ParticipantBelow are a series of images of the video_smooth option on or off. Currently, ‘on’ is the default, but which you do you prefer? NOTE: either way, you can change this setting in your options :)

MemberI think it depends on the system you’re using but especially for most of the older systems my vote is for
OFF

ParticipantLike Herbfargus said, it depends on the system and what resolution you’re running the games at. If you’re running at 1080p, then OFF is best, most of the time. If you are forced to run a game at 640×480 or even lower, it’s sometimes better to use ON so that you don’t get different DPI pixels.

ParticipantI always set smoothing to:
OFF

ParticipantSmooth OFF, it always makes the game look blurry instead of clear.

KeymasterON (I wasn’t going to vote – but since herb did :-) )
It actually depends on which monitor I use – one of my monitors looks good with it on, another is too blurry.

MemberI like both…
OFF – to make it more clear to users that the view is unaltered. That then (I think) makes the process of changing video settings more clear. Otherwise you tend to get posts saying “Why does the video look all blurry”. That said, having smooth as on can often be enough to give that CRT look for many people.
ON – I like this setting in combination with scanline overlays, as I feel it gives the best representation of how I remember CRT gaming.
Horses for courses I guess.

ParticipantI agree that it is depending on the game. If you’re playing something with decent graphics like N64 or GC, i’d probably use smooth. Anything that takes it’s charm from being pixelated though, definitely off. For what I mainly do on my Pi, I’d prefer off. But then again, I don’t know how to turn it on or off…

ParticipantI like Off better, more of an original feel to me.

ParticipantOff, I like nice clear vibrant pixels.

I remember when I first discovered turning filtering or smoothing off in an emulator. Say goodbye to fuzz. Say hello to pixels. :)

ParticipantOFF. As the others said, I think turning video_smooth ON makes the game look too blurry on my monitor.
