Any advice for setting up multiple controllers in general and on snes?

I tried adding input indexes and various sorts of other things. Can I just ask that others who have been sucesssful with adding multiple controllers walk me through the process of doing it so I can check where and if I went wrong somewhere?

Can I additionally add, if it is at all possible I would like to know how to set up snes controls successfully on an xbox and ps3 controller once I set the above correctly. ^
