Hi,

I’m using a RPi 1 model B. I have a Mayflash USB Dual Snes adapter from here

I have the controllers working but there is an issue when you hold a button, for example on mario if you hold the D-Pad down button mario should duck. But what seems to happen is he ducks but keeps popping his head up, as if the button isn’t being held down it’s being pressed multiple times.

The same happens for button B, for example when you get a leaf and press B he spins, but if you hold B you can run fast, but in this case he keeps spinning round and round and round.

I have tried cleaning the PCB of the controller and it hasn’t seemed to help at all.

Does anyone else have a Mayflash with a solution to this?

Thanks
Mike

Yes, you only use the USB mini connector. Also, You need to attach a toggle button to the ControlBlock.

Maybe you can post one or two images with your setup here?

Hi,

I want to do your design but how hard would it be to put a back like this

Except replace the amazon logo with the raspberry pi from the original design and put in the two should buttons.

Also how hard would it be to put USB ports into the side?

Hi there,

I wanted to give a shot at an old PS1 controller (the one without the analog. sticks).

I connected it to the Pi with the following adapter:
http://www.benryves.com/images/ps2-to-pc/adaptor-product.jpg

The controller is detected by Emulation Station and I can navigate in the menus.

So I exited ES and run the “register RetroArch” command.
There, during the key mapping, when I press a key, nothing happens and I get the timeout, and for each key this is the same story.

In the end, it says that the following file has been created:
/media/juliend/retropie/opt/retropie/emulators/retroarch/configs/TwinUSBJoystick.cfg

Only the first 2 lines were filled.

So I copy-pasted the key mapping from a working wired PS3 BigBen controller. I just ignored the analog sticks ones.

I attach the file for reference.
Do you know why the controller is recognized in ES but not by RetroArch ?

The strange thing is that RetroArch called the gamepad “Twin USB” itself. So in a way, it has recognized it…

Hi,

In order to make it more fun, I bought here and there several types of controllers depending on the system I want to play with.

– 2 wired BigBen controllers PS3-like

So I got my usb mini cable, excited to be able to go forward with my project, and nothing happens…

Am I correct in assuming it’s just the mini to the port on the Control Block that powers everything and That I don’t use the micro connector on the main board? If so, I am missing something somewhere… my soldering looks good, I have no idea what else I would check to figure out why this thing isn’t lighting up.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Hi There,

First of all, I’d like to thank you for all the precious information available on this website.

Thanks to this, I’ve already been able to:

– Install the RetroPie image on my Raspberry Pi 2
– Configure my PS3-like (now autodetected) controllers in every RetroArch emulator.

My material is:
– A Raspberry Pi 2
– HDMI and RJ45 cables
– A 8 GB class-10 µSD card

In order to make it more fun, I bought here and there several types of controllers depending on the system I want to play with.

– A USB keyboard

My open points are the following:

– When I play a PSX game, the game is launched in a kind of window/frame. This window/frame fits more or less the size of my TV. The problem is that within the frame, the game is slightly zoomed which makes the image being cropped. The problem was specific to CTR. When I start another game before, and then CTR, the image is not cropped anymore. Strange but working workaround. :)

– For PSX, I’ve another issue: the graphics are not so good. Reason is that by default no shader is used. My questions are: 1) will using a shader on a Pi2 prevent a full speed emulation for PSX ? 2) which one are you using ? always the same for each game ? solved by setting “smooth_video” parameter to true in the “all” retroarch.cfg file.

– I saw that the RetroArch emulator for SNES is PocketSnes. With this emulator, I have some compatibility issues (display glitches, …) with some Roms (e.g. DBZ Super Butoden 2 in FR – I precise I use the good rom, the one with the ‘!’ in the filename). In Snes9x the rom plays nicely. So you can (and should ;) ) tell me: “then use Snes9x”. The issue is that Snes9x does not seem to use the configs defined in file “UsbGamepad.cfg”. So my question is : within PocketSnes, are there some settings that would help getting a better emulation ?

– For N64, I also use the RetroArch emulator in order to get benefit from all the standards (UsbGamepad.cfg). The problem is that Mario Kart M3 (E) ! rom is a mess on that emulator. Even the “press start screen” is buggy. Again, are there some settings that would enhabce the emulation ? I hope so because I never read elsewhere that someone had such an issue with that rom. FYI, this rom plays nicely on other emulators and on other platforms also.

As you can read, I’m trying to use RetroArch as much as I can in order to have standard configs for all my emulators, … And I hope that some of you have succeeded in configuring their RetroPie like this so you can give me some advises.

Have a wonderful weekend,
Regards.

J.

it’s a standard 4 hub usb off ebay again, about £3, just strip back the plastic on them to make them more flexible. the faceplate I made on a laser cutter using plastic from another project which happened to match, the memory card doors are too thin and small to adapt.

It’s not pretty inside with all the glue used to hold them but once put together you don’t see anything of this.

Simply put your card with your existing installation in to a USB card reader and get the correct drive letter from Windows Explorer. Make sure the correct drive letter is selected in WinDisk32. Give the image a name like RetroPie_Backup_4-2-2015.img. Click read.

After waiting what can seem like an eternity, you will have your backup image.

To put your backup image on a card, the process is the same as writing the initial RetroPie image. Put your clean card in the card reader. Make sure you select the correct drive letter. Select your RetroPie_Backup_4-2-2015.img. Click write.

Wait another eternity and you should have a copy of your original installation.

I’ll dig out some more photos as I am back tinkering with this one as the Neo Geo X one is done.

I used a PSX to usb dual converter, removed the original ports off the psone board and soldered the pins, replacing the converter ports. Ebay sell them for a few pounds. I think you can use the GPIO ports but that seemed too much hassle. RetroPie reads the usb as a twin joystick, works out the box.

The biggest pain in the arse is wiring in the 4 usb hub above it where the memory card used to sit, not much room there.

I Have another PSone unit that I will perform the same on, I’ll take photos of that process as I know how to make it smarter looking.

I have a problem with my psx roms.
When I transfer them to my retropie using an USB I see the flashing light indicating that it’s transferring. However, when I restart the Pi when it’s done it doesn’t show in the emulatorlist.
When I give the comment cd /home/pi/Retropie/roms/psx/ and use ls -a I see that the files are there.
It’s called Spyro2.bin.ecm

I’m using retropie 3.0 beta
What am I doing wrong here?

CSR dongles should work according to http://elinux.org/RPi_USB_Bluetooth_adapters

One thing that springs to mind from the instructions I followed is that you need to have both devices plugged in at the start of the process – bluetooth dongle AND PS3 controller.

Is there any other way you can test that the dongle itself is working?

Sorry if that doesn’t help!

I use the set up method where you use the SD card to boot and then a USB drive to actually run everything.

For me the versions of the software on the sd card and the USB thumb drive weren’t the same. Once I made them the same the issue went away.

If you’re only using the SD card, which may actually be plenty on a pi2, this wouldn’t be the solution for you.

Make sure you controllers are plugged in before you turn it on.
And try search for your specific controller on the forums to see if anyone else got them to work.
I was using the iBuffalo SNES USB controllers.

Hello! i got my RPi for a couple of days ago and mange to set it up just fine. but i’ve got 3 Major Problems now.
i got a 16 GB Micro Sd card but when i try to add games to it, it says that the Card is full (???)
so i tried to load the games with my USB instead. i plugged in the USB to the RPI. then plugged it in to my computer and found the newly created ROM file. located the right folders and put my games in them. plugged my USB back into the RPi, but the games are not there :/
i found a tutorial on how to fix it with terminal by changing the directionally i think. BUT i need to write some commands on my RPI in the terminal, for some reason when i free SHIFT-7 (which is / for me) i get a ”⨨of some sort. i’ve tried all other keyboards combinations.
i got a Swedish keyboard by the way.

Hi All

I’ve been trying to setup a genuine PS3 DualShock3 controller on my Pi and am failing miserably. for whatever I can simply not get the controller to pair up on RetroPie 2.6 or 3.0 Beta. I’ve followed various guides and used “RetroPie Setup” to install the driver, the Pi can see the controller over usb and is listed in jstest but as soon as the cable is unplugged the lights flash and eventually the controller turns off after a short time. What are the actual correct steps to get it to?

I’ll apologise now as I’m sure I’m not the first person to ask this but I’ve yet to find a post, page that actually provides a working solution. Should it be of use I’m using a CSR based Bluetooth adapter.

Any help would be greatly appreciate.

Cheers

No fstab entries. Just delete the default rom folder, plug in a usb external hdd, and symlink the rom folder from the hard drive to where the old folder was as outlined here: https://www.petrockblock.com/forums/topic/usb-rom-storage-curiosity/#post-88737

There’s no need to permanently mount it, as long as it’s plugged in it’s mounted and the roms are pointed to the right place.

I have 45gb of roms at the moment with more expected to be added, and would rather not have to readd them or keep a backup elsewhere for if/when I wipe the sd card for future Retropie images. Also, no microsd card on the planet can hold all of the Playstation One images. A potential side effect is the external hdd is faster than the microsd, but I couldn’t tell you if it has made a difference.

When I was searching for how to keep my roms on the hdd, it seemed to be fairly commonplace.

I bought 2 playstation clone controllers from ebay (china) with a usb wi-fi stick. They don’t react at all in emulationstation. Tried to install xbox wi-fi controller drivers but that didn’t help. Anyone have an idea how to get them to work? Or maybe they are not compatible? I couldn’t also get my wi-fi dongle to work.

We don’t permanently mount usb drives by default do we ? the usbromservice mounts and syncs roms, but to mount permanently you need to add an entry yourself to fstab right ? unless I’ve missed something ?

Hey guys, i have an issue with Mame.

Everything is on my Pi and all the games work fine, however the problem lies with the character selection screen.

I have set up all my buttons on a usb controller with no duplicates.. Including the “add coins” and player 1 Start etc.

I have noticed on The Simpsons and Turtles so far…

I think the game is set up to give each controller its own character, ie..
Player 1 = Marge
Player 2 = Homer
Player 3 = Bart
Player 4 = Lisa
Its the same with turtles..
I have no problem adding coins to any of the characters, the problem lies with the selection.
Once adding coins, “press start” appears above each of character.
And when i hit start, it always gives me in this case Marge, as she is under player 1..

I am guessing that the original arcade cabinets had 4 sets of controllers that you’d just jump to, to select the character you wanted?

Has anyone had any issues with any multi character games?
And is there away around the character selection screen?

Thanks.

I discovered the Retropie project recently on Lifehacker (http://lifehacker.com/how-to-turn-your-raspberry-pi-into-a-retro-game-console-498561192) and have been trying to get it set up. I’ve been looking at a number of resources and I haven’t been able to figure this out.

I’m trying to get EmulationStation to run.

So far, I’ve:

1. Installed the RetroPie image onto my formatted SD card
2. Expanded the filesystem
3. Attempted to configure my controllers (https://github.com/retropie/RetroPie-Setup/wiki/RetroArch-Configuration) (I don’t know if it worked and I don’t have a way it testing it.)
4. Successfully transferred a ROM to the Pi using a USB stick

I’m trying to play the game now, and am having trouble getting EmulationStation running. How do you run it? Is there a command? From what I’ve read it looks like it should run automatically when you reboot the Pi. When I reboot it, I see the RetroPie splash screen, and then it spits me back out on the command line.

In short: How do I run EmulationStation?

Found the problem. Following a post by user dplcc68, I found out that Retropie does not give exec privileges to mounted drives. Solved it by issuing a “sudo mount -o remount rw,exec,users,auto /media/usb”. I’m going to add a bug report to git.

I’ve got a similar project going, but I didn’t think to remove the USB and Ethernet jacks. I thought if I cut slots out for them that the Pi2 would fit, but the solder tips on the bottom of the PCB make it so I’m about 2-3mm too tight inside the SNES cart.
I wish they sold a Pi2 with single height USB jacks.
Any update on yours? I’d love to see the end result of how you got everything to fit.

If you want to do it the easy way and just for retroarch-emulators, just try
sudo ./Retropie-Setup/retropie_setup.sh
and choose “Register retroarch controller”.

after you configured it, this should be your first gamepad for retroarch-emulators.

If you want to do this for more than one Controller, you’ll have to set the gamepadindexes in the retroarch.cfg:
sudo nano /opt/retropie/configs/all/retroarch.cfg
and then watch out for the lines like
Input_player1_index=0

so you could Change this to the corresponding Controller (I think they’re numbered by the USB-ports they’re plugged in at boot, so left upper is 0, left downer is 1, right upper 2 and right downer 3).

Do not try to set up a player 1 and player 2 using the index method in some posts here, that is when my controls quit working.

Edit the configuration file below for only 1 player. It seems player 2 gets duplicated to the exact button layout. Make sure your button wiring for both controllers are mirrored copies of each other.

input_device = "THT THT Arcade console 2P USB Player"
input_driver = "udev"

#Player 1&2P

input_b_btn = "1"
input_y_btn = "0"
input_select_btn = "8"
input_start_btn = "9"
input_up_axis = "-1"
input_down_axis = "+1"
input_left_axis = "-0"
input_right_axis = "+0"
input_a_btn = "3"
input_x_btn = "2"
input_l_btn = "4"
input_r_btn = "5"

input_enable_hotkey_btn = "9"
input_exit_emulator_btn = "8"

Put the edited file in /opt/retropie/emulators/retroarch/configs named THTTHTArcadeconsole2PUSBPlayer.cfg, for some reason the Xin MO gets named that.

Hope this helps.

Thank you for this detailed how-to. I changed the following:

Used /etc/init.d/bluetooth and /etc/defaults/bluetooth from the Debian jessie package:
https://packages.debian.org/jessie/bluez (the .tar.xz file on the right)

With DAEMON= in /etc/init.d/bluetooth pointing to /usr/libexec/bluetooth/bluetoothd.

Added this line to /etc/rc.local:
hciconfig hci0 up pscan

When running bluetoothctl I could trust each controller after plugging it into USB without actually pairing it. Though I had to remove all devices at some point and start over. I think it’s important to disconnect one controller before trusting the next one.

To have the controllers disconnect after 15 minutes of idling I created /etc/bluetooth/input.conf from the Debian package above. But since the axis always send some data it seems it won’t disconnect after all.

And I get js0 and js1 in /dev/input/. After I disconnect one controller (holding PS button >12 sec) and pair a third one I get:

But inside /dev/input I still only have js0 and js1.

Here is a photo of my first project case for retropie. Although a tight fit, all components except a hard drive will fit. This one features working PSX ports and 4 additional USB ports at the front using a USB hub. My final version ended up with the yellow inserts being recut out of the same colour plastic as the console to match.
