You could connect a keyboard and try entering the command
$ emulationstation
If that works then it just isn’t booting to ES and you could fix it by doing:
$ sudo ~/RetroPie-Setup/retropie_setup.sh
Under Setup there is an option to Auto-Start EmulationStation
