    you’ve to do with root permissions…you’ve to go on terminal (press f4) and

    
    sudo -i
    cd /opt/retropie/emulators/mame4all  (mame4all folder i don't remember specifically folder)
    ./mame
    

    now you choose a game and inside game press tab on keyboard and you’ve to configure buttons

    i’m using ps2 controller with an usb adapter…i’ve try to remove es_input.cfg but i’ve same problem when i exit from an emulator…
    i press select+start to exit from game by my controller and i’ve this output :

    maybe it’s because when i exit from a game, i’ve Segmentation fault on game’s rom ?

    from terminal

    
    sudo nano /opt/retropie/configs/all/retroarch.cfg
    

    after you have modify, for save press Ctrl+O (O not zero :D ) and press Enter, to exit from editor press Ctrl+X

    you have to do

    
    cd /opt/retropie/emulators/RetroArch/installdir/bin
    ./retroarch-joyconfig >> /opt/retropie/configs/all/retroarch.cfg
    

    after you’ve set your controller…

    i’ve use ./retroarch-joyconfig without option -j and it works…sincerely i don’t know what -j option do
