how to controller config with Retropie 2.X

hi im new to raspberry pi and retro pie,im to config my controller by conmand line

sudo chown pi /opt/retropie/configs/all/retroarch.cfg
cd /opt/retropie/emulators/RetroArch/installdir/bin
sudo ./retroarch-joyconfig -j 1 >> /opt/retropie/configs/all/retroarch.cfg

but it wont open,
I swapped -j1 to an -j0 in the last commard line and went though its thing, but the controller wont work for all systems, and i cant get out of the game without useing my keyboard, how do i fix this??
