Hello everyone, I am brand new to emulators and I had a couple of questions. I went through the Retropie install and everything went very smoothly. But if I play anything more advanced than NES, even some NES games sound is very poor, the game is very choppy sound and video. N64 is completely unplayable due to lag. I am not sure if these could be bad ROM’s that I downloaded or some other issue. Current setup is:

Pi Model:B+
RetroPie Version Used: 3.0.0 Beta
Built From: SD Image
USB Devices connected: Keyboard
Controller used: Xbox 360 remote (2x)

THanks in advance for any help.

Floob, are there any big benefits to upgrading from 2.6 to the beta yet with respect to n64? I’ve got basically every emulator I want running fine and even moonlight configured BUT I haven’t yet configured all of my N64 games (I have configured some so they run but not all).

I am wondering if upgrading will give a significant change to n64 roms that work or if it comes with some “out of the box” configuration for games (since they all seem to be different).

I’ve been holding off upgrading since everything else works fine.

First and foremost, you guys have covered a lot of ground, what is supported is very extensive and I’m looking forward to receiving my Pi in the mail so I can give all this a spin

That said, a couple items that I feel would be a wonderful addition would be ports of the Odamex Source port which stays true to the original DOOM look and feel, but also ads additional features such as a 32-bit display, free look and jump (optional), expanded mapping & scripting features, fine tuned on-line play support complete with Death Match, Capture the Flag, Co-Op, and so on, plus many more features!

This aside, a port of DOOM 64 Ex would also be a wonderful addition if possible as it is a port of the N64 game DOOM 64, but again with expanded features including OpenGL support.

A port of ZDOOM would also be nice as that would open the door to Heretic, Hexen, and Strife, not to mention a plethora of quality expansion wads.

Just wanted to say, I am a huge dreamcast fan, and this and N64 are two of my all time favorite systems, it’s sooooooooooooooooooooo great to see the work that you have done on this system free5ty1e to make this finally playable and work so well. Please keep up the amazing work, this is really turning the Pi into something special! Now if only the N64 emulation would start making more progress, but I am quite happy to have 30 games, many of the top titles running great and looking forward to the future! Thanks for all the hours and work you have put into this, means a lot to a lot of people, hope you know that!

Hello,

I have a question; did the in game save works on psx and n64 ? or I have to use a snapshot (instant save) ?

I use the retroarch emulator.

And I have configured my xbox controller with /opt/retropie/emulators/RetroArch/installdir/bin/retroarch-joyconfig, but the joystick doesn’t work ( I tested only one game) does the joystick doesn’t work on retroarch ? Or I just missed the configuration ?

Thanks for your answers.

Best regards

I somehow messed up the cfg file and now the roms are stretched 16:9. I cant figure out how to make them 4:3 as they were in the 3.0b2 retropie image.

Could someone post their config settings? I’m using the standalone mupen with rice. Any help greatly appreciated.

I am using Xbox360 pads for playing N64 and PSX games and a keyboard for Kodi (which is very annoying). For everything else, I am using the not-so-much insider’s tipp, the iBuffalo SNES style classic gamepads. They are really awesome!

retropie 3 has a single n64 folder – you can press x or m on game launch to configure which emulator is used by default, and which emulator to use per rom (and choices of emulator vs render driver).

The n64-mupen64plus folder is not appearing in roms on the device after a fresh install of retropie 3.0.

I went through the setup menu and updated the mupenp64plus binaries afterwards and it still does not appear.

Any ideas?

I want to use that particular emulator because i’ve seen many videos where n64 emulation seems to work better after using that and adding a plugin.

I am trying to run Zelda on mupen64plus—testing with the rice video plugin. The game boots fine, and I can hear the menus and buttons all work, but it’s a completely black screen for some reason. I have tried hitting x/m to switch video modes and thus far have had no luck getting the screen to show despite the game running fine in the background. Anyone have any ideas whats going on with this?

That actually worked for me. Found out that my analog sticks work for N64, but not PSX, so maybe emulator related.

for the saving thing, make sure the following is present in your main retroarch.cfg (I was having the same problem):

config_save_on_exit = true

and that will make sure that retroarch saves your config when you exit the emulator.

wrt your analog sticks, not sure what the deal is there. I installed the ps3 driver and plugged in a ps3 controller via cable and it seems to work (tested in n64 emulator and the right stick did something with the C buttons) but I haven’t spent that much time with it as the main purpose of what im making is to emu the 8-bit/16-bit games.
Thx for the saving thing. Seems to work for me :). My Controllers are XBox 360 Wireless, unfortunately I don’t have access to PS3 Controllers for more testing.
Shenmue Disk1 runs, it’s “playable” but not perfect, very reasonable. I think with a few more tweaks and it’ll play very smoothly. Free5tyle, i just want to say, i love you and the progress you’ve made on this.
For some reason game saving takes an unusually long time, but that could just be shenmue, i’ve not played it on my actual dreamcast recently, but i don’t remember game saves taking that long. (My pi2 is inside an original gameboy, so a portable dreamcast is amazing!)

I do have a couple requests. Because mine is a portable gameboy, and saving takes a while, i wonder if Save States are possible. I use savestates for everything that i can. 1 button to save, 1 button to load.

Also is there a way i can reverse the axis on reicast? other emulators i can select which axis direction is what. Because my joystick(PS-Vita thumbstick) is technically upside down, left is right, and up is down. In other emulators like mupen64plus i can configure these, same with all the libretro emulators. I’d also need to change the sensitivity, my joystick only needs a very tiny deadzone, and has a rather limited maximum range, of the 32k range that mupen64 uses. i can only use about 15-16k ranges, so normally full forward would cause a character to walk or even tip-toe(mario), but by changing the sensitivity from 32k to 14.5k(ish), and the deadzone to (256, much lower than default) i can use my joystick normally.
Hi Djinny!

Game saves to VMU are the only operation currently that directly writes to the SD card during gameplay, so it’s bound to be a bit sluggish during saves (and they will take a little longer than you’re used to on the real Dreamcast, but not by much; my Rush 2049 saves only take a second or two; then again, it only takes a couple of blocks).

Awesome to hear that Shenmue is at least partially playable! I have to find my copy and make disc images so i can get back into that game :D

I would love to learn how to implement save states!! Definitely on my list but no idea how to start just yet. (free5ty1e = n00b @ emulation coding)

However, I *DO* have an idea on how to start implementing some emu.cfg settings for the following, and plan to start soon:

* Sound playback frequency (audio.playback.frequency=44100)
* Sound playback channels (audio.playback.stereo=1)
* Frameskip (video.frameskip=0)
* Controller axis deadzone (for each defined controller in emu.cfg, such as axis.deadzone=128)
* Controller axis max value (for each defined controller, such as axis.maxvalue=16384, assumed to be the same number positive and negative)
* Controller axis reversal (for each defined controller axis, such as axis.0.reversal=1)

Thanks for the suggestions!! :D

Pi Model: 2 model B
RetroPie Version Used: retropie-vv3.0beta3-rpi2
Built From: SD Image
USB Devices connected: none
Controller used: n64 original

Hello!

I just got Retropie installed. I’m using original n64 controller(s).

The problem is that when i enter any game, by pressing start or B exists the game and shoulder buttons work as save state-buttons. Even though i have configured them to be what they should be.
I have tried using the main menu “configure input” and retropie-menu “configure retroarch keyboard/joystick”, but no difference.

USB keyboard works fine in games.

Other thing is that i can’t get analog audio out even though i have configured it for 3,5mm plug on retropie and/or raspi settings.

Any help? :)

This has been driving me crazy, this is the last thing I need to fix in my update to retropie 3.0 beta 2 build, all other systems and controls work just can’t get the mupen64plus-testing emulator to exit from joypad. When I plug in a usb keyboard to the pi, the ESC button will exit the emulator, but the button I have set up in the cfg file isn’t working what so ever and I have no clue why!

In jstest I have two controllers, JS1 and JS2. I am using a wireless Xbox 360 controller. All buttons work just fine in all emulators, and all buttons that I have set up in the inputautocfg.ini work fine in game with the N64 emulator, just not the Joy Mapping Stop button in the mupen64plus.cfg. Any help would be MUCH appreciated!!!!

# Joystick event string for stopping the emulator
Joy Mapping Stop = “J1B10”

Thats what I have it set to in mupen64plus.cfg in /opt/retropie/configs/n64/….

This is what the emulator is picking up as my controller: ‘# SDL joystick name (or Keyboard)
name = “Xbox Gamepad (userspace driver)”

And again, all N64 buttons work perfectly when a rom loads on my Xbox 360 controller, there is just no way for me to exit the rom with out plugging in a keyboard and hitting esc…. I am 2000% baffled and have no idea what else to try nor where to go from here. For the record I have tried a whole host of different exit buttons in the cfg, none work…. Please help!

hello I was wandering if there is a command to go straight to the screen where you select the emulator and video plug in you want for n64 roms, instead of launching an emulator and pressing x on the keyboard.

the reason is that my keyboard is plugged into my pc and is very temperamental and the wires need to be in a certain position for it to work so its frustrating using the keyboard on my pi.

So would it be possible to configure n64 emulators on my my pc using putty or maybe even winscp over ssh?

thanks

Thanks for the reply :-)

Ultimately, it was actually the output port which was set to HDMI (mupen64plus.cfg).

Changed it value = 0 for analog audio, and the issue disappeared.

Need to test the HDMI value (1) again on a TV, as the monitor it is connected to now is without speakers.

Hi,

I’ve finally made Mupen64plus run smoothly on my rpi2. Problem is that when I start the application, it keeps writing out that there’s an audio warning:

Audio Warning: Audio Buffer under run(01 – the number grows as long as the application is running.

And when that audio error pops up = No audio in Mupen64.

did anyone of you run into this issue as well, and what was the solution?

As I don’t have access to the GUI settings on Mupen64plus, I would be grateful, if some of you could tell me how to resolve this via the config files.

I will try reformatting my SD with retropie again, and check if this was just an one-timer problem.

Hey check this out https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DJC2EB-za3s

I have my setup solely for PSX and struggled with it on the B+. The Pi 2 however runs every PSX game I have tried flawlessly. Sound and speed wise.

Currentally I am 22 15 hours into Final Fantasy Tatics, blitzed through Diablo for a few hours and just finished Legacy of Kain – Soul Reaver. I have played about an hour into ff9 with no issues with any of the above.

I cannot comment on N64 as I have not tried.

I am attaching a picture for you to understand my problem. can anyone help me please? Use a raspberry pi 2 with 3.0 emulation station. Thanks in advance to all

i also noticed that in the video-general section of mupen64plus.cfg, the ScreenWidth was set to 640, and ScreenHeight to 480, whereas my games are definitely full hd, so i’m a bit lost. does rebuilding the emulators cause them to look somewhere else for the cfg files?

EDIT: i’ve just setup my quit emulator button with mupen in that same .cfg and it worked, so scrub that last idea!

interestingly, in the config files, the mupen64plus.cfg file has a ‘latency’ setting in the audio section at the top. this is set to 300(ms), which seemed like it might explain it. i had a look in the retroarch.cfg file in the same directory (assume this is for lr-mupen64plus, which has no audio latency issue for me) has an ‘audio_latency’ setting that was at 64

i tried setting mupen64plus.cfg to 64 also and no changes, which is a bit baffling! i’ve set it back to 300.

Pi Model: pi 2
RetroPie Version Used: 3.0.0 (not actually sure which beta – anyway to check?)
Built From: sd image
USB Devices connected: 2 controllers, 1 usb stick (game running from sd card though), 1 keboard
Controller used: buffalo usb snes clone
How to replicate the problem:

hi all! after getting mixed results with the default lr-mupen64plus n64 emulator, i installed the mupen64plus-testing one via the setup-script. i also updated everything from the binaries.

it seems that with any of the mupen64plus emulaters (testing OR the regular, and either glesrice or n64 plug), and any rom (eg mario 64) i’m getting a small delay between the actions on screen and the sound. performance otherwise seems good, but it’s really annoying and makes most games unplayable, in a way.

it’s not my TV as all other emulators work fine – in fact the default lr-mupen64plus doesn’t do anything like this, nor do the other types of emulator.

my pi 2 has a small overclock, and i changed the vram split to ~384MB (i think that’s right?). it seems all n64 games are running at my HDTV’s resolution of 1080p when using mupen64plus, which i wasn’t expecting, but the performance is good so i’m happy leaving it at that if it’s normal? lr-mupenplus seems to run at a lower resolution by default, and doesn’t have these sound glitches.

When it comes to plugins and 3d graphics I’m kinda ignorant so that’s why I’m curious how viable this newly released video plugin for n64 would be:

It depends on your games and how much you are willing to tweak settings. I’ve had more luck with PS1 emulation than I have than I have had with N64 (granted I may not have been patient enough to sort out the N64 settings) but that being said the Rpi 2 makes a big difference. Since those two consoles are at the limits of the Rpi 2’s processing power it will be hit and miss but a lot more games function in some form or fashion better than the B+. Plus even if the games don’t all work, there are a lot of added benefits to having an Rpi 2 regardless- faster boot times, more emulator options, and for only $35 its a good investment.

Do you want me to add 4x options, or look at shaders next?

Thanks Floob.

Could you also incorporate the 5x settings for N64 and PCengine? Then we can work on the 4x settings, which I sent you the resolutions for. Let me know if you need anything.

I was curious how good the emulation ability of the new Raspberry Pi 2 B model is, specifically with PS1 and N64 games. I’ve owned the B+ model, but it was incapable of emulating the PS1 and N64 games I own, which was a bit disappointing.

Is the refresh able to handle PS1 and N64 games now? I’d like a bit of advice/information from people with real world testing of the emulation. I’m a huge fan of N64 games and PS1 turn based RPGs and would love to pick one up to emulate them.

Thanks everyone!

26 Emulators showing currently on ES and just the Pi2 preset.

I’ve gone through it all again, so far i have atarilynx + kodi + psx/32x art changed and still working.. will try clone fba and n64 again. (different art for lib/mupen etc)

Seems to all be working and stable for now (5mins).. It would be useful to know what causes it to bug out like that.. as there more I’d like to change.

reboot it and bam locked up again just like the 2nd picture

Hi Guys,

RPI2 + Retropie 2.6

I was using simple theme 1.3 which came with 2.6 img, Tried adding atarilynx theme to simple directory but froze after reboot.

replaced entire simple them with 1.4 version which came with atarilynx, so fixed that issue.now kodi theme seems to be making it freeze.

did locks up while scrolling.
and now as soon as ES starts. SSH reboot works, nothing else. if i remove kodi theme it works again.

I also changed psx,32x art blurs (same size/name)
I made n64mupen and fbalibretro themes (left the originals as they well)

One solution for now is to run kodi from ports and remove its own theme for now.

Any help is appreciated.

Cheers
Meat
