarch config file correct – all with various but all more or less catastrophic results =(. Nothing I do in the Retroarch config file seems to have any effect whatsoever and I’m getting really frustrated. I’ve been reading these forums trying out all kinds of things without success:

    1. Updated pretty much everything
    2. Tried to disable SNESDev
    3. Installed a powered USB-hub
    4. Reprogrammed the IPAC-2 controller to use the exact keys understood by Retroarch

Any hints, tips, suggestions or advice would be really appreciated since this cabinet will soon have to be wrapped up in christmas paper! =)

ps. English is not my native language so please ask me to clarify if some things doesn’t make sense ds.

Cheers and many thanks in advance!

[Solved] Issues with retroarch.cfg configuration for joypads – exit emulator

First of all, want to say thanks to petrockblog, aloshi, and everyone involved with this forum. the RetroPie is amazing (when it works) and it’s getting better every day.

Anyway, I just moved all my roms over to a USB flash drive. I finally learned how to make the pi automount the drive, and I pointed the es_systems.cfg to the right place so all the roms show up.

The problem is that the pi is listing all the roms in the directory first with a *__ in front of the file name. Then at the end of that list, all the correct file names show up. The ones with the *__ do not load, the ones without it do load. So I can deal with it for now but I don’t want all my roms showing up double, then having to scroll down to the correct ones in order to play games.

This only started happening when I used USB storage for the roms. Any ideas? it looks like these are showing up as hidden files in each directory, and the pi won’t let me delete them (using ssh)

Haven’t seen this problem show up anywhere else on this forum or on the net in general.

any help would be awesome, thanks

    Hi,
Thank you Motorhead and Kitchuk for your help and input. Maybe changing the hdmi to hot plug will fix it. I’ll try it out.

    @Motorhead
    – I’m powering the pi using a 770mA 5v phone usb phone charger so not using the T.V. USB ports to power it. I tend to power on my T.V. before plugging in the pi. Both the terminal and xbian xbmc appear fine on all T.V.s but the EmulationStation in particular fails to start with certain T.V.s occasionally.

    Hi All

I really need some help getting a controller working I have tried two avenues with no luck!

First I’ve tried a standard unbranded pc usb controller – which is recognised by the pie and lets me setup through the input configuration no problem. However when I come to save the input settings I just get ‘Script Error’. If I just select the Retro Arch emulator it does say done but then the controller won’t work in game.

I’ve also tried setting this up through the updated setup script it says controller is recognised but when it asked me to configure I just get time out when pressing buttons on the pad?

    Secondly I’ve tried a wired xbox 360 controller – I’ve installed the xboxdrivers and enterered this code ‘xboxdrv -D i 0 –next-controller -i 1 –next-controller -i 2 –next-controller -i 3 –deadzone 4000 –dbus disabled’

This appears to set the controller up as the xbox light stops flashing and the player 1 light is on. However after pressing enter on the above command I get the message about the software being free to redistribute etc. but then just a flashing cursor no command prompt – when i reboot the xbox controller is no longer recognised!-( would using a powered usb hub solve this problem?

Sorry for the long post but if anyone can offer any assistance in getting either controller working it would be very much appreciated.

    Many Thanks
    Jason

I’m using a couple of PlaySega USB controllers. I got them because they use the Saturn’s button layout and have more than enough buttons to cover the old school consoles. I modified the global retroarch.cfg so it works with NES and SNES and modified the MegaDrive’s local retroarch.cfg to get the A, B and C buttons working properly.
I noticed that in the example dgenrc document that it references the X, Y, Z and mode buttons. Does anyone know how to make DGen access this rather than the retroarch.cfg files so X, Y and Z will be enabled?
Other than that, the direction pad is average at best.

Thought I would share a project I am currently working on. Sure other people have made this before but here is my take on it.

So far most things are working. Wired the SNES power button to the microusb extension cable. I also wanted all of the pi ports accesable so I think I did a decent job cramming them all into the back of the snes. All thats really left is making snesdev reboot with one button press on the gpio adapter, tweaking the emulators and settings, and adding a theme. Maybe a few other tweaks. Here are some pics:

PS3 Dual Shock 3 controller + Sitecom Bluetooth adapter (Genuine CSR chipset), patched sixad (). Best performance and functionality so far – works fine two rooms away in the living room and using a HDMI over CAT5E to get to the TV.

Might entertain a MasterSystem + SEGA USB adapter at some point.

Was using the Xbox 360 Wireless pad + adapter + xboxdrv but I found it causes performance to suffer in RetroArch.

So I am testing the GPIO with an NES controller, but jstest on js0 is not showing the Retropie GPIO, but my USB NES controller:
    pi@raspberrypi /dev/input $ jstest js0
    Driver version is 2.1.0.
    Joystick (InfiniteNesLives.com (S)NES_USB) has 2 axes (X, Y)
and 8 buttons (BtnX, BtnY, BtnZ, BtnTL, BtnTR, BtnTL2, BtnTR2, BtnSelect).
    Testing … (interrupt to exit)
    Axes: 0:-32767 1:-32767 Buttons: 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:off 4:off 5:off 6:off 7:off ^Z
    [3]+ Stopped jstest js0
    `

Do I have to remove js0, or should it redetect the controller on the GPIO? I forced a fresh install of SNESdev via the setup script…

Tested the momentary switch function and that appears to be working via the testbutton script…

Edit: nope I forgot to unplug the usb controller… Did so and rebooted, but now I don’t even have a js0 or js1…

Service also appears to be running…

    Edit2: okay, if I restart the service I get js0 and js1…

Edit2: Nevermind, :) I performed the enable on restart from the retropie setup script and now they show up on start up… Guessing when I force a new install it removed that…

I am using the Sony PS3 controllers wirelessly over with a ASUS USB-BT211 adapter plugged directly into the raspberry pi. Now, it took a little setup to get working but the linked guide was very helpful, just make sure you check my post for a few of the guide’s commands that need to be fixed. If you have any questions I’ll be happy to answer them, just post them below

That’s not bad at all! I changed the single press from R to H to reset the ROM and kept 3 and 5 press as is for now… I got the GPIO board the other day and plan to wire it up this weekend! I also got a shutdown switch from Mausberry Circuits that I will be wiring up to power/shutdown… Thanks!

I tried the new feature. I updated both setup script and binaries. I use a Xbox 360 remote controller with a usb receiver. A little feedback:
/home/pi/RetroPie/emulators/RetroArch/configs/, I had to create the directory. Is this correct?
    – Why do you remove the keyboard input config from the es_input.cfg? It doesn’t hurt ;)
    – also in es_input.cg, joystick section, the buttons configuration for left, right, down and up is missing or the d-pad. So I can’t navigate through emustation.

First, I love this site and everyone here. Recently finished my RetroPie build. It’s great.

Now, would it be possible to make the Pi boot up from a usb controller, much like the USB Wake up from S3 feature or Power on by Keyboard feature in most BIOS?

If not, would mounting a switch to the GPIO pins to achieve the same purpose be that difficult? The reason I ask is I’d like to be able to boot the Pi back up without having to unplug the power and then plug it back in.

    Thanks.

    Hi!

Are you powering the PI with USB from the TV? If yes, force HDMI output. When the TV powers the PI, and the HDMI from TV its not ready, PI starts without it.

I forgot to mention that I also have my N64 controllers converted to USB – hopefully the N64 games will work better as the emulation improves. Even with my Pi overclocked to 1000 arm, 500 core, 500 sdram, overvolt 6 and 384mb gpu the games looks a bit choppy

I have two original SNES controllers, converted to USB. Even though it sometimes takes a while until the emulator recognizes them and sometimes the characters would initially go to the left when starting a game, they work great.

I just have to sometimes press the buttons on the controller a couple of times prior to playing a game, for the rest of the session everything works well.

It has external power supply. Im fighting with usbmount, trying different versions with no luck…

UPDATE: I finally find a version of usbmount that leaves emulators working fine, but the problem is that I cant automount the HDD. I can manually mount it with:

    sudo mount /dev/sda1 /media/almacen

    or with:

    sudo mount UUID=4CA0-D41E /media/Almacen

Then I updated .fstab with this line:

    UUID=4CA0-D41E /media/Almacen vfat defaults 0 0

But nothing happens using mount -a or rebooting, HDD is not mounted…

Hi! I have my psx ROMS in a usb hdd. The frontend can see them and are playable, this isn’t the issue. The problem is that the system gives a timeout error when starting with the hdd conected, and before this, some emulators dont work properly. This is the error code:

    udevd[190]: timeout: killing ‘/usr/share/usbmount/usbmount add’ [365]

For NES – 2 NES USB controllers (same as the retrolink ones above)

For SNES – My ORIGINAL SNES controllers with a USB adapter

For Genesis/Megadrive – I have 6 button PlaySEGA controllers (official Sega Genesis controllers)

These are the only systems I wanted to use RetroPie for. I have them all working except I can’t seem to get the PlaySega controllers to work when running a game. They work in the menu screens only!

Does anyone know how to configure the megadrive emulator and map the controller buttons? The built-in tool does not work and I can’t seem to do it myself either :(

Hey everyone, this will be my first post on the forums! :)

I have the raspberry pie rev B, which i’ve installed retropie on, using the prepared image version.

i had no trouble setting up the controls using my old, wired USB controller (with both a d-pad and analog sticks). But i wanted some greater distance to the system, since my couch is on the other side. So i bought a Trust GXT 30, wireless controller (USB).

Using the initial configuration in emulationstation and setting up the controller for the menus worked great. Then i set it up for retro-arch, and i wanted to use the d-pad instead of the analog sticks, since i’m only playing SNES games. However, doing this resulted in that the d-pad wouldn’t work in the games (only in emulationstation). All other keybindings worked as they should.

After a few tries without any success, i tried to map the analog stick instead of the d-pad. Which actually worked just fine! Except the great loss in precision for gaming. So i would really want the d-pad to work.

When i try to map the d-pad, i can se in the retroarch.cfg that they are represented as “hats” (up = h0up, down = h0down, and so on), which differes from my old, wired controller.

I hace tried looking around, but haven’t found any real help on the subject. Does anyone have any idea of what’s wrong?

    Best regards,
    gunnar90

I am finally at a point that I can configure my control panel in my arcade build. Yea! Big thanks to all the efforts that are going into the project. I have some questions about configuration and a few general questions I am hoping to get answers for.

I have a two joystick setup, 6 buttons each player, 1p and 2p buttons. 1p coin and 2p coin. Plus 4 extra buttons I can map for other things. I have a USB trackball with 2 mouse buttons and spinner. In addition I have two retro console control on order that shoudl arrive Wednesday. I am using an IPAC to wire everything up.

The plan is to use the joystick and buttons for a much as possible.

    Here is what I think I understand….

The config file I will need to be editing for MAME for my control panel is located at “/home/pi/RetroPie/configs/all/retroarch.cfg”. I am using the default MAME install which is MAME4ALL. Can someone verify the location is correct?

I tried to run through the config setup last night via the GUI but this did not seem to have an option to do the button presses and save for MAME. I assuse I need to enter the buttons commands manually? Is there a command I can run to automate the MAME config so I can just press and assign buttons? If not, is there a default file I can see to map all my control joys and buttons? I found this in another post and I am wondering if I run this will to do the auto config GUI for MAME?

    COMMAND=retroarch -L /home/pi/RetroPie/emulatorcores/imame4all-libretro/libretro.so –config /home/pi/RetroPie/configs/all/retroarch.cfg –appendconfig /home/pi/RetroPie/configs/mame/retroarch.cfg %ROM%

Questions about MAME, I noticed there was an option to install AdvMame. If I do this I assume now MAME4 ALL will no longer be an option? Everything I am read says MAME4ALL seems to be the more stable version?

Last, I seem to have deleted the one file that gets installed for DOOM to work. I have the WADs but need to get the file that is install as part of the default install.

Well, I think that is it for now. I am not having any luck getting anything working NEOGEO outside of MAME so as soon as I get the above taken care of NEOGEO is next on my list to get working.

    Thanks again.

    Hi Folks,

I have some technicals questions, The retropie is under a optimized Linux version if i’m not wrong now: I wanted to do on my own a small arcade machine with a 15″ screen, for the controllers I thought maybe buying a cheap snes usb control plugged in one of the usb ports and hard soldering the joystick and all the bottoms on the controller board would work riiiight ?. This is my first question, I was thinking to use the Raspberry Pi with Retropie off course easier because is made for it or literally buy on ebay a snes and hard solder the buttons etc but than I noticed I would have a problem to plug this monitor I was planing to buy and play properly with a good image and fluid: http://www.ebay.de/itm/TFT-Display-Fujitsu-Scenic-View-3815FA-15-38cm-/251373237001?_trksid=p2054897.l4275

Actually I’m scared that the tiny 700hz processor from raspberry Pi wouldn’t manage properly even If I overclook to 1Mhz and ventilate the machine with a passive or active cooler.
Coincidently Some Months ago I bought one of dose android dongles with a dual core processor at 1.4 mhz but its on a android system and I guess not made for those things, I read somewhere and from my own experience that android are quite good for changes and flexibles Not like Ios or other system, I was wondering would I had any way to try to put the retropie system on one of those little dongles, that I just plug the power on my arcade cabine turn on and bam straight to my snes games selection menu ? because Installing a emulator on the android would always need to slide to the application and etc. and I wouldn’t wan’t to have any thing to do just power on boot and paly. I think it would be cheaper because I then wouldn’t need to buy a raspberry pi yet,

I am really open I and thankfully for any comment in advance Luca

Cool, thanks much for the reply! I don’t intend of doing a lot of multiplayer, so one of each is really what I am after… I just ordered one from you, thanks for making that available!

I have original controllers that have been modified to USB, I wonder then if I can make the USB player 2…

    Thanks again!
