I tried to install a theme for emulationstation

    to be precise, this one:
    http://blog.nilsbyte.de/emulationstation-v2-emulator-frontend/

i connected via sftp (filezilla) to my pi with pi/raspberry but can’t seem to create/write anything in etc/emulationstation. it only says permission denied.

i tried setting up a root password with ‘sudo passwd root’ but i didn’t let me enter anything? …

I’m really new to this. any help would be appreciated, thanks!

ok, via filezilla get to /home/pi/.emulationstation in that folder create a folder named themes and drop your theme you want to add in that folder you just made.
now via the emulation station menu it should be now selectable
