lr-genesis-plus-gx forcing aspect ratio

I recently upgraded to Retropie 3.3 and I always edit my retroarch.cfg to enable fullscreen and not to force aspect ratio so the emulators will fill the entire screen (16:9 in my case instead of 4:3). This has always worked in past versions, but now it seems that lr-genesis-plus-gx (my Megadrive emulator of choice) is not applying these settings, when every other emulator is. It is forcing an aspect ratio of 4:3 no matter what I tell it to do in the config. Never had this problem with previous versions. Any thoughts?

Do you manage to modify the aspect ratio directly in game with the retroarch menu?
If so, select the right aspect ratio from here, save a config file and take a look at it to see what it looks like.
