Well oddly enough after I flashed a new SD Card with IMG 1.10, the problems I was having with MAME4ALL-Pi are largely gone. The sound seems to work on all the games I’ve tried and they run at the normal speed. Weird.

The sound DOES skip a lot though…any fix for that besides overclocking more? (Already at Medium)…Like maybe a way to lower the sound quality or something to that effect?

    Er…nevermind :D

I realized the path was incorrect in the mame.cfg. I fixed it and now the games run…Sorry about that!

Yeah sound works on all other systems (except Osmose, but that was just one of many issues I had with that particular emu and I gave up on that one a long time ago…) and sound works on a handful of MAME games…Doesn’t seem to be much if a pattern either…Just some games in MAME have sound but most don’t…

And yeah I tried all of the F-Keys…fluctuating around 200% is lowest I can get the framerate…As I said, without overclocking MAME runs normal speed but with overclocking it can’t get it to slow down…Unfortunately, everything else runs better with overclocking…

    Appreciate the advice!

I was able to map the Exit UI function so thank you for that! (Was rather obvious really but I hadn’t noticed that option :P)

As for the other stuff though…no such luck…The FPS shows the framerate running around 200% most of the time when frameskip is off…Adjusting the frameskip makes the percentage even higher…

Still no sound on most games…Definitely not a sample issue because many games I’ve tried that don’t use samples still don’t have sound…

I tried removing the <listLeftAlign> tag and the result was the list being pushed even FURTHER over to where I could barely see it. I also tried renaming it <listCenterAlign> which didn’t help either.

I saw something online though, I believe it was on the website forum for EmulationStation, saying that in the next version that issue will be addressed and if you don’t have any boxart images present gamelist will default to basictheme. I guess I’ll just have to wait this one out. Thanks again for the advice though!

I too would like to know what is new with the new image and also, can everything new in 1.10 be updated from a current installation via the setup script or should I just start fresh with the new image?

I apologize for not being more clear. I am aware that you can turn on blood via the service menu for the games running on the US or Asia bios but there are other elements for certain games that only appear for the Japan bios. As I understand it, in some games certain moves are removed, certain music tracks aren’t heard, and more infamously, certain body parts aren’t as “animated” if you aren’t using a Japan bios…

None of this hurts the fun of the game but I’ve always been a bit unnerved by censorship in any form so if the option to not have it is available, I want to choose it. However, I’d still like to be able to play the game in English…or more accurately, I’d like to be able to play the games that aren’t censored to begin with in English without having to change the bios every time I want to play a different game.

PiFBA seems to default to using the asia-s3.rom bios (located in neogeo.zip) but if you pick, say, sp-j2.rom (which is a Japan bios) and rename it to asia-s3.rom inside the zip, then the PiFBA will load the game up as the Japanese version. You can see differences immediately (eg. title screens look different, and of course the text is in Japanese).

The only solution I’ve found thus far is to use uni-bios_3_0.rom (renamed to asia-s3.rom) which will allow me to switch the region setting within the game without having to go in and rename any more files within neogeo.zip. It’s not a perfect solution, especially since, like the standard neogeo bios, my settings never save and I have to reset them everytime I reload the game, but it’s at least tolerable and I achieve the result I want.

The asia_s3 bios is censored. I’m trying to find out if any of the English bios’ are uncensored.
I’m also having trouble with the neogeo.zip and the service menu. Could you possibly post a link (private message) to the correct bios?
I don’t actually recall where I got my working neogeo.zip but I just googled it and checked various sites until I found one that was about 240KB in file size (My previous one had been about 1.2MB)
After testing all Neo Geo games I can confirm that only 4 don’t work properly with piFBA:
    * mslug3 (crash on launch)
    * kof2000 (crash on launch)
Actually I found that if you add the contents of mslug3.zip to the mslug3n.zip and then run mslug3n.zip in piFBA, it works perfectly! The same method also works for KOF2000 (again, just make sure once you’ve combined kof2000 with kof2000n that you leave the file named kof2000n.zip).

So nothing I’ve tried has fixed my issues with using gamelist.xml and still maintain the centered list…I read something that implied that basic mode puts the list in the center but regular mode (when using gamelist.xml) is designed to use frames for boxart and such…Is this true? It seems like the xml could be edited to get around that but I can’t seem to figure out what’s causing it to begin with.

And I know for MAME you have to create a cfg folder in the emulator’s directory…Is there a similar folder you need to create for PiFBA to get the dipswitch settings to save?

Oh man…I am ALMOST there…I took your advice swapped the “theme” and “basicTheme” setups and my background and header and font, etc. all now show up…But I can’t seem to get the list of games back to the center of the screen. They are pushed way over to the right side, I guess to make room for boxart. But I don’t care to use boxart. Can you use gamelist.xml but not use boxart and keep the text list in the center of the screen?

Also, one more question about the service menu…PiFBA doesnt seem to save any of my dipswitch settings…Is there a way to fix that or is that just how it is

First off, thanks for all the advice. It has been very helpful!

nemo93: Taking your suggestion I found a different neogeo.zip bios and sure enough I can now access te service menu.

I will look for those decrypted ROM files you mentioned.

As for the gamelist.xml, however…I did generate one and put it in my roms folder and as far as displaying the full game names, it worked…The problem is that it overrides my existing theme.xml for that menu and now I just have a white screen with the game names all on the righthand side (I had them centered without boxart etc)…Is there anyway to incorporate the gamelist into my current theme?
Delete es_input.cfg, reboot and connect a usb keyboard and use that to map the controls you don’t have enough buttons for?
I tried this but alas…Once I’ve selected the Atari joystick as my second controller and started mapping the buttons, it doesn’t seem to let me use any other device to map the remaining ones…

Sigh…This is frustrating because I refuse to believe there is no way to make this work…It recognizes the controller just fine…I just need a way to tell it the Atari joystick is the second controller without going through the input setup utility…

Well I guess I spoke too soon. Sega CD is indeed working great but TG16 CD is still not working at all…Not sure what to do since I have SYSCARD3.PCE in both the bios directory and the roms directory.

UPDATE: So yeah this last one was just my own oversight…I still have trouble remembering how intensely case-sensitive Linux is…

    I renamed SYSCARD3.PCE to syscard3.pce and all is well…

Oddly enough, when I started messing around with PiFBA I noticed it used the same type of configuration file as PiSNES so I copied and pasted the second controller mappings from FBA to SNES and everything is working just fine now! :D

Ah! I believe the Genesis_OS_ROM.bin just may have been the issue. I’d never heard of needing that one but I have it copied to the Pi now and Sega CD is working perfectly! Thanks a ton!

That would indeed be disheartening…But surely there must be some way. I’ve no doubt the controller would work fine, once in a game, I just need to create a config file for EmulationStation that has the info for that particular joystick. Where did EmulationStation pull the information from for the other controllers I’ve configured?

There is some very useful information in that thread I will certainly refer to later…The problem right now, however, is that I can’t even get the Atari joystick set up to begin with because it doesn’t have enough buttons to map to all the commands EmulationStation wants me to map.

Thank you so much for that advice! I had to use the entry “input_menu_toggle_btn” but that did the trick! It would certainly be nice to be able to hotkey turning the color on and off since I’d rather play the pre-super Gameboy games in black and white but now that I have the retroarch menu mapped to my gamepad I am plenty happy I can just pop into that whenever I want and make the change manually. Thanks again!

I have settled for running the emulator in full screen and then manually flipping my TV over to 4:3. Its not ideal, as I would prefer to have the emulator do it manually so I don’t have to keep switching back and forth, but it’s better than nothing I suppose :)

I DID manage to get the hotkey function working (though I’m not entirely sure how I did it :P ) but I am having trouble getting the second controller to work properly. I cut and pasted a second copy of the controller mapping in snes9x.cfg for controller 1 (JS0) and renamed it to (JS1) but PiSNES seems to be having trouble understanding my second controller. The face buttons and d-pad seem ok but Start and Select don’t respond at all and some games (such as Super Mario World) don’t seem to recognize there even IS a second controller (SMW auto defaults to 1 controller hotseat mode). Even more oddly, when I have the second controller mapped in the config, the button assignments seem to have changed (in game) on my first controller. I have a feeling the two are conflicting with each other somehow in the cfg file but I’m not sure what exactly the issue is.

Yes I imagine I will…The default NES emulator works relatively fine for me, just some games are occaisioally sluggish (ie. Bubble Bobble). I figured if QuickNES didn’t have those issues I’d use it instead. I was just curious if there is some big trade off I don’t know of.

After reading your reply, I went and found copies of the afore-mentioned ROMs from a different source (ridiculously I hadn’t thought of trying this before…) and all of new ROMs for the problem games worked just fine.

Ballistix seemed to controller swap on me (had to use controller 2 to select anything from the menu) but once the game started the controllers seemed to swap back so I’m calling it a win…

Didn’t have your issue with Dungeon Explorer at all but I agree the controls on Pac-Land are quite wonky…Seems as though that is how they are supposed to be…

Anyway, thanks for checking those for me…It got me to think of what should have been obvious from the start :P
