I like that idea! Also, it does not seem to be that difficult (see, e.g., http://stackoverflow.com/questions/13736385/how-to-write-a-shell-script-that-checks-if-git-repository-is-up-to-date). The function at https://github.com/retropie/RetroPie-Setup/blob/master/scriptmodules/helpers.shinc#L157 would have to be modified as well as the installation functions of the individual emulators.
