Updating/Changing Emulators with sdcard image

I see a lot of people calking about updating or changing emulators by running the retropi-setup script. However, I created my setup with the sdcard image download – are these instructions still applicable or should I start my setup all over with a fresh raspbian install and compile everything from scratch? I really don’t want to do that – but I’m wondering if another snes player would work better than the default.
