In your ROMs folder there are two types of save files- .SRM and .state. I think the SRM file is the in game save and the .state file is the save state (I could be wrong though) just copy those files and place them back in your ROMs folder in the new image. You can also do a full back up of your whole SD card using win32diskimager.
