That sounds about right for n64 emulation on the pi. You can try downloading mupen64plus testing from the experimental menu and changing it to your default emulator from x or m menu as the ROM loads but even then it will still be hit and miss. I stick with my PC for n64 emulation since the pi just doesn’t quite cut it yet for me.
Hi guys, I’m having trouble using n64 on raspberry pi 2, retropi v3.
I can load the games but there really slow & choppy and some elements of the game display appear missing..
Any thoughts?

I am also running 2.6 and Mupen64Plus and have similar experience except when using 4 controllers on those exact games too.

I cannot get any roms to run under any of the N64 emulators, including the experimental testing builds. I am at my wits end. Please someone help. I KNOW I had it working at before.
I start the rom from the list and it cycles back to the list. I check /tmp/runcommand.log, but it is empty. Is there any log output I am missing that may tell me what the hell is going on?
I have tested the roms on PC and the work fine…

hi do excuse the complete noob’ness of me but ive just setup my rpie2 got sega, n64, gameboy colour etc working without having to do anything but copy roms over.. but GBA is giving me a real problem just keeps doing the same as thedigi321’s, loading into that screen and returning back after few seconds

I’m using the mupen64plus to play Nintendo 64. It’s running fine the game Super Mario 64, Mario Kart 64, Diddy Kong Racing and Star Fox 64. Other games is freezing and I need to reboot the Pi again. You can run N64 at full speed only Pi 2!
When You say installing Retropie, I don’t know if you download the Retropie Image File and burnt on the SD Card or installing through Raspbian. So, get the image file and the emulators and configurations were made, just need only set the file es_systems.cfg to select what emulator will use to play the systems available.

Im new to pi and well pretty much linux as well. I am trying to install retro pi and have gotten a couple emulators that are for n64 but tends to lag a little. (512 and overclocked on pi2 or high). In getting the roms from my flash onto the pi it seems to have wiped out all of my graphics
ontop of all that i think some of the issues would be fixed if i could connect to the internet i have a wifi dongle but its not working and wont let me connect to wifi when i try to. i dont have the ability at the moment to direct connect to my router.

*Never mind I got it to work I just had forgotten to add it to the videomodes.cfg file. Everything works flawlessly. I just added to video modes. lr-mupen64plus_render=”config”

I apologise if this is a bit on the nose and I did mention this through in the controller form, but after a few days more worth of tinkering inside RetroPie and really starting to get my teeth into it, and using up my google-fu, I came to the conclusion it was better listed here :)
Would it be possible to have “custom config files” for the controller input that could be selected much the way that the different emulation settings are per rom as the modern controllers really don’t map all that well to the various way that the N64 control is used. I know it seems a bit like overkill but it’d sure be handy!

I think N64 games are still very hit or miss. I can get most games to run full speed but there are random graphical and sound glitches on a lot of games. I think N64 is just hard to emulate; a better option would be to download the games using a Nintendo Wii, but then you have to pay for them.
You can try playing around with different plugins under core options, but I think the defaults are the best for the pi. Other plugins might be more accurate but not run as well on the pi.

First forum post and new user here. It’s been a long journey for me to get a raspberry Pi and also went through all the hoops before finally settling on retropie as my chosen permenant install :)
Out of the box 3.0 beta has been great! With just one little hitch, and that’s the funky N64 controller mapping one has to do (otherwise I’d not be posting) Is it possible to select a different Mupen cfg file to run with a chosen rom the same way as one can select other setup options by pressing x?
The setup menu is such a great feature at present, and i just feel adding custom configs would be something I’d like to tinker with (or feature suggest even).

I’m running Retropie 3.0 b4 on a Raspberry Pi 2. I’ve tried both USA and Euro releases of Gauntlet Legends for N64, the game launches and I see some screen for about a quarter of second then nothing but black. Does anyone know of any emulator settings specific to Gauntlet Legends N64 to get it running?
512 is way too high for emulationstation, specially when playing PSX games. The GPU needs very little memory with the games, as most of the emulation is handled by the CPU, and the games load from the CPU memory split, not the GPU. 128 mb to 256 mb should be all you need, everything will run fine with that.
Giving the GPU 512 mb of ram causes some PSX games not to load, and others to run very choppy. I am actually running my Pi with 600 mb for the CPU and 400 mb with the GPU, because I am using Kodi. I have done a ton of testing with Kodi 15 RC 3 and found that it works best with around 400 mb of ram, as it’s very GPU heavy unlike the emulators. More ram is always nice for Kodi, but I limit it to 400 because anything more than that and I start having issues with the PSX games and some N64 games running smoothly/locking up the pi. This for me seems to be the happy balance as all of my emulators run great and Kodi runs great too. With less memory I was having more crashes with Kodi, specially streaming HQ 1080p movies…
But yea keep it some where between 128 and 256 for the GPU giving the cpu the rest should keep all of those systems running just fine.
Just edit /boot/config.txt and comment on the gpu_memory line and change that to 128 and or 256 and that should set it.
As Alucard said, the performance issues with emulators in most cases are not memory related, they are CPU related, or simply sometimes emulators that are not optimized. PSX games run pretty much 100% for me. I rarely have any slowdown on any games, and I have around 150 psx games on my system. The N64 emulator needs some work and could probably be optimized a lot better for Pi, I think that’s the main issue with that.
I’m working with the 3.0 image for the Raspberry Pi 2, trying to bind the N64 controls to a PS2 controller.
For earlier RetroPie releases on my RP1, I would manually edit config files using gedit on Ubuntu, but something seems different with 3.0, and I’ve had to use RGUI to bind the controls.
However, I have to do it every time I start the emulator. I’ve played around with the “save autoconfig” options and other options in the menu, but still every time I begin the emulator, it’ll revert to the default config.
Is there any way to get it to remember my settings?

I use 256Mb on my RPI2’s… even think 128Mb would be enough.
I think it’s the CPU that’s the bottle neck, not the RAM/GPU-mem, and the proper choice of correct emulator when it comes to playing PSX-games smoothly in my opinion.
My Pies use the std 900Mhz ARM, 250Mhz Core, 450Mhz SDRAM + 256Mb GPU mem – and they play PSX-games much better with v.3xxx releases than the v2.6 – but I can’t say if its because of new “enhancments” in the lr-pcxs-rearmed emulator… or if it’s the power supply, the class 10 SD card, etc… (?)
N64 emulation seems to be… too much… yet… for the RPI2 – but who knows, in RetroPie v4.xxxx it might be flawless too. :)
guys, what’s the highest recommended memory split, you’d recommend? I have it set on 512, but wondered if I set it higher will performance increase with running psx & n64?

Would anyone be able to direct me how to configure an SNES controller to play N64 games. I have tried the auto-configure but the directional pad doesn’t work as the joystick. Is it possible?
I think you may be thinking of the old way of doing things, with the newer versions of retropie you don’t need to modify any paths in es_systems.cfg. rather you can press js0 (button 0 on your joypad) or a keyboard as a ROM loads and you can switch the default emulators on the fly.
But if you’re talking about wanting a two n64 menus in emulation station, one for each emulator yes you’d have to modify the es_systems.cfg.

While you install it via the retropie script, I believe this script will not edit the es_systems.cfg with the correct paths etc..
Do you need to do this manually ? Can somebody provide an example ?

Just making an assumption here, but wouldn’t that be down to the emulators themselves as opposed to RetroPie / RPi 2 itself?
I used a Xbox classic for emulation several years now. It´s hard to believe, but the old Xbox (14 years!) is still much better for emulation than the RPi2 from 2014. PSX and N64 emulation runs way better than on the RPi2.

I noticed not only the up and down was different I also noticed when pressing left or right made the character jump up diagonally.
When installing my retroarch controller I had my d-pad, Analogstick and C-buttons overlap with eachother
If I remember correctly the c buttons on the N64 controller of the official game when pressed would give a diagonal jump in SSB. That could be a reason why the c buttons can’t overlap D-Pad and Analogstick directions.
I temporarily removed the following lines from my DragonRiseInc.GenericUSBJoystick.cfg
input_r_x_plus_axis = “+0″
input_r_x_minus_axis = “-0″
input_r_y_plus_axis = “+1″
input_r_y_minus_axis = “-1″
this has solved the SSB issue N64.
But here comes the actual problem:
Seeing I wanna play multiple N64 games with only one joystick and 8 buttons to my disposal
I’d like to bind Analogstick with my select button to input the d-pad directions
And 4 of my arcade buttons in combination with select to input the c buttons
And bind B with select to input the z-trigger. Although I wonder how I can bind a ‘press and hold’ z-trigger :P
I wonder if anyone else has come up with a solution to this problem with let’s say a standard Snes controller ;P

I’m using PocketSnes, Mupen64Plus and PSxRearmed and them work fine! Check the SNES Roms, download the goodsnes…the n64 roms I played fine this games: Super Mario 64, Diddy Kong Racing, Mario Kart 64, Banjo Kazooie, etc…Some games are playable, see the videos on YouTube. PSX games are the bin, iso, img files of cd games, not be ecm files (compressed). Check the power supply, must be 5v and 2a. Is there a rainbow square at up/right screen blinking while you play the games? Good luck.
I just got my Pi 2 and installed everything and I’m having a couple problems.
Most of my SNES roms just will not load. They will act like they are and then just go back to the list of roms. Could this be a problem with my roms?
N64 is a choppy mess for me when I tried to play Banjo Tooie, OoT, Majoras Mask.
Is there any way I could remedy this?
Should I be using different emulators than the default ones or is there any optimizations I can do on the SNES, N64 emulators.
The main emulators I use are SNES, N64, PSX. Any help on making them run better would be greatly appreciated.

I’ve got a new Raspberry Pi 2, with RetroPie 3.0 beta from SD card image, and all of the emulators and roms that I’ve tested just worked beautifully, except one: Nintendo 64 games. They are unplayable: very slow and the sound keep stuttering like crazy. I’ve been seeing at the internet people performing n64 games on RPi’s 2 perfectly, so I know it’s possible.
I set the overclocking to “Pi2”, and tried to change the video settings but I didn’t see any difference.
What could I’ve been doing wrong?

I’ve got the same controller, and the joystick and the hatswitch are connected to the same axis
as we can see in your configuration

And i THINK (this i’m not sure at all) that mupen64plus has a tendancy to automatically link the right joypad of any controller with the c-button (like on Xbox controller).
That would mean that when you press down on the stick, the emulator see down and C-up, whitch makes your character jump in SSB.
Whatsoever you can check this by editing the n64 config file
sudo nano /opt/retropie/configs/n64/retroarch.cfg
I was able to solve the issue in version 3. I’m using a dragon inc usb encoder and I have a joystick 6 buttons plus start and select.
for some reason though when I press down in a N64 (smashbrothers)
the character goes up…
when I hold down it will ‘crouch aswell’
so right now 1 button is doing 2 actions.

after hours hours of struggle, trying to understand why mupen64plus doesn’t get my hotkey/exit emulator combination, i found this file to edit as well.
i personally tried

(i guess you have the same N64 replica controller than i do)
But nothing happened either, does anyone have a solution ? having to hit escape on a keyboard to exit the emulator isn’t an option …
After a looong time and many headaches, I finally was able to setup 2 wireless ps3 controllers for my retropie. I picked up a usb n64 controller and my question is this: if I configure a wired usb n64 controller, will that mess with my wireless ps3 configurations? I don’t want to mess with that after spending so much time to set up. In a addition, what is the max number of different types of controllers that I can set up? I’d like to buy usb controllers for every system and plug them in when I pay a different system. Is this doable?
