    At the end of the day, this issue is now solved !
    The root cause is an issue with some arts (background pictures) contained in EmulationStation Menu.

    To solve it :
    1. Rename:
    /etc/emulationstation/themes/simple
    TO
    /etc/emulationstation/themes/simpleOLD
    2. Download the file: es_theme_simple_v1.4 (9.9mb today)
    available here: blog.nilsbyte.de/download/emulationstation-theme-simple-v1-4
    3. Extract the folder: simple
    4. Copy the folder: simple in /etc/emulationstation/themes/
    5. Reboot

    Thanks to Wagner Tick Biagioni Libardi.

    To help you about the FBA roms : parents / hardware (CPS1-CPS2-NEOGEO), I join the FBA-gamelist.txt

    Enjoy !

    Hi Trumad,
    yes for sure, I advise you to apply/check permissions after pasting a rom file.
    You can do it easily with an FTP client like FileZila.

    Hi,
    it is what I suppose.
    In fact in the config file, there is no indication how to do that.
    I hoped, I was wrong and there wasa solution… but… no… :(

    For my part, I have tested the 3 following solutions, here is my personal feedback :

    1. Scraper included in EmulationStation
    – Scraper freezes or blockes EmulationStation
    – Medium ration of detection (roms found in the database)
    + When rom is detected, good information provided (#of players, description…)
    + XML creation in automatic way (nothing to do)

    2. Scraper in commandline
    Video by Floob : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bg20m5pPjns
    – Medium ratio of roms detected
    – It needs sometimes to run several times the command line to increase the number of found pictures
    – Could take several hours for a result
    – In some cases, delay (4-10secondes) could appear between “the roms is closing” & “come back to EmulationStation” or “when EmulationStation is closing” and “time to come back to the prompt”.
    + not so complex to use – good video tuto :) !

    3. Scraper with Emumovies
    Video by Floob : https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=ijag-o-bHy4
    – No information about game (description, number of players…)
    – Not all emulators are taken into account (just a few of them including Mame, FBA, Neogeo, a few Nintendo, and a few Sega ones…)
    + easy to use (scan of the rom folder from windows session)
    + easy to execute the command line to generate the gamelist.xml file (refer to the readme.txt/html)
    + good video tuto (Thanks to Floob!)
    + very good ration of roms detected (pictures found)

    For my part, I prefer the solution#3.
    I have used it for : Mame, FBA, NEOGEO (with FBA), SNES and Sega Genesis, even if at the end, only pictures are available (no description and no player info).
    But of course, it’s only my feeling regarding my configuration and usage.

    Thanks for your help.

    In conclusion :

    1.
    To change the MAME input configuration:
    Start Mame in text mode with typing: ./mame
    Lauch a game (rom)
    Press ‘Tab’ to enter inside the GUI menu and choose ‘Input (general)’
    Change input configuration (keys, joypad…)

    2.
    To backup and restore Mame input configuration :
    -> backup and restore the file : /opt/retropie/emulators/mame4all-pi/cfg/default.cfg
    This file is NOT editable.

    3.
    Other MAME configuration is stored in: /opt/retropie/emulators/mame4all-pi/mame.cfg

    Aftert investigations and external help, the issue is solved.

    I have removed some systems by renaming the rom folders (ie : roms\nes -> roms\xnes).
    In that case the number of systems to be managed by EmulationStations is decreased to 4 or 5 only, and in this situation , IT WORKS !

    Cause unknown : lake of memory ? lack of power ?….

    Hi,
    I was in the same situation.
    But finally I have found the right neogeo.zip file, because at the end of the day, several versions exist.
    In addition to that, I have followed the (very good) video from Floob and copy the neogeo.zip file in the 3 locations :
    • /opt/retropie/emulators/pifba
    • my default bios folder
    • inside the neogeo roms folder (where the roms are located)

    To define a default bios folder, I have changed in /opt/retropie/configs/all/retroarch.cfg, the parameter: System_directory
    System_directory = /home/pi/RetroPie/roms/BIOS
    Now the BIOS folder store all bios files for all emulators.

    In addition to that, you have to find the right version of the NEOGEO roms. Some games don’t work even if the version seems to be the right one.

    About the segmentation error, just a few of the roms have got it, but anyway, it works.

    Hi Shiftyowen,
    for my part, I am a rookie in linux usage. I come from the “DOS & Windows’s world”.
    Like you, I met issue regarding permissions.
    So I have got my own solutions :
    1. I use the graphic mode to copy roms (from USB stick to roms folder), with the following command:
    sudo startx

    2. to realign permissions to roms folder or other ones, I use FILEZILA and the ‘right clic’ on folder, select ‘permission’ and apply ‘777’ to all sub-folders and files.

    Theorically, it isn’t 100% secured, but for my part, I am not afraid to be hacked… So the risk is limited :)

    Hi
    about /opt/retropie/emulators/mame4all-pi/mame.cfg it doesn’t reflect the reality.
    In this file only P1 is configured in [frontend] Section, but in fact I have configured lot of other keys in the graphic mode (with TAB to call the menu).
    And we can read in this file, lot of Key-fonctions are missing : only Button A is defined and nothing more about the others.

    I will test to change the configuration with the graphic menu and backup/restore the default.cfg in /opt/retropie/emulators/mame4all-pi/cfg

    Hi Downup,
    My previous config was :
    arm_freq=900
    core_freq=250
    sdram_freq=450
    over_voltage=2
    -> The sound was slow.

    Now I use :
    arm_freq=1050
    gpu_mem=384
    avoid_safe_mode=1
    overscan=1
    core_freq=500
    sdram_freq=550
    over_voltage=6
    and it seems to be better regarding the sound (but may be not perfect). I test with Mortal Kombat II.

    I have followed information about overclocking from here :
    https://github.com/retropie/RetroPie-Setup/wiki/Advanced-Configuration
    Of course I have got heatsinks but no fan.
    I have not yet tested the provided script from the link to check the temperature… I will do it.

    Hi Floob,
    about ISSUE#1 and continuing my investigation, I have tried another bios file.
    I found one

    I took the file : FB_Alpha_v0.2.97.29_neogeo_BIOS.zip

    As usually I put the file on the 3 locations and now it WORKS (finally!).
    It works not for 100% of the neogeo roms but only half.
    So my issue comes from bios version.

    I consider my issue is solved.
    Thanks again.

    Hi Floob,
    After investigation, there are 2 issues :

    ISSUE#1 : NEOGEO roms failed with FBA emulator
    I can’t start a NEOGEO rom.
    Yesterday I have followed your good video.
    I have added the neogeo.zip file in those 3 locations :
    • /opt/retropie/emulators/pifba
    • my default folder where all bios files are stored
    • roms/fba
    Unfortunately, it doesn’t work.

    For information, when I wrote : 1944 works, in fact I realise that 1944 is a pure FBA game (and not neogeo one). Sorry for the confusion.

    So for my part, no neogeo game works.
    In your video, I can see that you use roms version FBA 0.2.97.08 by lovok.
    I didn’t find those files and I use may be another version of the roms. The issue could come from this difference… but I am not sure, else lot of people should meet this issue.

    Concerning the neogeo.zip, it seems to be the same (1.316Mb from Windows explorer).

    Does the issue come from rom version ? bios version ? other(s) ?
    Could you advise something ?

    ISSUE#2 : FBA roms with segmentation fault error
    Now the FBA roms work.
    I use CPS1 & CPS2 roms and they work. They are pure ‘FBA roms’ for FBA emulator.
    I continue having the message on 90% when a rom is starting :
    line xxxx : #code# segmentation error
    but it WORKS well.
    (if someone has got the solution…)
    Thx for your help.

    Hi
    about the bios, I have changed in the file :
    /opt/retropie/configs/all/retroarch.cfg
    the following parameter : System_directory
    System_directory = /home/pi/RetroPie/roms/BIOS
    With this parameter, all bios files are stored in this specific folder, for ALL emulators.

    The bios files for PSX are :
    SCPH1000.bin
    SCPH1001.bin
    SCPH7003.bin

    Now when you start a PSX game, the message ‘bios not found – bugs excepted…’ is removed.
