Xbox 360 wireless controller only works as player2?

I have this problem with my xbox 360 wireless controller
it detects fine and i can use it on emulation station but…when i do a jstest it shows the output as jstest0

although when i try and config it for retroarch controller it wont do any: Configuring binds for player #1 on joypad #0
only works with: Configuring binds for player #2 on joypad #1…
I think i might be missing something here?

Can anyone help – i have over used google today as it is :(
