    I’ve been having enough trouble with the analog audio output (with crackling and popping sound, weird whining noises, and occasionally no sound at all) that I’m thinking about adding a USB audio output device to my setup. Has anybody tried a USB audio device with RetroPie? Is there any chance that audio performance might be better with a USB audio device than with the built in analog audio output?

    There is an approved list of compatible USB sound cards at http://elinux.org/RPi_VerifiedPeripherals#USB_Sound_Cards.
    If you get such a card, it would be great to hear about the sound quality here :-)
