I figured that this would be the best place to ask…

I have RetroPie running nicely on a Raspberry Pi 2 B, and so far, I’ve managed to learn how to do everything I wanted to do, but there’s one thing that baffles me. I downloaded Kodi from the Experimental menu, and I even created a EmulationStation icon for it, but I can’t seem to get the software to recognize my USB drive.

My USB drive is plugged in, but when I try to add a source folder, my drive doesn’t show up! Any idea what I’m doing wrong? Does it need to be formatted a certain way?

Thanks for your help!

Hey guys,
i am configuring retropi only over ssh since i dont have an usb keyboard. Since 3.0 n64 emulators use the same rom folder. libretro emulator is set as the standard emulator and it can be modified pressing x or m on emulator start. Since i dont have a keyboard i cannot enter this menu. How can i change the settings over ssh. Or is there a simple way to access this using my laptop keyboard?

Hi everyone, first the summary:

Pi Model: 2 B
RetroPie Version Used: 3.0 Beta 2
Built From: SD Image
USB Devices connected: 4x Buffalo Classic USB Gamepad through 4 port Rosewill powered USB Hub Canakit wifi dongle, Microsoft USB Keyboard are plugged directly into the RP, with a Microsoft mouse plugged into 1 of the 2 USB ports on the keyboard.
Controller used: 4x Buffalo Classic USB Gamepad

How to replicate the problem:

Run Super Bomberman 5 on lr-snes9x-next (or previous versions of the core), it will freeze audio at the menu, but video will keep going until you press any key, and then video will freeze also.

or

Run Super Bomberman 4 on lr-snes9x-next(or previous versions of the core), it will freeze audio and video during the intro cinematic.

I’m building an emu box for my friend’s birthday. The most important game, the one he will want to play is Super Bomberman 5 for SNES (with Super Bomberman 4 being a close second), with 4 people at a time.

I’ve tested Mario Kart 64 with all 4 controllers, and apart from garbled textures and unreadable menus, all 4 people can play once we hit the actual race track!
Also, running Castlevania SOTN and Parasite Eve for PS1 just fine, and very impressed by retropie in general, so awesome.

Here is my problem: Every version of Snes9x I’ve tried on retropie has crashed at the menu for SB5 (and even earlier in SB4). All other SNES cores I’ve tried do not have this problem, however I can’t get more than 2 controllers working for them. I got multitap support working for Snes9x via adding this line to /opt/retropie/configs/snes/retroarch.cfg:

input_libretro_device_p2 = “257”

As per astorek86’s post here:

Multi tap support

Adding that line did not enable multitap in any other snes cores on my system, even the other ones which start with lr_. I have searched through all of the configs and sparse documentation for the other cores to see if there is some way to enable multitap, but haven’t found anything.

I’ve used rom editing software to try adding/removing headers, applying general ‘fixes’, overdump trimming, etc etc, I’ve had SB5 and SB4 rom files on the operating table for about 2 hours, but nothing helped. These games were never released outside of Japan, and perhaps use some special internals. All the other cores can run them though, and so can every x86 version of ZSNES and Snes9x that I ever used on Windows. I tried using DOS ZSNES through DOSBox on RetroPie, but it ran the game too slow to be playable, no surprise. I’ve also tried many different versions of the roms, in case some were damaged or corrupt or something. But again, they do run great on other SNES cores.

At this point it seems like getting multitap to work on a core other than snes9x is my best bet. It seems that several Japan Only Bomberman games have quirks, as per the changelog for CATSFC:

– Panic Bomberman World requires SPC700 memory to be initialised to zero on
reset otherwise the game hangs when a tune finishes and another one should
start.

– Panic Bomber World, Bomberman 4 and UFO Kamen Yakisoban all need the slower
SPC700 timing.

https://github.com/ShadauxCat/CATSFC/blob/master/source/changes.txt

I do not have any error logs or crash dumps from Snes9x, because I don’t know where they are or how to access them. I’ve looked for this info but haven’t found it. If anyone can help me locate this info, I would be happy to post it, but at this point it may be easier to find a way to get multitap working on other SNES cores.

Thanks for reading, and any ideas you have!

One thing I haven’t been able to figure out:

In order to start emulationstation, I first have to start the x server and then logout. Otherwise emulationstation crashes immediately upon startup, like the usb drive is not loaded until I start the x server.

Anyone know how to get the usb drive to load upon startup rather than needing to login to the x server?

I did js0 and js1 and got a result of

js0 = Generic Xbox controller
js1 = Harmonix Xbox 360 Controller

Not really sure why since it’s the same controller? Do you think it probably due to it not being supported?

using the lsusb
Bus 001 Device 006: ID 1bad:f900 Harmonix Music

On reboot i get
js0 = Generic Xbox controller
js1 = Generic Xbox controller

Hello everyone, I am brand new to emulators and I had a couple of questions. I went through the Retropie install and everything went very smoothly. But if I play anything more advanced than NES, even some NES games sound is very poor, the game is very choppy sound and video. N64 is completely unplayable due to lag. I am not sure if these could be bad ROM’s that I downloaded or some other issue. Current setup is:

Pi Model:B+
RetroPie Version Used: 3.0.0 Beta
Built From: SD Image
USB Devices connected: Keyboard
Controller used: Xbox 360 remote (2x)

THanks in advance for any help.

But how do you configure the controller ??? I have the exact same setup – Mayflash 2x SNES to USB adapter. I can get it to work in the menu of EmulationStation, but NOT when I launch a emulator.

I have NOT configured anything for the SNES emulator, because I do NOT know where I configure it!??

Please help me.

Thanks for taking the time. I am a total noob, like less than a week having my raspberry pi 2. I am running the newest retropie beta for the pi 2. Everything works fine with my ps3 controller. But my project for the arcade cabinet is the goal. Got my joystick set up from ebay

http://www.ebay.com/itm/2-Player-USB-mame-arcade-parts-kit-includes-2-joysticks-16-Happ-buttons-/171068993508

figured going off other plans would work great. Plug everything up as a test and configure with the emulastionstaion everthing seemed to be working up, down, left and so on. Went to the menu in retropie for the retroarch joystick config did the same thing. Went to launch NES mario bro. and nothing. I can hit one button and it makes me jump. Joystick does not let me move. I can also pause and exit using a two button combo to get back to emulations station. So WTF. tried a different emulator same thing. I tried MAME and was able to map the joystick and buttons to play galaga and worked left,right, and fire. So exited and went back to NES, see at the bottom it still sees the controller, and still can only jump.

So any help would be greatly appreciated, I tried google last night for about four hours and saw some similar issues or for all I know the exact issue and I just don’t see it, because I am a total noob. Not sure if I have the newest version 4, I believe its 3 but some of the commands I tried last night could of updated maybe not sure. The reason I am also using the beta ver is I could not get the 2.6 one to work with my wifi and read that the beta had a idiot proof setup. If you can help can u please dumb it way down for me

Thanks

What type of controller is it? How is it connected (via usb/ via bluetooth/ wireless receiver)? YOu say re-plug which suggests its just a wired USB but then you say ‘doesn’t get recognized properly’ which suggests the controller itself is giving some kind of power indication?

If its occasionally is it always in the same USB port it fails? Does it fail on all of them?

have you also checked the JS inputs? Perhaps if it is recognized but you cannot use it its because its not on the index you are expecting.

The specific problem I was solving was when I was using 3-4 controllers but it would be a mixture of wired and wireless. Normally one wired xbox controller and 3 wireless via a receiver. If you had a wired and a single wireless controller they were always on js0 and js1. But once I’d added more the js numbers changed their starting point.

The idea with that udev rule is it forces the controllers to ALWAYS go from 0-3 (like your usb ones) regardless of how many are wired or wireless. Obviously you still need configs stating the index for each player (if necessary). Anyway it works fine for me and has done since I ‘resolved’ this. I can play 4 player mario kart for example with an array of controllers. I may have missed something entirely which is why I’ve had to do this but yeah…works so I don’t care :)
Hey Doug!

I use this setup for my system. All my ROMS are on a USB thumbdrive with my microSD card holding only my retropie/kodi system files.

I edit the es_systems.cfg file by Puttying in with:

sudo nano /etc/emulationstation/es_systems.cfg

I then make the necessary changes to the systems that need to look on the USB stick for roms.

My <file> syntax looks like this (for SNES anyway):

<file>/media/usb0/retropie/snes</file>

and then CNTL+X, ‘yes’, and then hit enter.

Of course on my USB drive I have, at root, a directory called retropie (which by the way is automatically created when USB service is turned on). And then inside retropie I have the various system folders – snes, nes, gba, etc…

One issue I had was when changing the directories in the es_systems.cfg file, I inadvertently left the default tilde (~) in the file path. The tilde tells retropie to start looking in the home directory on your SD card. Delete it and you’re good to go!

You may also want to double check where retropie thinks your USB drive is mounted. Mine happened to be at location usb0… but depending on what you have hooked up this could be anywhere between usb0-usb7.

Type:
/media/usb0
ls

If your retropie folder shows up then usb0 it is… if not, continue by pressing the UP arrow twice, delete the ‘0’ and type 1, hit enter, type ls. Continue changing the number at the end of usb until you find where your USB drive is mounted… but my guess in that it’s sitting at usb0.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for your reply and i used putty but as before when i go to save the file it tells me no such file or Dictionary ? . i cant get my head around it and been trying as 2 days with no luck in getting the file saved .

I don’t know how related this is as I don’t own an Xbox controller but I’ve found that player order for my controllers is determined where they are plugged in the USB as follows:

I just checked before you posted and I am not getting the yellow text on booting up a game as I do on all the other RA emulators, even though the controls work in game and in the RGUI input settings it has the USB,2-axis8-buttongamepad listed as the device type.

Yes, this is a RetroPie 3.0 beta 2 image downloaded from this site.

EDIT: Changed fba RetroArch config text to: # include “/opt/retropie/configs/all/retroarch.cfg” and unfortunately that did not do anything either.

So, we can see that as the yellow text is not appearing on start up it is not finding the gamepad config file that the other RetroArch emulators use. Is it using some other file?

Have we exhausted all possibilities at this stage and should an issue be opened on github for RetroPie Setup or is this an upstream issue?

I wonder how yours is finding the correct gamepad config. These roms are all running on lr-fba using the FB Alpha v0.2.97.30 romset

First off thanks for the great project.

I had my controller working just fine in Beta 2 then I updated to Beta 4. I did the controller configuration and now my controller is not working.

When doing the joystick setup it sees the button presses and writes the config file to /opt/retropie/configs/all/retroarch-joypads/THTTHTArcadeconsole2PUSBPlayer.cfg

What step am I skipping/missing?

‘a’ was one of the buttons I tried pressing and even holding. It never goes any further. I’ve waited 5+ min looking for any type of change. The screen even went into powersave mode waiting for progress to continue. This applies to both the keyboard and the USB gamepad.

I’m using this gamepad, one of the reviewers said specifically it worked with retropi, that’s why I got it.

I got a problem, it’s my first time using retropi. I downloaded v3 beta 4 as the newest version. I got the image flashed to the raspberry pi b+. It boots, starts emulationstation and starts the configuration setup. So far so good, all the videos I’ve seen have been exactly what I see.

It then shows 1 gamepad dectected and to hold the button to configure. I start to press a button and it highlights at the bottom “USB Gamepad” I then hold down the button for about 3-5 seconds like all the tutorials say to do.

This is where things go different from everything I read and seen. A little box saying ‘OK’ shows up at the bottom and nothing happens. I’ve let it sit for quite some time. Hitting random buttons, holding random buttons… nothing.

Redownloaded, flashed, same thing. Downloaded torrent, flashed, same thing. SDcard is fine as it works with a ‘regular’ debian image. I tried using just the keyboard with no gamepad, nothing. Tried running from command line the retropi-setup.sh and configureing the controller there. That breaks emulationstation and makes the screen go all flashy the next go round.

Why is this happening? How can I fix this?

Hi,

Just in case I will also add that I had recent trouble saving PSX.

The issue was that I was running games from my USB and the saves/loads were defulted to my roms folder on the USB. Because there were no permissions set to write the saves/loads would not work.

What I ended up doing was creating a folder called saves in Home/pi/saves.

I then edited my retroarch.cfg for each system to direct saves and loads to this folder and everything is great.

Can you run this once more?

grep -rnw ‘/opt/retropie/emulators/retroarch/configs/’ -e “USB,2-axis 8-button gamepad”

And I’m assumign your fba retroarch.cfg file is just

#include "/opt/retropie/configs/all/retroarch.cfg"
# All settings made here will override the global settings for the current emulator core
input_remapping_directory = /opt/retropie/configs/fba/

I’m using an Xbox ONE controller for Windows, plugged in with USB. The ocnfig also works if you are adding a second controller and use the _player2_ portion of the config. My second controller is a hard wired PS3 controller. I just used wired as I don’t feel like playing with all the Bluetooth configurations.

Could you run this:
ls -lahrt /opt/retropie/emulators/retroarch/configs/*USB*

It should return 2 files

remove the one that is oldest (datestamp)
You can use the rm command for that.

Yes, I mean lr-fba Neo Geo from the Neo Geo menu as opposed to FBA and not with PiFBA.

I typed in the above command and it lists 3 config files as follows:

/opt/retropie/emulators/retroarch/configs/USB,2-axis8-buttongamepad.cfg:1:input_device = "USB,2-axis 8-button gamepad  "

/opt/retropie/emulators/retroarch/configs/iBuffalo_ClassicUsb_Gamepad.cfg:1:input_device = "USB,2-axis 8-button gamepad"

/opt/retropie/emulators/retroarch/configs/USB,2-axis_8-button_gamepad.cfg:1:input_device = "USB,2-axis 8-button gamepad  "

For some reason when I access the RetroPie console to enter commands I keep getting ~ entered in on my lines. Its driving me nuts! One question I would ask if it perhaps has anything to do with the keyboard setting. Im using a standard USB keyboard, what is the best setting for that in RetroPie, I saw a ton of presets but I wasn’t sure what to pick. Also for some reason in .cfg files all the options are ^X or ^C if that has anything to do with the issue.

Im running a Pi2 B and retro 3.0 2

Hi.

I have purchased a Mayflash SNES to USB Gamepad. And 2 original SNES controllers.

Have read up and down on internet and watched movies on Youtube on how to map controller for EmulationStation. I can get it to work as menu controller (i configured it in ES and it just works).
But when I fire up a Emulator i.e. SNES emulator – nothing works!

I have also tried to configure with the RetroPie_setup.sh and using RetroArch controller – but it does not recognize any of the Button pushes (is this because it only reads USB controllers?).

Please help me! Im new to the whole Rasp PI stuff, so I need explanations.

Thank you for any comments and help. Very much appreciated.

I am building a “mini-arcade” built around an iCade and a raspberry pi. I want to add a “touch sensor” button, which is sold by sparkfun.com and is based on the AT42QT1010. I am interfacing the joystick/buttons using a “zero delay” USB encoder I bought off eBay.

Question is, can the digital output signal be used by the USB encoder, or do I need to connect the output directly to the GPIO? I read somewhere that pin 5 already has a pull up resistor on it. It seems every pi tutorial on buttons involves lighting an LED; all I want to do is read the button push.

appreciate any help!

Hey all, I installed beta 2, and my gamepad worked perfectly. I bought a larger SD card, and installed beta 3 fresh. Configured my gamepad in emulatorstation and retropie setup with no issues. In emulatorstation, all directions and buttons work, however in all the emulators all buttons work, but directions don’t. I’ve re-ran the setup in both areas multiple times with no change. Could anyone offer some assistance?

Hello everyone,

I use for some time Retropie v3.0 beta 3 and I would like to add new emulator for zx spectrum and make it default.
Retropie comes with two built-in emulators fbzx and fuse (default), but for me the best emulator “Unreal Speccy Portable” is not present.
I downloaded an emulator here https://bitbucket.org/djdron/unrealspeccyp/downloads/unreal-speccy-portable_0.0.64_rpi.zip

unpacked and put together with the others in /opt/retropie/emulators/usp
Then edited the emulator.cfg file in /opt/retropie/configs/zxspectrum adding a line usp=”/opt/retropie/emulator/usp/unreal_speccy_portable %ROM%” and set default =”usp”
Unfortunately, the emulator is not working when I started a game, just came back in emulationstation menu.
I also tried to make a script +Start USP.sh that will start the emulator manually from es menu (as uae4all for example) but this also failed, because obviously I’m not well-configured parameters.
The only way to start the emulator is to press F4 and go to the terminal, then manually change the emulator directory and start it with ./unreal_speccy_portable

Also, maybe I should set the es_systems.cfg file but did not know what.

Can someone help me set this emulator as the default, or at least that it can start from emulationstation menu and be able to use it comfortably as other emulators.
I exhausted my modest knowledge of retropie package and linux and I would like to solve this problem.
Sorry for my bad english, best regards.
