XBOX 360 Controller works in ES but not in NES emulator

I didnt have any issue with RetroPie detecting my XBOX 360 wired controller. When I’m in the ES the controller works fine. When I actually select a title to emulate the game does not recognize any XBOX 360 controller input. I am using RetroPie v2.3. When I follow the wiki for setting up the xboxdrv it says no controller found.

Did I skip some vital step to get the emulator to “see” the controller?
