Is it possible to pairing ps3 controllers via blutooth without using a usb cable at any reboot of the system?

Hi – I’m running a Raspberry Pi 2 with Retropie 3.2. Updated/upgraded all software. When playing, I’m receiving about 50-100ms of input lag, which makes NES/SNES/Genesis/etc games unplayable.

Running on a Samsung LCDTV with “Game Mode” on – which reduces the refresh rate to ~2ms. Never had an issue with any other systems running on game mode – Xbox One, 360, Wii U. This appears to be isolated to the Retropie setup. Any tips on decreasing input lag? Using wired USB controllers.

I’m trying to get an old, PS2-era X-Arcade unit running, and have posted in another thread.

It *seems* to be recognized at the OS level, but I can’t seem to get things working within Emulation Station.

When I try to configure from the main Emulation Station menu, the program basically doesn’t recognize any of the actions that can be taken on the X-Arcade. I can get to the Configure Input by using the attached PS2 keyboard (through the XArcade) or through a USB keyboard attached directly to the Pi.

When I hold down a key on the X-Arcade, it recognizes it as “Keyboard”. But it does NOT recognize an “Up” motion on either joystick.

IS there manual mapping that can/should be done through one of the cfg files? What am I missing?

    Many thanks.

I would love to have some more information on this. I am a novice relative to retropie, the pi and Linux in general, so I am grateful for your patience and grace.

I have the same, PS2, nontrackball X-Arcade box and the OP.

I’m concerned that the wiring may NOT allow proper configuration. I’m attaching a picture showing a PS2 keyboard plugged into the X-Arcade, the X-Arcade plugged into an X-Arcade Adapter via serial cable, and the X-Arcade Adapter plugged into the pi via USB.

I’ve tried to configure from the main emulation station window with:

    – X-Arcade only
    – X-Arcade plugged in via USB and another keyboard plugged in via USB
    – The configuration shown (X-Arcade plugged in via usb and a PS2 keyboard plugged in to the X-Arcade)

In each case, the Emulation Station recognizes “Keyboard” but does NOT “see” simple things like pushing either joystick UP.

Before I spend more time on configuration, is there anyone who can either validate or refute the possibility of this scenario?

I’m not opposed to buying the $35 USB controller, but would like to hack together the available bits if possible.

Many thanks to all of you for so generously sharing your experience and knowledge.

I been trying to get the snes controller to work in n64 but can’t seem to get it working.I’ve tried playing around with the configs but always end up having to do over the image. It works in the main menu but not in the n64 games. Is there a way to rectify this problem, also I would like “start+select” as exit.
I would very much appreciate any assistance.
Also, what are some CHEAP alternative that can play with all the emulators and easy to setup (auto if possible)?? Both USB and Wireless options.

    Thanks in advance.

    Hello!

New user here. I did a fresh install after completing a setup of 3.0 RetroPie a month or so ago. I wanted to start over from the beginning and try to clean up some things from my first go around. One thing I noticed with 3.2.1 is the PS3 pairing was a breeze. I merely plugged in my JBTek Bluetooth dongle and booted up the image for the first time. I ran the PS3 controller driver installation from the Setup. After the driver was installed, and it gave the text to unplug the USB and pair, I did exactly that. I unplugged the controller and pushed the PS button. It paired almost immediately.

Is it giving you an error? Do you see the message that tells you to unplug and pair the controller? It should be as simple as pushing the PS button and let it do its magic. I also had to modify the Bluetooth setting with 3.0 to keep scanning to allow two controllers to pair. This was not the case for 3.2.1. I paired both controllers after the first installation.

Sorry if I misunderstood and this doesn’t answer your question. If not give a bit more detail of the point at which you are stuck. Have a pleasant day!

Sorry I should have supplied a bit more info. I’m using a Pi2 with an overclock of 1000MHz CPU and 450MHz Core.

I’ve tried using both the A500 and A1200 presets and also tried changing up some other CPU/RAM settings.

I checked the github for UEA4ALL2 and the last bit of development was March this year. It would be great to get USB joy pad (Buffalo Snes pad in my case) being able to control the GUI.

    Hi MRKane,

Thanks for the very positive feedback, it’s great to hear.

Regarding voltage, I’m using a well-built 2Amp psu, with in-built cable – As you note, this is critical for the Pi to work reliably, especially when overclocking. I wrote a blog post on the importance of the PSU, and some information regarding the quality of usb cables:

Looking after your Pi – Part 1 – The Importance of a Quality Power Supply (PSU)

The hardware I’m using is detailed in this post:

    Hello,

I am using Retropie 3.2.1 and have got 2 x USB wireless xbox controllers working is ES and jtest seems to work fine too. Now the issue I have is I go into the Retroarch GUI for example in the Megadrive emulator and to input player 1 and try and set up the controls but none of the buttons register, for example I select button b using my keyboard and hit the b button on the Xbox controller and nothing happens.

It says the driver is using the Xbox driver too.

    Start with a fresh image?

Hello Smithers, Keep up the great work. I have a few issues with some of my arcade roms not working.. But not that big of a deal… just wrong rom set i’m sure..

I was wanting you and others know that i have your dual boot image v8 on a 64-gig sd card.. I think this will be helpful for people wanting to get a bigger sd card for there Smithers Dual Boot image v8.

Here is the link if i can put it here. The file is HPusbDisk formatter.

    http://filehippo.com/download_hp_usb_disk_storage_format_tool/

Hope this helps.. Also i like the ability to hit a key while loading a rom to select different features like video size, different emulator for that paticular rom,

when i try to play DonPachi the whole screen is fipped upside down. but if i use a different emualtor for that rom it works.. Just can’t make the video larger with it..

Need help to bring up the menu for Advance Mame , to fine tune the emulator to my liking.. Any help getting my Galaga rom working will be muchly appreciated.. thanks.

    I’ve tried some things today.

I found my ipad charger, 2,2A, and tried it with the old cable. Retropie starts but when emulationstation starts it directly restarts. In the start up i saw something about the usb-cable. Think it said “maybe usb cable is broken”. It had problem finding both the keyboard and the gamepad. Said something about usb failed -71 or something.

Then I tried it with the iphone charger 1A and it started correctly but I couldnt configure the gamepad.

    Any thoughts?

    welcome :)

first off, do i store games on the sd card or off a usb storage device?
either – SD card by default

if i can store them on card, will the emulators deal with zip or rar files or do they need to be unzipped? this would largely determine how big a card i get.
some emulators work with zip files, others don’t.

also, what controller works with this?
i think pretty much any USB wired controller will work.
    will a wired 360 work?
    yep!
is anyone trying to get the steam controller to work?
have a look here – https://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=78&t=125804 – not sure if that means it works with retropie but i’d have thought so

    Hello folks,

I’m brand new to Raspberry Pi/ RetroPi. Just got myself a RP 2B specifically to be a retro gaming hub. :D

So, I’ve gone through the initial set up but I’m having a lot of trouble getting the controllers to work. I originally tried a USB Mega Drive controller, but when I try to use it in-game the buttons seem to do more than one thing; pressing left or right will change the save state as well as move the character, pressing B will reset the game, etc. Works fine in menus though.

After this I tried to get a wired 360 controller working but all kinds of craziness happened. Either it wouldn’t work at all in game, but it would in menu or vice versa. Also, the keyboard stopped working for some reason too during this. I checked the Wiki and it said that xboxdrv needed to be installed, but elsewhere it says this isn’t necessary. Either way, it seems I can’t install it without the Pi being connected to the net?

I’ve also tried creating costume controls for retroarch as described here but after putting in /opt/retropie/configs/mastersystem/retroarch.cfg I keep getting an “accessed denied” message.

I’ve spent literally hours going through wikis and forums and help files trying to get this all to work with no luck. I’ve wiped my SD card and re-loaded RetroPie on it so I’m back using the MD controller. If someone could help me out to get at least the Mega Drive controller working I would really appreciate it.

    Cheers.

Could be a power issue yep – Please try another USB power cable, combined with the ipad charger (which should be 2.1a or so).

The keyboard worked just fine the one time I entered the terminal.

    No hub.

Same cable only different chargers. Do you think that the pi gets to little amps to run both the keyboard and the controll?

I’m using a cheap snes-usb-controller that is working on my computer.

When you say you tried different chargers, did you use the same USB cable or have tried different cables?

No, it doesn’t change anything if I just use one of them.one time I entered the config but then I couldn’t do anything. It said to press up button but I couldn’t.

One time I succesfully pressed f4 and that time the keyboard worked.

I have tried different psu’s. Two different iphone/ipad chargers and the tvs usb. Nothing changed.

Yes, I am holding down a button.

    Hello!

I cant get past the welcome screen in emulation station. Neither my keyboard or my gamepad is working. 1 gamepad is detected but I cant use it or configure it.

    I have a Rpi Model B running the lateset Retropie, 3.2.1. A hp usb-keyboard and a SNES usb-gamepad.

I thought I would try the commodore 64 VICE emulator, I can get the programs to load and run, but I can’t get it to see the controller in the actual games, I can go to settings in the VICE menu and setup joystick one, and it see’s the button presses when I map the joystick/gamepad but even when I save the settings it won’t use it, or keyboard inputs either. All my other emulators are working with this controller (standard SNES usb controller).

Any ideas on what to try ? Thanks for any help!

thanks for usb link (i have not look into the wiki, sorry)

    autoconfig retroarch is not supported?

    cat /opt/retropie/configs/all/retroarch.cfg | egrep “autodetect|joypad_autoconfig_dir”

    input_autodetect_enable = true
    # corresponding to that joypad is present in joypad_autoconfig_dir.
    # Requires input_autodetect_enable to be enabled.
    joypad_autoconfig_dir = /opt/retropie/configs/all/retroarch-joypads/

I think whats not support is the preconfigured joypad by retropie (from 2.6)

what I have done is (it worked for me):

    cd /opt/retropie/configs/all/retroarch-joypads/
    sudo /opt/retropie/emulators/retroarch/bin/retroarch-joyconfig -a joypad.cfg -j0 -t 4
    CFG_NAME=$(cat joypad.cfg | grep “input_device” | cut -f 2 -d \” | tr -d ” “)
    mv joypad.cfg $CFG_NAME.cfg

Autoconfigs were depreciated by retroarch. They should be created when configuring through emulationstation or alternatively you can configure them from the rgui

For the usb transfer Read the documentation:

Is there a specific folder name you out the video in on your USB stick?

If the movie I want to play is called NOOB, do you type in “omxplayer NOOB.mp4” on the command line or something else?

I forgot to add that I did install OMXPLAYER but the video does not run. I changed the USB stick and had no luck with the file as of yet, it could another odd MAC issue with the codec… but that never happens.

    Hello,

    i have installed retropie 3.2.1
I configured Xbox controller successfuly. After that i connected a diffrent controller. The configuration in emulationstation workt perfect and the controller works in the menu. But there was no configuration file in /opt/retropie/configs/all/retroarch-joypads for that controller. So the controller is not working with the games (retroarch).
By the way retropie_setup has no option for configuring the controller any more.
i think ist was 316 but its not there anymore.

Question: How i can set up a new controller for retroarch.

Second problem is that the usb stick i connected, no directory structure for the roms is created. I activated the service with the retropie_setup but no change.

Version 2.6 worked so perfect, but 3.2.1 not.

Nice build. I was wondering if your nes ports work but with the nes opened up I can see your USB adapters wired in. Is you power button setup to send a shutdown/halt code or do you just handle this through the retropie ui too?

Thanks! Yes the NES controller ports were wired into the male controller plugs, which are plugged into tomee controller to USB adapters and then plugged into the Pi. I liked the idea of having everything easy to unplug and swap out if I want to make changes and that was a fairly easy way to make it happen.

The power button is set in-line with the AC adapter power that runs to the USB hub (which back-powers the Pi) but it’s just a simple switch. I have been doing the shut-down in the ui (emulationstation) then hitting the switch to kill power to the internals. It was an effort vs. benefit thing, though as I get free time again I’d like to revisit the power and re-set buttons. I know there are ways to make them issue commands.

    Hi,

I am running Retropie SD Image 3.2.1 on RPI B+. I am having trouble getting the hotkey and the another button which it binds to work at the same time.

eg. I bind the hotkey to the select button. The hot key would work but the select button wouldn’t. If I bind the hotkey to the L1 button, L1 button wouldn’t work but hotkey would work.

Here is my config. Anyone knows what I need to do?

Today I downloaded the 3.2.1 Retropie version directly from the site. I then formatted the card into a .img file and wrote it to a microsd card which I put in my Raspberry Pi and booted. Everything seems to work except that the cosole screens seem dated and are not the same as those in the different videos I’ve watched. Is this meant to be? There is no white strip with console name in the middle and background images, it is a gray pattern that looks like it came from an old version.

There are many like it, but this one is MINE! :-)

I’ve been having a blast with the RetroPie. I decided I should go beyond the basic Raspberry Pi case so I gutted an OG Nintendo case and filled it up with tasty RetroPie goodness. I kept it simple and used mostly “off the shelf” panel mount USB, HDMI, Ethernet stuff.
I used a powered USB hub to get extra USB slots. The only somewhat technical parts were putting in a panel mount AC adapter for the USB hub so the adapter plugged into the console exterior, making the power button work properly (with a nifty blue LED) and also making the OG controllers work with the front-case plug-ins.
I still haven’t made the reset button do anything. Eventually I’ll make it issue a reboot command or something I just haven’t gotten around to it (mostly since RetroPie/EmulationStation can do everything I want from the controller anyways).

Looks like I can only add a couple photos…

Great! Thats sounds like like exactly what I need :D

Yes, I can take a keyboard with me and follow the tutorial to run the roms directly from the USB or use the file manager inside RPi to copy them (I didn’t knew it have a file manager.. :( ).

Thank you very much guys! You helped to make a very retro Christmas day this year :D

    Have a nice Xmas!

Maybe could you just bring a keyboard in order to manually move roms from your usb key to the appropriate retropie folder, i mean with the help of some command line ?

I always used internet installation to install retropie, but with the correct image and configuration of your sd card for your Pi B+, I think it could be possible to access to the terminal and copy files from your usb key at the first use. If you have the display, you might just need a keyboard.

    Just a suggestion/question by the way :)
