RetroPie GPIO Adapter Wierd Behavior

Hello. When I insert a controller while the pi is powered ON the GPIO sends all sort of buttons randomly (Start, X, A, etc. It ususally exits current game Start-Select cmd first) until its properly inserted.. I use a modded SNES case. See picture. Once inserted it works good!

any ideas what happens? Short circuits? remaining power in controller that unleashes when I insert it?
