emulationstation – cannot configure keyboard on first run

I just installed RetroPie yesterday. Upon my first run of emulationstation from the console, I get a screen asking me to configure my keyboard (Up, Down, Left, Right … etc.) At the end of this process there is an OK button I cannot seem to navigate past. That button doesn’t seem to recognize any keyclicks and my mouse and trackball do not appear to visible on the screen to click either. The only way past seems to be to exit back to the console by F4. Next time I run emulationstation, I am right back at the keyboard configuration screen again and cannot move past.

Any ideas for troubleshooting?

whatever you configure as “A” when going through the steps – use that to “click” OK while it is highlighted
