I thought there was a way to load roms from a USB drive, but I don’t know how since I have never done it. It seems like maybe that was an added feature of one of the more recent updates. search around the forum and you might find something.

As far as i know, you need a computer to move roms to usb drive, flash sd card, etc.
Or you need linux command line knowledge to move roms to usb drive. So wait, is that a temporary situation with no internet or permanent, you need internet access to do alot most thing on the pi. once again this is all to my knowledge, there might be a better way.

Thanks for answering!

I am sorry I didn’t explained better, excuse my english. No one have a RaspberryPi so far. I will receive a RaspberryPi B+ as a present on Christmas. We’ll be in a country house, no internet, no computers or laptops around. Just the TV. So my question is how can I install the ROMs in a brand new RPi without using a computer?. I will carry with me a SD card with the System already preinstalled, a usb pendrive with the ROMs already copied in their respective folders and a couple of usb-SNES controllers.

Following the steps I posted before, do you think I will be able to copy the ROMs into the RPi?

Thanks again!

Hi all!

I will find myself in a trick Christmas situation. I will receive a brand new RaspberryPi B+ (as a present), I will have no access to a computer and huge wishes to play RetroPie right away with my brothers :D So my question is:

Is it possible to save roms in a USB pendrive BEFORE I plug it for first time? My idea is to do this:

1) Create a folder called “retropie” in the pendrive. Inside that folder create a folder called “roms”. Inside that folder create the folders of the emulators roms “amiga”, “amstradcpc”, etc..
2) Save the roms inside their respective folders.
3) Plug it to the RaspberryPi B+ for first time so it can automaticaly create the rest of directories (“configs” and subfolders)
4) Unplug it, and plug it again to “sincronize” the roms.

Will it work? In case it won’t, any idea on how to?

Thank you for your help!!

Best,
Nomte

Update:

1: I have made my USB Harddisk into ext4 filesystem.
2: i checked whit: sudo fdisk -l what drive i had (i this case it was sda5)
3: i did a mount sudo mount /dec/sda5 /mnt/sda
4: I created a folder “retropie” inside the /mnt/sda
midnight commander is a good tool to browse and/or edit files (sudo mc)
5: i reboot the pie and let the drive populate the rom foldes
6: in fstab i made a line to mount the drive
7: changed the permissions on the retropie folder (sudo chmod -R 777 retropie)
8: opened Filezilla and copied some roms to the drive (example: to /mnt/sda/retropie/roms/atari2600)
9: changed the path inside etc/es_systems.cfg into:
<path>/mnt/sda/retropie/atari2600</path>

all seems to be working fine now and nothing copies to the SDCard.

game started good and i was able to play
Still need some control configuring to exit the game back into menu.

Thanks for some helpfull advice and i hope some others can use this information also to play roms from a USB harddrive.

I had issues with filesystem in my usb drive.
Once I changed to ext4 I got it fixed.
What about yours?

So I ordered a second Buffalo SNES USB controller to go along with the one that I used to set up my Retropie a few days ago, but Amazon is backed up and it won’t be delivered until after our upcoming game night with friends. I am going to have the Retropie set up as a classic gaming station in one of our rooms, and I’d like to have two controllers ready for use with it.

I have PS3/PS4 controllers that I could just use wired, but I’m worried about what will happen to my SNES controller’s config if I plug in and configure a PS3 controller. Does Retropie remember configuration based on each controller’s unique ID or something? Basically what I want to happen is I plug in both the SNES controller and PS3 controller (hardwired) and have it apply their button configurations correctly every time.

Retropie might already handle this on its own (separate configs per controller and randomly assigning player 1 and 2 when they are connected via USB), but I haven’t been able to find clear documentation on this process. Thanks in advance to anyone who can clarify this.

That is your problem.

Try to get your roms destination under DEV or so.
Once you get your folders your are able to set your path.
I’m using a 64GB usb drive.

Type this command to list your drives:

sudo fdisk -l

i see youre foldername says “Retropen”, so i guess u use a USB Thumbdrive

I use a USB HARDDRIVE (500G disk).
Could it be possible that the path to the disk is not /media/usb, but somthing like /dev/hda or sda or anything like this.

The USB harddrive did populate the romsfolders, but when i enter ls -l /media/usb* i dont see any folders (* = usb0 to usb7)

the harddrive is recognized by the system, but i cant find where it is mounted.

Seems like a path mismatch problem.

What is your full path to roms?

I give you my example:

<path>/media/usb/Retropen/retropie/amiga</path>

I got my Amiga roms in this:

MEDIA -> USB -> Retropen (folder in root) -> retropie (emulator roms folder) -> amiga (roms folder)

I guess something is missing between USB and RETROPIE

If you browse your system you can check if your paths are correct.

Change /media/usb0/ to /media/usb/
Your problem is that zero.

Hi,

i have edited the es_systems.cfg file and changed the path line to point to the USB drive.

I copied some files to the roms folder, but somehow, the roms are still copied to the SD drive.

example:
<path>/media/usb0/retropie/emulatorname</path>

How can i prevent the copying to the SD drive

So I recently bought a USB SNES controller off Amazon and it works great (Gtron SNES USB gamepad) ! It works perfectly well in every other emulator EXCEPT MAME. Weird thing is that the retroarch commands still work (such as Sel+X ; start+sel does not work on the gamepad, only keyboard) but no matter how many times I’ve remapped the controller in the RetroArch GUI settings and saved it (saved as libretro.cfg), and EmulationStaion menu mapping and it still does not work in MAME. I am using lr-imame4all as the emulator since my roms only work on this and not mame4all emulator option so remapping the controls with the mame4all tab settings will not be possible. If anyone can please help me it would be greatly appreciated !

the mame configs are below ( found in /opt/retropie/configs/mame-mame4all )

http://s000.tinyupload.com/?file_id=10591152337684684884

I am using a:
-Raspberry Pi Model B+
-RetroPie v3.2.1
-Rii wireless keyboard
-Gtron SNES USB gamepad
-CanaKit wifi dongle

Hi! i tried a couple of different settings and still freezes for a couple of seconds here and there.

Then i tried something different: used an usb flashdrive with a 2gb sd card and pointed the roms dir en es_systems.cfgt to the mounted sd.

Emulation Station recognized it and listed the roms correctly. Run some roms and it freezes but the light that blinks it’s still the green one that’s beside the red power led on the pi. I don’t know , does that light blinks when there’s *any* I/O activity or just the “main” sd card? If it’s just the sd-card then the emulator is using some kind of caching/swapping system i guess, otherwise it doesn’t make any sense.

What’s your cpu/gpu mem sharing config?

Well, I just started my new Gameboy project. I have everything ready except my Pi Zero. I should be getting it in the next few days but here is the progress so far. I got the volume control, headphone jack, speaker and power switch working properly and all off the buttons tested out great. For audio out of the Zero I am going to use a usb sound card with a 1/8″ jack out. I hope it works… I will update this post after I find out.

Excellent!,thanks for the info!!
My pi2 is even more overclocked than that but the thing here is something related to I/O operations.

I’ll try tonight with those settings and let you know. I friend lend me an 8gb class 10 sd card, will try with that too and finally i have a spare external usb hardrive, will see how that works.

Hi all!

Quick question, slowly putting together a setup for a cabinet but I am currently running into the following problem:

I would like to use a pre-made USB 2 player stick (X-Arcade comes to mind) to work with because it seems it has built in support in Retropie and it would allow me to use the setup without a cabinet too.

Problems I am running into: the X-Arcade resellers in The Netherlands seem to not exist anymore and even contacting the X-Arcade crew themselves just lead to me getting a (rather unfriendly) email back suggesting I try eBay.

EDIT: The reason I was looking for a Dutch reseller is because the shipping costs are almost as much as the stick itself.

I would like a 2 player stick if possible, would make life a lot easier but perhaps somebody here can suggest a different brand?

I would also like it to be 2×4 rows so that that can be used well with NeoGeo and other arcade emulation.

I am rather fearing making my own setup (I am just not very handy) so a pre-made solution is what seems most attractive.

Perhaps 2xUSB stick is the solution?

I hope the question is clear. Any advice is very welcome on the matter!

Hi all-

I got my Xo Min joysticks working great with emulationstation and using with the MAME and FBA emulators. I also use the N64./SNES/NES emulators and would prefer to use my xbox360 controllers with those roms. If my Xbox360 adapter isn’t plugged into the USB, the joysticks workgreat, if it is plugged in, the Xbox360 controllers take default as player 1 and 2 in MAME and FBA despite my Retroarch.cfg file (below) . Is there a way I can specify to just use the joysticks as player 1 and 2 for some emulators and have the Xbox360 be the default controllers for other emulators without having to plug and unplug them as I do now? i.e. leave the xbox360 adapter plugged in and still have my Joysticks as the controls for MAME and the xbox360 for all other emulators?

I have a RPi2B that I tried to set up for RetroPie. I flashed the image to the card, then I booted the Pi. I didn’t et display, so I SSH’ed into it and ran raspi-config. the only change I made was to have the disk expanded so I could use the full capacity, then I rebooted via commandline. The display came up with the console booting and the four RPi logos at the top, then went to a RetroPie splash screen and stopped loading. I noticed the network cable lights were off, so I checked my DHCP server to see if it had grabbed an IP address- Not only had it not gotten an address, but the DHCP entry for the IP address it had prior to boot was missing (We have an 8-day lease set up for IP addresses, so it should have been listed even if it were not connected). I let it sit for an hour before power cycling the Pi, and no display, no network. Worst of all, the micro sd card will not read with 2 different readers on two different computers under three OS’s. I thought I had a bad card, so I used my other card following the same steps- and got the same result! These are Kingston Class 10 32GB microSD cards. One of them had been previously flashed, but only once- both were brand new cards. I want to use RetroPie, but I am scared to sacrifice any more cards to this project- Is the problem the card, perhaps the capacity or something? I haven’t seen anyone else with this problem. Please let me know what I can do- I’ve been trying to recover the cards, but in Linux, when I scan for the reader or try anything while the card is plugged in, the card reader tries, fails, and shuts off. My other reader tries, fails and stays on. Inserting the card to any reader on a windows machine crashes the user mode driver. The first reader is a USB3 and the second is a USB2 reader. Please let me know how I can recover- the only utility that has even come close to working was TestDisk and this was very limited. Thanks- I appreciate your help.

I’m currently starting this same project but I have a Pi zero coming in. I was going to use a Pi 2 but I was able to get my hands on a zero and thought it would be the best for the project. I will be posting in this forum with some pics but I may pick your brain here or there. The biggest challenge with the zero I will face is the lack of audio outs. I am going to try a usb sound card. Wish me luck

I think they must as I have tried to pair both of them and only one will work at a time, I can still plug one in and that works fine,thought I would be able to hook up another Bluetooth dongle and hookup to that. There’s a few mobs on ebay selling them with longer usb dongles plug them both in and run replica controls, not sure if it’s Bluetooth or infared maybe?

No the OS still on a SDCard, you can only boot with it if i’m not wrong…
I was thinking on store all data (rom, save state, gamelist, etc…) inside the ssd for the pretty large capacity (and reading speed) he could offer.
So my concern is more like, can we easely use the ssd like we could use an usb Key?

Hi,

I’ve done a clean install of retropie and all emulators work fine.

I want to change the button layout of FBA.

/opt/retropie/configs/all/retroarch-joypads/DragonRiseInc.GenericUSBJoystick.cfg

input_device = "DragonRise Inc. Generic USB Joystick "
input_driver = "udev"
input_b_btn = "3"
input_y_btn = "0"

input_select_btn = "7"
input_start_btn = "6"

input_up_axis = "-1"
input_down_axis = "+1"
input_left_axis = "-0"
input_right_axis = "+0"

input_a_btn = "2"
input_x_btn = "0"
input_l_btn = "4"
input_r_btn = "3"
input_l2_btn = "4"
input_r2_btn = "3"
input_l3_btn = "4"
input_r3_btn = "3"

input_l_x_plus_axis = "+0"
input_l_x_minus_axis = "-0"
input_l_y_plus_axis = "+1"
input_l_y_minus_axis = "-1"
input_r_x_plus_axis = "+0"
input_r_x_minus_axis = "-0"
input_r_y_plus_axis = "+1"
input_r_y_minus_axis = "-1"

input_enable_hotkey_btn = "7"
input_exit_emulator_btn = "6"

input_menu_toggle_btn = "0"
input_load_state_btn = "4"
input_save_state_btn = "3"
input_reset_btn = "3"
input_state_slot_increase_axis = "+0"
input_state_slot_decrease_axis = "-0"

I wanted to switch around keys in FBA so i’ve change the following

/opt/retropie/configs/fba/fba2x.cfg

[Joystick]
# Get codes from "jstest /dev/input/js0"
# from package "joystick"
# Defaults to XBOX 360 Controller
A_1=1
B_1=0
X_1=2
Y_1=3
L_1=4
R_1=5
START_1=7
SELECT_1=6
#Joystick axis
JA_LR=0
JA_UD=1

[Graphics]
DisplaySmoothStretch=1
# Display Effect: 0 none, 1 scanlines
DisplayEffect=0
DisplayBorder=0
MaintainAspectRatio=1
DisplayAutoRotate=0

[Sound]

I switch around a and b for instance but the keys stayed exactly the same.
also editing the retroarch.cfg within the fba folder had no effect.
(did a proper reset in between aswell)

Can someone tell me what I can do to fix it?

kind regards,

The emulator is lr-fceumm, but also with lr-nestopia it’s not working.

Hello all I’m having abit of trouble with my Pi playing some n64 games. So let me start off by giving some of the specifics. Raspberry Pi 2, retro Pi 3.1 image, it’s clocked to the second fastest speed, snes usb controllers. When I go into my Pi thru my home network I open the rom folder and only see 1 n64 emulator listed. I’ve read that there were 2 at one point? One played games better than others?lets specifically speak about Mario kart it loads with the Nintendo swinging fine, the cover screen works fine, but once I press the start button the picture is fuzzy top to bottom, the audio works, the game even though the screen is just fuzzy/scrambled still functions and can choose all choices to get to the race… Other games like f1 work ok minus some small details only being scrambled, like the shift lights etc… game works fine, I can live with that.

Can anyone explain to me how to get my n64 dialled in so it works nice. I am by no means a Linux programmer so a detailed step by step Is needed. I’m working on understanding certain functions and this site is certainly helping with that. Every other system works perfect, just this little setback. So I know I am new here and don’t have any neat things to contribute but I guess this post could help someone else.

Thanks

Hi,
please can you build a image that we can use in 8gb sd card? i have no problem if the image only have de stock openelec and retropie. I have seen the similar request in other coments on youtube videos.

This build can fit on an 8GB card. It is openelec Without Addons so it is stock. You may just have to adjust the partition size given to both openelec and retropie.

Not really, I have two sd card kingstong that they says 8gb but in practice they only have 7,40 gb when i copy the files and runs the raspberry 1gb is for installers and 6,40gb is for install all things but noobs says that needs around 7,5 gb for free space,

and i am sorry if my english is not good
What you need to do is from the “NOOBS Files folder” Place the “OS” folder in the root of a USB flash drive and the rest of files in that folder in the root of the micro card and install it that way. You will have over 1GB extra space on the micro card.
Hope that helps.
Hi. Sorry for the delay in replying. Haven’t had much time of late to come on here! :s

So firstly, my latest images will fit on a 8gb card, however to acheive this you should be using the ‘USB Method’, ie copying the installeion files to your USB flash drive instead of your memory card. Read my readme file for full instructions.

Candyluv – yes, a Triple-Boot is on the to-do list! ?

Skullmonkey – I do mention not to change the skin in my readme file! Do you need instructions on how to add the RetroPie script back in?

Herb – I used the ‘apt-get’ version of TTD, however I see you have now added it to the RetroPie setup script..cool. :)
That’s great news smithers. Can’t wait for that triple boot.
I use the usb method to install on the sd card and that so save you over 1GB of space on the card.
dank: I haven’t noticed any problems. There is about a 10-20% CPU overhead using the RT kernel as you are forced to use an older compatible USB driver.

I honestly haven’t noticed a problem with it though. I have tested Genesis on Picodrive which is pretty intensive without issues.

I tried setting display mode 2 for 480p@60hz however I am getting overscan on the top and bottom? The retroarch viewport settings do not seem to do anything when running dispmanx but the aspect ratio does.
interesting! it sounds from your previous post like the RT kernal isn’t maybe necessary, though? even so, i’m not sure the display driver is the limiting factor in most of these 2d systems – probably the CPU, but still :)

EDIT: apart from cutting latency of course – that’s definitely awesome regardless!

overscan: not sure about that – might be one for the libretro forums? i’ve always run out full 1080p on my display, and used integer scaling (although lately i’ve favoured just letting it stretch to full height) i think using non-native display modes puts you at the mercy of your display’s handling of those resolutions, perhaps?

When emustation starts it detects my usb controller fine. I then go into the menu and configure it. After this it works in the menu and one time in a game.

However, I cannot get it to autoconfigure. Everytime I have to go through the setup process. BTW, the devices is recognised as ‘USB gamepad’ when I press the ‘A’ key to configure it.

I checked the manufacturing and device codes with lsusb and made a corresponding entry in the /opt/retropie/emulators/retroarch/configs. I used 0x79 0x11 as well as decimal values (121 17) in the config file. The config directory is correctly set in the retroarch.cfg file (default value).

I looked carefully at the wiki and the forums. Some help was there but it looks like all the files mentioned are now in a different location (I updated my retropie on my model 2 pi nov 30, 2015).

I’m a bit lost at the moment….
Any help appreciated.

Mate did you ever solve thisd? as having the exact same proble.

Solutions offered include:

Put them in lr-imame4all which uses the Retroarch configs HOWEVER there isn’t a map/hotkey via my PS3 set up for insert coin/start game (by default 5 and 1 on keyboard!)

SO then someone suggested setting upa hotkey.. BUT i am struggling to locate my PS3 USB mapping file. I saw Floobs video on it, well spoken and described BUT it was running on an old version and my set up / file positions seem totally different.

Sorry to not offer you a solution but anything I find or if you have a solution we sould share.
