cant separate player 1 and player 2 when doing esconfig

Hi all, I apologise in advance for being a noob and only being able to deal with this in simple terms.

Basically the problem is that I have two joysticks and two sets of buttons wired into the I-pac2. when i try to configure the controls in esconfig, I press a button on control 1, then when it comes to control 2 it still thinks the buttons belong to controller 1. Anyone know how I fix this?
