I am as inexperienced with all this as one can be so i would appreciate any help. I setup my pi with the latest Raspbian and followed the installation guide posted here:https://github.com/retropie/RetroPie-Setup/wiki/First-Installation except I used the sources instead of the binaries. When it rebooted and emulationstation started up I setup my keyboard to navigate. Once i was able to choose the emulator i was only given the apple, PC(x86), duke3d, prboom, and cave story to choose from. did something go wrong or is there a different way to get to the other emulators?

You need to put some roms (e.g. a SNES Rom) into the right folder (SNES roms into SNES folder) then you will see the emulator for the SNES. It will work for alle the emulators the same way.
