controller number lights on xbox pad

Hi
i’m using rpi2 2.6 image file
my xbox pads work fine but I can’t get the numbers to light up
I have gone through the “setting up xbox360 pad tutorial” inc step 3
and nothing!
this isn’t my first retropie setup and my old one was easy to do but this one is just plain being awkward
