I have a question or 2 on this new 7″ touch screen for the Pi.

1. Can the PowerBlock be used with this?
2. Can a USB NES controller work or do you HAVE to use the touch screen? I’d like to think it would work all the same but I’m just hoping some has some experience with it.

Thanks all.

Hi,
I’m relatively new to this project, but recently purchased an iPAC2 USB controller running Emulation Station and Retropie. I have two problems that I would like some advice please:

1. (MAME for all) For some reason buttons 5 and 6 (Player 2) don’t work on 6 button games like SF2. FYI, All 6 buttons work fine on Player 1. I’ve read somewhere that there could be a conflict with the hotkeys?, but have no idea how to get into this feature?. I have the latest version of Retropie.

2. Player 2 doesn’t acknowledge on most of the consoles i.e. SN and Megadrive.

FYI I was looking for a non programming project so I don’t have much knowledge on programming pi’s, but happy to learn a few lines if it will help resolve this issue.

My iPAC2 is set to the default keys i.e. buttons 5 and 6 are currently set to buttons ‘I’ and ‘K’

Appreciate any help here.

Ok then so bad news first – I have tried and tried and tried all weekend to build a working ‘USB Install’ version of NOOBS that is compatible with the Pi 3 but have hit a brick wall every time – I just cant get it to build. I have added every dependency listed on the Github page along with many more that I read in the various ‘issues’ log but to no avail (and it takes a good few hours each time to get to the failure point!). I’m at a loss so I will raise an issue on the Github page for the USB build however I don’t think it has been maintained in a while so Im not sure if or when a fix will be implemented for this specific build to support the Pi 3. :(

So after much tinkering I have found a dirty workaround to get Pi 3 support up and running and it seems to work ok (aside from a NOOBS error message – more on that below!). Please do note however that this is not an official build of NOOBS I am using so use it at your own risk until an official ‘USB stick version’ becomes available.

Ok then – with that aside I have made a couple of builds and they are ready to download – see below:

RetroPie 3.6 & OpenELEC 6.0.3: Click here
* 3 skins set up to use: Arctic Zephyr (default)
Aeon Nox (for nostalgia! ;) )
Xonfluence (for those who can’t sway from the ‘vanilla’ skin)
PLEASE NOTE you can not switch to Xonfluence skin from the Arctic Zephyr skin – no idea why but it just doesn’t work so switch to Aeon Nox first and then switch to Xonfluence and you’re good to go. A minor annoyance.

RetroPie 3.6 & OSMC 2016.02-3: Click here
Only the standard skin is set up for OSMC

These are both Raspberry Pi 2 / 3 builds and seem to be working fine at my end. Please feel free to try them out and let me know how you get on.

I have bought some web space at last (website is very wip but feel free to have a gander!) so I am hosting these files using my webspace rather than Google Drive, MEGA etc. Hopefully that will work out better but let me know if not and I can upload elsewhere.

All the best.
Steve

p.s. Rasplex and a Triple is next on the list.
Hi Steve,

Thanks a lot for creating these multi-boot images. Greatly appreciated.

I’m just wondering, is there any possibility to include Volumio as another OS that we can switch to?

The current stable version is v1.55. FYI, version 2 is in beta stage.

If this can be done, it will be an ultimate entertainment machine.

Thanks.

Cheers,
YungYaw
Hi. Its on my todo list so I will certainly give it a try yes! I have never used Volumio before so not sure if it supports running script shortcuts etc. but if it does then it shouldn’t be a problem, in theory.
Amazing project! I am looking to migrate my exisitng openelec setup to this openelec/retropie dual boot. In the past I have kept all my openelec data as backup, by copying the whole “storage” partition. When I tried to do this with the dual boot sd card, I couldn’t find any kind of folder structure that was familiar to me, ie no storage and boot partitions. I know they are there somewhere, because when I ssh into openelec I can see them. However how can I access them when I connect the sd card to my laptop?

Thank you very much

PS: Is this openelec setup working with plexbmc?
Hmmm that is strange because the folder structure should be exactly the same aside from the storage and boot partitions will be numbered differently. Are you trying to view your SD card on a Windows machine? If so then you will only see the boot partition as that is the only ‘FAT’ formatted partition on the card. You’d need a Linux machine to view the other EXT4 partitions where the KODI data is held (or you can use a program to view and backup from within Windows).

Plexbmc should work fine for this, however I have never tried it.
hey guys im new to this can anybody help me im trying to add my snes roms, do i add them to my sd card or to the usb drive help please
Hi.

You add your roms onto the SD card but to do this you will need to either SSH into your Pi or use a Linux PC to transfer them directly onto the SD card. I think you can also use a memory stick and it will transfer the roms automatically for you, but I have never tried this myself (have a search through the Wiki guide and Im sure it will explain in better detail than me). Good luck!

Hi,

I can’t get my device to work. I tried adding the udev rule and the cmdline.txt usb quirk but nothing changed.
I wonder, what is the string that should be used in the udev rule to identify the device ? My device does not seem to have the same name than the one i see on different topics when searching Google.
For example, its name in “lsusb” is… empty:

Bus 001 Device 002: ID 0424:9514 Standard Microsystems Corp.
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 001 Device 003: ID 0424:ec00 Standard Microsystems Corp.
Bus 001 Device 004: ID 413c:1010 Dell Computer Corp.
Bus 001 Device 005: ID 0314:0328
Bus 001 Device 007: ID 7392:7811 Edimax Technology Co., Ltd EW-7811Un 802.11n Wireless Adapter [Realtek RTL8188CUS]
Bus 001 Device 006: ID 413c:2110 Dell Computer Corp.

Here is the full output of “lsusb -v”: http://pastebin.com/54jvby3W
Notice this:

iManufacturer 1 D_R_M
iProduct 2 JUYAO Dual Arcade

I’ll try with the following udev rule to match with the name of my device:
ATTRS{name}=="JUYAO Dual Arcade",ACTION=="add",ENV{ID_INPUT_TABLET}="0",ENV{ID_INPUT_JOYSTICK}:="1"

Edit: still no luck with this one :(
Any idea ?

Is there still the problem in the new jessy with setting up wifi & bluetooth dongles as well as the time not automatically updating? Since the last build we had to install/update those settings.
i’m not certain if it’s valid for usb thumbdrives but there is a setting that you can place in config.txt to give the usb ports their maximum current (1200 instead of 600 i think it was) the setting is the following : max_usb_current=1

i had some problems with harddisk (not thumbdrives) that did not get enough power to boot up or stay booted up that setting “can” help. Also a good power supply is especially needed.

on side note i’m currently using my old ps3 phat 80 drive in an enclosure with my pi and that setting is not needed with this drive it was with 2 other drives i tried.

not sure if it would make a diffrence though but you could try it once.

Also watch out if you overclock and enable that setting it might be your pi becomes unstable while it was not before without that setting. Have read some issues about this but could be it’s a powering problem as well then.

I am not thinking of overclocking. I like to work within the boundaries of the “Vanilla Pi3” but the max_usb_current=1 will not void warranty right?

The USB stick works as one would expect, it mounts and everything it is just very slow (currently copying a PSX .pbp file at 1.8mbyte per second) while I am sure the internal SD could hit 8 to 10.

I am just curious what causes this. I would expect a Sandisk USB3 stick to not be the bottleneck and that the max USB2 throughput would, if anything, be the culprit.

All your points are valid, I did not expect ext4 to make a big difference but thought I’d ask.

I wouldn’t expect the USB power to be a problem either but would love some feedback if that is the case.
To quickly add a question to this thread:

I use my USB3 Stick formatted as FAT32 and I find the performance to be rather poor (1.5mbyte per second) as opposed to the internal SD (8 to 10mbyte per second) when transferring files.

I could imagine it being a BIT slower but even when reading games I notice that, for example, PS1 titles just take that little longer to load (the transitions in Symphony of the Night being most notable).

Is it because it is formatted as FAT32 and would formatting it as ext4 work better?
Am I missing something?
I’m no hardware or file system expert, but I don’t think formatting your drive to another file system would greatly improve speed. The thumbdrive might be of another “class” than the SD card you have (may very old USB thumbsticks be compared to class 2 SD cards?). Power might be the issue too. I can hardly transfer files via WiFi to my Pi but I know that the dongle is not thát bad. Also, everybody always advises to use a powered USB hub when connecting peripherals. That’s not for nothing I think…

I was wondering if anyone was able to get a PS3 working over bluetooth for PiFBA. I configured pifba/fba2x.cfg file properly for the PS3 controller using jtest. It works fine when plugged in with the USB cable (which is the same button config as bluetooth according to jtest), but not bluetooth. The PS3 controller works fine via bluetooth on all the emulators, just not PiFBA. Not sure if it is possible but just curious if anyone was able to successfully get it working. I am using Raspberry Pi 2 with RetroPie 3.6 and the bluetooth adapter ASUS USB‑BT400. Any thoughts?

Just went through the same issue of trying to get the DPAD on my generic usb ps3 controller to work with dreamcast/reicast. It may be different for your setup but if I remember correctly this is what I did to finally get mine working;

Select the Dreamcast emulator from the frontend > start > menu > configure options input

then go through the whole setting up of your controller again, this will write to configs/dreamcast/mappings/nameofyourcontroller.cfg

This should by right map all your controller inputs to the .cfg file but somehow the DPAD and analog stick isn’t mapped and the entries are blank on mine.

Within the configs/dreamcast/mappings/ folder there is a controller_generic.cfg from which I copied and saved these entries over to my .cgf file.

btn_dpad1_down = 0x223
axis_x = 0x00

The games I have tested working are:

Gunbird 2
Incoming
Marvel vs Capcom 1 and 2
MDK2
Tech Romancer

Only problem is the sound is choppy on my RPi2, just got my RPi3 today and will see how they run on that. Good luck with your controller setting. If you get your controller working let us know.

I started out wanting to retrofit an existing stick, but then scrapped that idea and just used the hardware in a wooden case.
I’m getting the power from the Neutrik USB port next to the HDMI on top of the case. It’s USB B on the outside and USB A on the inside. I then have a short USB A to Micro USB cable on the inside giving power to the pi.
I made a board on the inside that has all the button connectors from the original stick mounted on some breadboard and then uses a ribbon cable to connect to the GPIO pins on the pi. All the buttons have four wires because of the LEDs so keeping the existing connectors was easiest.

I am doing something like this, but i will be retrofitting a fightstick i own with controller board and Pi.
I am curious about your USB-B power solution. I have ordered a mountable USB-B -> Micro USB to power the Pi. But I am unsure whether the internal cable or aftermarket Usb B cable can support up to 2.4 amps? can you shed som lights on if there are any power issues?

am thinking of upgrading my Pi1 B+ to a Pi3 and it would be a bummer if I need to get new cables.

I’m having the same trouble. Pi3 RP3.6 new setup. PS3 controller wont configure buttons after up and down. Tried to install the PS3 drivers from the command line, following a video on YouTube. Still doesnt seem to work. I did manange to get it to connect (1 solid red light on controlller), but disconnects again when I remove the USB cable.

So, I have been using a Live Linux with USB to do all my SSH… I stumbled upon a site that had a windows version of OpenSSH.

I am happy to say that I was able to log in to my Pi 1 B with no issues except forgetting the default password once.

Here is a screen shot to show it… the command once SSH is installed is ssh (user)@(host)

I did everything elevated so that I don’t deal with permission issues

My kid was playing SNES (snes9x) and when I came back in the room it seemed my nes and SNES emulators are all screwed up. For SNES when I got start alone, it kicks me out of the game, like when you hit select and start together. And with nes, if I as soon as I launch a game, it quits back to the retropie game select screen. I don’t know what happened, the Genesis emulator is acting fine.nis there a way to reset individual emulators or some way to fix this. I already remapped my SNES usb controller with no avail.

i posted that in another thread already but i can confirm this:

2 different ps3 controller tested on:

upgraded retropie 3.6 on
pi2: usb = working
pi3 usb = working (kind of) / bluetooth working
(on the pi3 i have random issues with system freezes only when the ps3 controller is connected via usb, but that might only be a problem of my upgraded install, didn’t figure that out yet)

fresh install of 3.6 on
Pi2: usb not working
Pi3: usb not working / bluetooth working perfectly
