I run a self-build bartop arcade without a hub.
This is plugged in my pi2:
-Wlan Stick
-USB Joystick (Xin Mo Controller)
-Wireless Keyboard
-VGA-HMI Adapter Usb Power Cable.
In my opinion a hub is not necessary.
