Did you setup your controller using the “Register RetroArch Controller” option, which is somewhere in RetroPie-Setup. Look at step 3 in the following article:

I had similar issues with controllers.

First install jstest-gtk at the command line using the following:

sudo apt-get install jstest-gtk

After it is installed use the following command to determine your joystick mappings:
jstest /dev/input/js0

During the test if you push a button on your controller, you will see the state change from off to on and which button number it is assigned. Check each button against the value in retroarch.cfg.

Thanks that did it! Although my xbox controller buttons were slighty different.

I tried it and still no response in games.

It works in emulation station but no games.
