R.e WiFi Config

I am not familiar at all with Rasplex as I don’t use it – I have only breifly used it to set up this image. It could well be that the Aeon skin I used does not include the necessary link to the wifi settings, but it won’t have been deleted. I will re-install and try to investigate at some point, but in the meantime you could try switching skins back to the original skin temporarily and setting up your WiFi in the normal manner then switch straight back to Aeon. That should work fine and you shouldn’t lose the games menu I added (no guarantees – I have never tested this but there is no reason why it would remove my custom games menu).

Please let me know if this works.
Smithers thanks for your triple-boot image! It works very well:)

Just a question (on retropie side): I want to run some extra openbor games. The command (eg for ddx) is

cd /home/pi/bor/ddx

/opt/retropie/supplementary/runcommand/runcommand.sh 0 “/home/pi/bor/ddx/openbor.sh” “OpenBOR”

Inside home/pi/bor/ddx i can see 4 folders: Logs (null), Paks, Saves and Screenshots. Inside Pakes there is a mod folder and inside that a data folder, meaning /home/pi/bor/ddx/Paks/mod/data. But in there i can see 7 other folders (e.g bgs, chars, levels, music etc) and 4 other files.
The problem is that ALL of my openbor games are in *paks (i dont have these 7 folders and files, but only *.pak).

So, do i only have to place the pak inside the pak folder? Or smth else?

Thanks!
Hi.

The version of openbor that is available for the Pi doesn’t seem to like old ‘.pak’ files – I couldn’t get any to work, so instead I ‘unpakked’ them and placed the raw files straight onto the SD card like you see in the 2 games I include.

To do this you will need a pak extractor program. I can’t remember where I found this online so I have uploaded the version I used below:

https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BzXFP_d3CHStWkNyZTF5TjcxRk0/view?usp=sharing

Extract the rar file anywhere you want then all you need to do is drag and drop your pak file (one at a time) onto the ‘paxplode.exe’ file (not the paxplode.bat file), and it will unpak the mod for you. You can certainly try to pak it up again if you like, the tool is included, however I didnt bother.

Its important to only unpak one at a time as the mods have the same directory structure, so when one is finished unpakking then move the /data/ folder out and only then start with a new mod.

Good luck!
ok, sooo finally after a week of usage I found something that isnt working.. My controller (ps3 like controller) works great in every console, but not in the super nintendo. I cannot play super mario… :(
Is it only Super Mario that isn’t working? And to be exact, is it ‘Super Mario All-Stars’ that you’re trying to play? If so then it is the rom at fault – it doesn’t seem to work well with most emulators in that the controls will only work in the menu and not in the actual game. To fix it you need to change the emulator for that specific rom from the default SNES emulator to a different one (can’t remember which one but it was definitely one of the ‘lr’ emulators). Then it will work.

Hi.

Ok I have finished making a new OSMC / RetroPie Dual-boot installer and here is the link:

[link removed]

RetroPie is v3 and has my normal tweaks. No other changes to RetroPie other than enabling the OSMC script and disabling the KODI script.

OSMC – I have tweaked my scripts to make them a bit more professional looking (compared to the last OSMC attempt), and have also installed and set up the Aeon Nox skin. I have left the OSMC skin applied as default, but you have the option of using Aeon if you like. Unfortunately the standard ‘Confluence’ skin does not allow custom scripts to be ran natively so I cannot add in my script to that skin.

I have allocated 1.8GB to OSMC and the rest to RetroPie. This should allow sufficient space for anything including the Beast Build in OSMC (if it works in OSMC?).

Hope this is what you were wanting – let me know if it works out ok for you.

Cheers.

**WiFi Issues Update**

OK then I bought a cheap wifi dongle from Amazon – link below:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00MXD2T5G

Inside it is a generic Ralink 148f:7601. Now Raspbian should supposedly natively support this, as I have the most up-to-date ‘Ralink’ firmware installed (according to apt-get install firmware-ralink), however it did not work at all. Neither my build nor the standard Raspbian install (direct from raspberrypi.org) could detect or set up this WiFi dongle.

I tried to install ‘WICD’ which is an alternative WiFi manager (with GUI) – no dice, it still could not find my dongle. I tried ‘WICD-CURSES’ which is the command line version of the same program – still no good, nothing found.

I done a Google search of ‘148f:7601’ and found others having the same problem with the Pi (and other Linux distros), and eventually found an updated firmware file on a Github page. I copied the file into the /lib/firmware/ directory inside Raspbian, rebooted then tried again. The standard Raspbian WiFi manager STILL couldnt see my WiFi adapter (on both my build and the standard build, using the ‘WPA_GUI’ utility), but when I tried WICD / WICD-CURSES – it works. It scanned and found a some SSIDS, I chose mine, entered the properties to update the password, tried to connect but it wouldn’t work. Found out I needed to change the DHCP Client to ‘dhclient’, tried it again and it worked, i.e. it has connected to my router and I am now able to browse the internet via WiFi. It also re-connects automatically on reboot.

So in conclusion – there is no problem with my build in regards to WiFi. It would instead seem as though Raspbian is in need of an update to include more / newer WiFi dongle firmwares. I can’t help you in the search of your own WiFi dongle drivers, however I can try and help with WICD:

You will need an ethernet cable plugged in before you continue!

To install WICD, open up a terminal (or SSH into the Pi), and type the following:

sudo apt-get install wicd

When it is finished installing, click on the start menu and go into the ‘Internet’ sub-menu. You should see ‘Wicd Network Manager’ – click on it and the network manager will appear. If your WiFi dongle is up and running already then it will scan and find any nearby SSID’s – click on your own, go to Properties and near the bottom of the page enter your WiFi password then go back and choose ‘Connect’. If it doesn’t connect first time then you may have to change your DHCP client from ‘Auto’ to a static value. To do this, click the drop-down menu button to the right of ‘Refresh’ at the top of the screen and then choose ‘Preferences’. Go into the ‘External Programs’ screen and choose a DHCP client from the list (there were only 2 options for me – I chose dhclient and it worked for me). Go back and try and connect again. It should hopefully work!

If you installed WICD and still couldn’t see any WiFi SSID’s then the chances are your driver / firmware is not installed for your dongle. To find out what driver you need, type in lsusb at the terminal. Here is my output:

pi@raspberrypi ~ $ lsusb
Bus 001 Device 002: ID 0424:9514 Standard Microsystems Corp.
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 001 Device 003: ID 0424:ec00 Standard Microsystems Corp.
Bus 001 Device 004: ID 148f:7601 Ralink Technology, Corp.
Bus 001 Device 005: ID 046d:c077 Logitech, Inc.
Bus 001 Device 006: ID 0c40:8000

I can see an entry for Ralink Technology Corp. which I know is a manufacturer of WiFi chips, so that is my WiFi dongle. If you have a number of different USB devices plugged in then you may want to unplug them temporarily so you can identify your WiFi dongle easier. So I noted down the number next to my WiFi dongle entry – 148f:7601 – and searched for it in Google (search term 148f:7601 Raspberry Pi) to see if a driver exists. I soon found one, installed it, and it worked. You should hopefully be able to do the same thing.

Well, I hope this helps – its all I can really offer on this problem I’m afraid as it is a problem that is inherited from stock Raspbian. If you have difficulties in locating an updated driver for your WiFi dongle then I would suggest making a post at raspberrypi.org – thats where I found a thread on my own dongle.

Good luck!
Hi Smithers, are you planning to update your OSMC+retropie build? I really prefer OSMC over OpenElec and your last build doesn’t have a stable retropie version. That would be awesome. Anyway congratulations for you good work!
I can do yes – you are the first to ask for it so I’m assuming most folk are happy with OpenELEC (as am I), but I can easy make a new OSMC image up should you want it.

Can I ask – did you try my OSMC build? If so, are there any changes you would recommend? I am not familiar with OSMC so I left it as-is in my build, but to me the menu system looked really basic – is this the attraction to OSMC or is there a standard set of customizations that folk generally apply to OSMC that I could pre-install?

Hope that makes sense!?

Cheers.

Hmmm… Im a little confused with this guide you have linked. It seems that he has made the process harder than it should be, although maybe that is due to the fact its designed to run off a USB stick instead of SD card. I really don’t understand how the OS switching occurs though? I have only skimmed through to be fair, but from what I gather the script to switch OS is triggered via SSH? That, to me, seems a little… odd, and un-intuitive. Maybe I have read it wrong, however I think that having a script to select in each OS that can be run natively on the Pi is a much more user friendly approach.

I intend to document my build process, in fact I have already started, but it will take a while til its finished. :/ To be fair its not a hard process that I follow, just very time consuming due to the fact I need to leave things in their ‘standard’ form all the time, so if I need to test then I need to go through the whole process every time from scratch – create the tarballs for each OS, copy to SD / USB, install, configure, test… takes a great deal of time! Especially when an error is found, small as it may be. Means that the process needs to be started over from scratch again. :/

P.s. its worth noting that when a card / USB stick gets to a certain size – 64gb and above – Windows will not allow formatting to fat32 so you have to revert to to a different program to force it to fat32 format. Even the ‘SD Formatting Tool’ will format to exfat on cards 64gb and above. There are plenty of free programs out there that will force format to fat32 so a quick Google search should get you what you need.

If using Linux then gparted works perfect for formatting to Fat32 on any size card you have.

Hi all.

There should be no problems with the install process for this build. Others have commented that it is working fine so the problem must be something at your end I’m afraid? Just to confirm – everything needs to be formatted strictly using Fat32, not exfat etc. I have tested this with a 16gb USB stick and 16gb and 32gb SD card and it works perfect for me. Maybe NOOBS doesn’t like large capacity USB sticks, but that is a total guess, and probably unlikely. All I can recommend is using a different method to format your USB stick as it is the stick that seems to be at fault if the OS choices are not showing. That or use a different USB stick altogether. I always use the same ‘USB’ build I compiled for NOOBS which works for my other dual boot builds so there is no reason why it won’t work for this too.

As for the WiFi issue – I have bought a WiFi dongle to test it myself. I’ll post if I find the problem but no timescales yet, just when I get the time to tinker with it.

Although everything works on the OpenElec (Kodi) side, I do have an annoying little “bug”.
When I click on a foldermap with the right-mouse button, normally it opens a properties-menu to edit, rename or add (depending on the folder selected), but now it just goes back one folder like “exit”,”backspace” or “Esc”. I’ve searched but I can’t find a setting where this can be changed.
This “bug” was and is not present on your dualboot 7.2 build.

Also the menu Music opens the Vevo addon instead of opening the standard menu to the music-library. This can be changed in the “System/Appearance/Skin” settings so not a big deal.
Yes this is likely my doing, due to my own keymap files. I should have removed them but obviously forgot! It easily fixed, all you need to do is remove ‘keyboard.xml’ and ‘mouse.xml’ from the following directory:

/storage/.kodi/userdata/keymaps/

Or of course you could edit the files to suit your own keyboard /mouse setup.

As for the music thing – this is how the standard Beast Build behaves and I didn’t amend it at all other than to add in my ‘Games’ section / scripts. As you say it is easily amended to whatever you want.
First off – thanks for creating the tripple boot image. Unfortunately, I can not get wifi configured. The dhcpcd GUI indicates wlan0 is not associated and doesn’t display available network SSIDs. I was also unable to get it to connect when I manually added my network information into wpa_supplicant.conf. I am using an EDIMAX ew-7811un adapter. Any help would be appreciated.
Hi.

This is very strange and I see a couple of people are having this same problem. I haven’t changed any standard functionality of Raspbian so I’m really not sure why WiFi won’t work in my build? Unfortunately I don’t have a WiFi dongle so I can’t test it either to find the root of the problem. If anyone else was able to test and find out then I will happily amend my image and re-upload.

Other than that, it may be worth investigating aa package called ‘wicd-curses’. This is a WiFi tool that can set you up however I’m not sure if it is compatible etc with Raspbian so you’d need to investigate first.

Please let me know how you get on.

Thanks – glad its working. Always a worry that it seems fine my end but completely doesn’t work for others! :s

I have just stumbled across Ubuntu Mate for the Pi and am thinking of doing a triple boot for that now. I like the OS alot more than Raspbian (only because I have an Ubuntu install on my laptop which I am now very familiar with).. hmmm.. If anyone shows an interest then I will give it a go, however Im not sure if it gives any advantage over Raspbian? Happy to hear others thoughts on this.

I’ve made no changes to RetroPie other than adding a Raspbian theme and script. I didn’t see the need to add another Golden Axe mod as standard (especially one that is not finished!).

OpenBOR mods can be added easily if you copy the directory structure I have put in place for the 2 existing mods in my build.

…..OK so I couldn’t have been more wrong. This triple boot build has been an absolute nightmare to package up and I have faced issues at every point along the way! Partition numbers changed, ‘sudo’ command was lost, os launching scripts wouldnt work, standard Raspbian partitioning script wouldn’t work, Cairo-Dock transparency issues… think of something that could have gone wrong and it did. >:(

Good news is that I have finally sorted all issues out and its ready to go. Here is a Google Drive link:

Thanks Smithers. Am i the only one that thinks that “Goldenaxe Curse of Death Adder” should be implemented in your “new” build? Is it possible? It is much much better than the classical golden axe !! (even better from the golden axe remake-openbor) :)

Looking forward to it!
Well its funny you should say that as it was actually me who made the ‘Goldenaxe – Curse of Death Adder’ mod! I released 3 demos of it but never could give enough time to finish it off so abandoned it, unfortunately. Somebody else picked up where I left off but they ruined it and it lost the feel and look that I was trying to achieve (they even removed the Conan the Barbarian theme music I put on!!). A few people have borrowed from it for their own goldenaxe mods too I noticed, which is cool. I still have my original ‘final demo’ version, should you want it, but I didn’t include it in my build as it was unfinished. It is the version that you see in my video.

Hi.

I’m afraid this can’t be done. If you look back through this thread it has been asked a few times. NOOBS handles all partitioning at first install so if you need to make changes it has to be done prior to installation.

I will make an instruction manual on doing this in time however if you look on the NOOBS website it should detail how to do it there already.

Yes I thought openbor was a great addition but it wasn’t very well received when I made a post about it haha! I assume its just one of these less heard of community driven game engines. Nevertheless I do already include it in my builds – look in the ports section and you will find Goldenaxe Remake and Double Dragon Extreme – these are both Openbor mods and are both very good. I didn’t want to overload with the bor mods so figured I would add 2 good ones and then at least the foundations are there for you to add more at your own will.
Very strange. The wadfile is running via lr-prboom which is a retroarch emulator therefore the controls should work just fine? Especially since you are seeing the yellow text, which would indicate your pad has been detected (I assume you have an Xbox pad!). I would suggest going into the retroarch GUI when in the game (normally via F1 key, or ‘hotkey+F1’) and setting up the controls manually, see if that works. If it does, then save a config file which you can then rename to retroarch.cfg and place in the lr-prboom folder for it to load when prboom is loaded. Should sort you out.

Hi.

Sorry for the lack of replies. Been busy with the triple boot. It has had my head absolutely done in trying to sort out transparency in Cairo-Dock using xcompmgr, but I have eventually figured it out and happy to say it is now running perfect on all systems!

I have calculated the minimum partition sizes for each OS too:

OpenELEC = 1.8GB – this awards enough space should you wish to install the ‘Beast Build’ (I have added the Spartan Wizard program so it is ready to install via 1 click, should you want to). I have also set up this build so you will be presented with the standard ‘Welcome Wizard’ within OpenELEC on first run, so you can set up some of your own preferences.

Raspbian = 6GB – this allows approx 1.5GB free space. Quite large but nothing I can do. I have installed the following to Raspbian:

Libre Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint… the full suite of MS equivalents)
VLC Media Player
Chromium
GIMP (image manipulation tool)
Cairo-Dock (my arch nemesis)
….maybe more that I have forgot too.

RetroPie = the rest of the space available on your card (minimum 2.8GB).

So by my calculations you should be able to install on a 16GB SD card and have approx 7GB storage space available to RetroPie (this is me estimating how much card space is lost due to boot partitions and NOOBS recovery files). Not too bad really, in theory, but this is of course assuming you take the ‘Install from USB stick’ method (massively recommended for all my builds, especially this monster!).

So now all I have to do is compress all partitions down so they are ready for the NOOBS installer but this will take an age given how big the files are in this build, so I’ll leave it over night to do its thing as its too late now (again!!). This means I won’t be able to test it until tomorrow night when I’m home from work, but I’ll definitely aim to release tomorrow night, all being well.

I’ll reply to questions above tomorrow.

All the best.

I’m afraid I don’t. You will need to either go through the motions in the Emulation Station ‘Joypad Setup’ script, or edit the es_input.cfg file manually. Please bare in mind that the es_input.cfg file requires keyboard characters to be entered in using their ‘key code’ (for want of a better term). What I mean is that it won’t accept for example ‘W’ ‘S’ ‘A’ ‘D’ as ‘up down left right’, you need to find the key code that corresponds to the ‘W A S D’ keys and enter them. Here is an example of my own es_input.cfg file but please don’t be tempted to copy this as it will not be what you need (I created it for a wireless air mouse / keyboard / remote combo):

<inputConfig type="keyboard" deviceName="Keyboard">
<input name="up" type="key" id="1073741906" value="1"/>
<input name="right" type="key" id="1073741903" value="1"/>
<input name="down" type="key" id="1073741905" value="1"/>
<input name="left" type="key" id="1073741904" value="1"/>
<input name="a" type="key" id="13" value="1"/>
<input name="b" type="key" id="1073741925" value="1"/>
<input name="start" type="key" id="1073741926" value="1"/>
</inputConfig>

Those long strings of numbers are key codes that were interpreted by Linux from my remote. Yours will be different no doubt.

Honestly – your best bet is to plug in the keyboard and set them up through the GUI. That way the settings should be carried through into Retroarch too for the libretro emulators, preventing you having to set those up manually too.

Good luck!
Thanks! What about your scripts and modifications when we update? Will they all get lost?
For RetroPie – definitely not. For OpenELEC – they shouldn’t, but I have never upgraded it before via a .tar file so I can’t say anything for definite. From what I gather, all addons and skin settings should be untouched when upgrading KODI.
hello!

Thank you very much for sharing this!

I would have 2 questions about this:

1) how big are the partitions for each system? can they be expanded?
2) how do you update one or the other system when updates are released?

Thanks!
Hi.

The partitions for beast build are around 1.4gb for KODI and the rest is allocated to RetroPie. For my normal KODI build, KODI is allocated around 1GB.

As for updates – both systems work in the normal manner. RetroPie is via the RetroPie Setup Script and KODI is through the GUI for none ‘milestone’ updates and via a .tar file for major updates (as far as I understand it). Either way, they should both work in their normal manner, the fact they are dual booted should make no difference.

This beast-build works just great!!
Most Add-Ons in this build just work “out of the box”, only a little tweaking on some local settings like Timezone or subtitles, but nothing special.

On the Retropie side, I’ve made a NFS mount to the NAS I own. Edited het fstab and crontab files in /etc and all the roms on the NAS are loaded on startup. Now I have almost endless space for the roms and it loads just like if it is on the Pi (or SD) itself. Even both controllers (Logitech Rumblepad and a PS3) are working the first time booting. Not even a single error.
Even my daughter (9 yrs) is playing these old games now. :)

If I find any errors or hiccups (which I doubt) I’ll let you know.

Thanks again for the GREAT work!
Excellent, I’m glad its working out for you. Good idea to use the nas drive. I have one myself so I should really use it for something other than SD card backups! Its sitting with about 2.4TB free right now, clearly wasted haha!

I can’t wait til my son is old enough to appreciate the retro games. He’s only 20months old so all he wants to do is bash the controllers around the house. :/

Who needs an Xbox or ps4 when you have RetroPie though eh? :)

Hmm… Hard for me to say without seeing your scripts and autoboot files. Can you post the contents of the files please and I will try and help.
Smithers,

You once again provide good products! I had my doubts of what the Aeon Skin would look like on the plex build since the XBMCplex addon is kinda garbage, but this is really clean looking. You really must stop coming out with all these different builds b/c its takes me to long to setup my retropie each time.

Any plans on a Retropie/Rasplex/Openelec build?
I might tinker with what you have released now. to add in the third booti just need to find the boot partion number for each after it gets installed through noobs and make the scripts?
Yeah I think it looks fine. I too had my doubts when I was building it because of my lack of knowledge of Plex. When I set it up and was presented with a black screen with 4 options I thought… hmmm.. this is not good! I persevered and registered for a Plex account and as it transpires the thing comes alive once you set it all up and looks good!

I have heard a few people calling for a Triple-Boot with Plex and KODI alongside RetroPie and it should be pretty straightforward. You are right in that all you need to know is the partition numbers really, but you will only know these once you have set it up ‘blind’ for the first time. Then you can create a new ‘autoboot.txt’ (or amend existing) for each partition, create a new script for each partition (by copying my existing scripts), assign the script to a menu item in Plex / KODI and away you go! I will create a triple-boot myself though too, just as soon as I am finished with the Raspbian triple boot.

I have setup my Emulation Station theme to cater for Rasplex, KODI, OSMC & Rasbian so I will upload it into the ‘Themes’ section on this site for those who like to tinker with these OS’s.

Awesome, you also said something about a triple boot with Retropie, Raspbian, and openelec, is that going to be like that miniemu kickstarter a couple months back?

Except smithers isn’t a greedy dirtbag that prostitutes the work of others for his own financial gain and smithers actually knows what he’s doing.

Good work smithers. You’re a stand up chap.

Thanks Herbfargus. :) I believe in sharing with the community and not withholding information which I think can only lead to bigger and better things for everyone, myself included. Already there are folks commenting on how they are modding their own builds now off their own back, which means they are taking the time to learn Linux and the Pi in general, which in fairness is the Pi’s goal – a learning tool. :)

I take it ‘Kickstarter guy’ wasn’t very popular around these parts then? I can certainly understand why. I think its fair enough to offer something for sale if it is something special and all your own doing, but if all you are doing is building upon the (vast) foundations of others hard work and putting your badge on then its just not cricket.

Hmmm, I didn’t see any mention of Raspbian in that video? But yea, I am working on a triple boot build and will release it soon as I have ironed out a few kinks. No Kickstarter will be involved or anything like that, just a link to download and install.

Hi.

Sorry, I wasn’t subscribed to this thread so didn’t see your replies! :s

Here is a link to the Zdoom binary I compiled, along with a few wads (the ones I include in my build), and their respective launchers:

https://mega.nz/#!cMRh2JbJ!7Tm7RT_27i0iFW5oTR9qJXP9R1p2LjOq6YpuvsyWrWw

All you need to do is extract and copy into your /home/pi/RetroPie/roms/ports/ folder, add in your own doom1 / doom2 wad files into the /zdoom/ folder and select one of the games in Emulation Station. The wadfiles ‘doom.wad’ and ‘doom2.wad’ must be named lowercase for my scripts to work.

*Please note that you may need to install some dependancies before Zdoom will play – visit the GitHub page below and read the readme file for further info:

https://github.com/sneakernets/zdoom

I haven’t tried Hexen / Heretic / Strife however there is no reason why they shouldn’t work. I use Chocolate Doom for those ports in my builds (just to add extra variations to the ports menu).

All the best.

As for the Raspbian seems that most just wants the
1) file manager/usb access
2) Media Player to play videos etc eg. vlc player
3) Web Browser eg. IceWeasel/Epiphany browser/Chromium/ which ever is best
4) LibreOffice – it is also made to be use in raspbian. Don’t know of any alternatives but .

The size seems up to 3GB – 4GB to accommodate the software since it seems it will pick up a little space.
And my pick of the kodi build will be the beast but I can possibly install it myself.
You’re right – the size I am looking at now is around 4.5GB, that is with only the aforementioned applications installed! :o

I’m not going to write this off, but allocating 5GB+ just for Raspbian means alot less space for everything else, we’re talking that a 32GB card would be the recommended size for this build I think.

I forgot to mention but I did take your advice on RaspEX and it looks good – I have downloaded it but not had a chance to try it out yet. Do you know if it is a more lightweight distro than Raspbian?

Also, as for the beast build – I can add the repository in so it is ready to install, should you want it. It is just a simple click of a button really, so technically I can offer both options in one build. Makes life a bit easier I think!

All the best,
Steve
