It certainly seems like it should work with dpad-as-axis (the default setting) as well. The only reason I set my controller up with dpad-as-button in the first place, is because I made an arcade controller out of an xbox 360 controller which uses the dpad for the stick that I wanted to use with MAME/FBA. Anyway, it sounds like you’re on the right track to fix it.
