Yes, I put the Mame roms in both directories;
/home/pi/RetroPie/roms/mame
/opt/retropie/emulators/mame4all-pi/roms

NOTE: I put them in the roms directory for opt path.

inside mame.cfg file;
rompath=/home/pi/RetroPie/roms/mame
samplepath=samples
